How to Remux OBS Recordings to MP4 Without Re-encoding

Use OBS or FFmpeg to remux completed recordings into MP4 without another encoding pass—and understand the codec and recovery trade-offs.

To remux an OBS recording to MP4 without re-encoding, open File > Remux Recordings, choose the recording, and click Remux. OBS copies the encoded streams into an MP4 container; it does not re-encode them. Keep the original recording until you have checked that the MP4 plays correctly in your intended editor or player.

Remux a recording in OBS

  1. Stop the recording. Remux the completed file, not a recording that is still being written.
  2. In OBS, choose File > Remux Recordings.
  3. Use the file picker to select one or more recordings.
  4. Click Remux and wait for OBS’s completion prompt.
  5. Open the resulting MP4 in the application where you plan to use it. Check the picture, sound, duration, and any audio tracks you need before deleting or moving the original.

OBS documents this workflow in its Standard Recording Output Guide (2023-05-26). Menu wording can vary between OBS versions, so check your installed version if the path differs.

What remuxing does—and what it cannot do

A video file has a container, such as MKV or MP4, that holds encoded video, audio, and other streams. Remuxing changes the container while copying the selected encoded streams. With stream copy, there is no decoding and re-encoding of those streams, so this operation does not add a lossy re-encoding pass. FFmpeg describes stream copy as useful for changing a container or modifying container-level metadata in its documentation.

Remuxing does not convert codecs, repair a damaged recording, resize the picture, or make unsupported streams compatible with an editor. Whether an MP4 works depends on the codecs and streams inside it, as well as the software that opens it. If the destination application cannot decode a stream, copying it into MP4 will not solve that problem. You may need a different container or a separate transcoding step that re-encodes the media.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set OBS to remux automatically after recording

For future recordings, open Settings > Advanced and enable Automatically remux to mp4. OBS says it remuxes the video as soon as you stop recording. Confirm the label and availability in your installed OBS version, since settings can change.

Automatic remux changes the post-recording workflow, not the recording’s codecs. Choose codecs that your target editor supports; the original MKV remains useful as a recovery copy until you have checked the MP4.

Why record to MKV first

OBS recommends MKV for recording because an interrupted recording is less likely to lose the entire file. Traditional MP4 and MOV need finalization; if writing stops unexpectedly before finalization, the file may be unrecoverable. A practical routine is to record to MKV, stop cleanly, then remux to MP4 for software that prefers MP4. See OBS’s recording guide and Audio/Video Formats Guide (2023-03-26).

MP4 is not a guarantee of universal compatibility. OBS’s format guide lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video support for MP4, but compatibility also depends on the audio streams, container variant, and the application. Check the target software’s requirements rather than assuming every MKV recording will remux cleanly or play everywhere.

Use FFmpeg for batch jobs or explicit stream selection

FFmpeg is useful when you want a repeatable command-line workflow or need to specify which streams to keep. First inspect the input streams and decide which video, audio, subtitle, and other tracks belong in the output. The FFmpeg documentation gives this stream-copy example:

ffmpeg -i INPUT.mkv -map 0:1 -c copy OUTPUT.mp4

-map 0:1 selects the second stream in the first input; it is not a command to retain every track. -c copy copies the selected streams without decoding or encoding. For an attempt to map all input streams, a commonly used form is:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4

That all-stream command is not guaranteed to work: MP4 may not accommodate every stream type, and FFmpeg notes that stream copy can fail when required target-container information is missing or the streams are incompatible. Review the input streams and any output warnings, then test the result in the intended application. Do not use stream copy as a codec-conversion fix.

Choose the workflow that fits

Workflow Best for Selection and trade-offs
OBS manual remux A one-off recording or a small number of existing files Uses the OBS interface and avoids command-line setup. The output still depends on compatible streams.
OBS automatic remux Regular future recordings Remuxes after recording stops. The recording settings still determine the source container and codecs.
FFmpeg stream copy Batch work or explicit stream selection Scriptable and gives control over mapping; requires command-line familiarity and attention to stream compatibility.

If the remux fails or the MP4 does not work

  • OBS reports a remux problem: Check whether the source streams can be carried in MP4. Identify the video and audio codecs before choosing another container or transcoding.
  • The MP4 opens, but the editor has no sound or is missing tracks: Recheck which streams were selected. In FFmpeg, the -map 0:1 example includes only one input stream; map the tracks you actually need and confirm the output afterward.
  • The MP4 does not play in the target application: Check that application’s supported codecs and audio formats. Remuxing preserves the encoded streams, so it cannot make an unsupported codec playable.
  • The original recording was interrupted: An MKV is less vulnerable to losing the whole recording after an ungraceful stop than a traditional MP4/MOV, but remuxing is not a repair tool for a damaged source.

Consider Hybrid MP4 for a future OBS recording

OBS 30.2 introduced Hybrid MP4, which is written in fragmented form and finalized with a “soft-remux.” OBS describes it as aiming to combine recovery resilience with compatibility as a regular MP4 in compatible applications. Its format guide lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video for Hybrid MP4, while noting qualifications such as PCM compatibility. Availability and third-party support depend on your OBS version and target software; Hybrid MP4 is a recording-format option, not a way to remux an existing file. Or let it run in the cloud

Remuxing prepares completed recordings; it does not keep a YouTube channel live. If your goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
