You can make a YouTube stream recover automatically only if the whole chain recovers: power, internet, computer or encoder, video source, and the YouTube broadcast itself. OBS auto-reconnect can help after a connection interruption while OBS is still running, but it cannot turn on a computer after a power cut or guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast is still active. For a local camera production, combine appropriate backup power with tested restart and reconnect settings. For prerecorded video, a cloud service can avoid depending on a powered-on home computer.
What has to recover after a power cut?
A working stream has several parts: electricity for the encoder and network equipment, an internet connection, a running and correctly configured encoder, an available camera or other source, and a YouTube broadcast that can still accept the encoder feed. A failure in any one of these can leave the public watch page offline even if another part appears to be working.
- Brief internet or ingest interruption: The computer remains on, so OBS may retry its connection.
- Mains power interruption: A UPS may bridge a short outage. Without one, the computer must be able to power on when AC returns and then start the source and encoder.
- YouTube broadcast ended: Reconnecting the encoder does not necessarily restore an event that YouTube has ended. Check the event state in Live Control Room.
- Prerecorded video: A cloud-hosted stream is a different setup from restoring an on-site live camera and production.
Prepare YouTube and OBS before an outage
1. Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
In YouTube Studio, create or select the intended live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
2. Check the broadcast’s start and stop behavior
Review the auto-start and auto-stop settings for the intended broadcast. These controls allow the encoder to start or stop the broadcast, but they do not power equipment or reboot an offline computer. If you reuse stream settings, check them again on the new stream because settings may be copied from the previous one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the relevant controls.

3. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Automatically Reconnect and enable the setting. This is community troubleshooting guidance for an output interruption, not a guarantee of recovery after a full power loss. It can retry when OBS is still running; it cannot boot a powered-off computer.
4. Plan for power and automatic startup
If the goal is to ride through a short outage, connect the computer and the network equipment needed to reach YouTube to a UPS. Estimate the combined electrical load and the runtime you need before selecting equipment; there is no defensible capacity recommendation without those figures. A UPS only helps while its available battery runtime can carry that load.

For outages longer than the UPS can bridge, check the documentation for your exact computer or motherboard for an option such as powering on after AC is restored. Names and availability vary by model. Test the complete sequence, including any required automatic login and startup applications, with your own security requirements in mind. Do not assume this setting exists or works on every system.
Test the full recovery chain
YouTube recommends choosing quality that fits the internet connection, checking upload speed, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. Its published H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are general recommendations, not India-specific guarantees. Test the chosen settings against your actual, sustained upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

- Test a planned computer reboot and verify that the source and encoder launch as intended.
- Test a network interruption while the computer remains on, and check whether OBS reconnects.
- If safe for your equipment, test a brief power interruption and confirm that the UPS or AC-restoration behavior does what you expect.
- Record whether YouTube resumes the same event or requires you to select or start another one.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room stream health and event status, then open the public watch page from a separate device or browser session.
An OBS indicator showing that it is streaming is not proof that viewers can watch the broadcast. Verify the viewer-facing page as part of every recovery test.
What to do when power returns
- Wait for the modem/router and internet connection to return.
- Confirm that the computer has booted and the camera or other source is available.
- Confirm OBS or the hardware encoder is running and sending to the correct stream URL and key.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health and event status.
- Open the public watch page separately. If the event ended or is not public, use the current Live Control Room controls to select, create, or start the appropriate event; do not rely on the encoder’s status alone.

Compare options by expected outage duration, whether the stream is live-camera or prerecorded, how much local production control you need, which devices must stay powered, and whether the YouTube event remains active. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 streaming option for prerecorded content; that does not establish suitability for live camera sources or guarantee availability. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
