For a long OBS recording that must survive an unexpected stop, record to MKV, then use OBS’s built-in remux tool to make an MP4 if you need one. If you already have an MP4, add it to your scene as a Media Source. These are separate tasks: remuxing changes the container without re-encoding, while a Media Source plays a file in an OBS scene.
Choose a recording format that can survive interruption
Ordinary MP4 needs finalization. If OBS or the computer stops before that process completes, the recording may be unrecoverable. OBS recommends MKV for most recording workflows because an unfinished recording remains playable and recoverable. The right choice depends on both interruption risk and what must open the finished file.
| Format | Interruption recovery | Compatibility and guidance |
|---|---|---|
| MKV | OBS describes unfinished recordings as playable and recoverable. | Supports every audio and video encoder combination available in OBS, but some editing software has weaker MKV support. Use it as the conservative choice for a long recording, then remux if MP4 is needed. |
| Ordinary MP4 | Requires finalization and may be unrecoverable if recording is interrupted. | Has broad editing support. Avoid it as the direct recording target when interruption resilience matters. |
| Hybrid MP4 | Writes fragmented data and performs a soft-remux when recording completes normally. | Designed to combine resilience with MP4 compatibility, but only supports specified audio/video codec combinations. Available since OBS 30.2; check the codec matrix for your OBS version. |
| Fragmented MP4/MOV | Written in self-contained chunks and does not require finalization to be usable. | Can work well in editing workflows, although some suites may need remuxing for lossless or uncompressed audio. |
Record in MKV, then create an MP4 in OBS
- Set the recording location and format. Open Settings → Output and choose the recording path—the folder where OBS saves recordings—and MKV as the format.
- Record the session. MKV is the safer target when an interrupted or unclean stop is possible.
- Remux after recording if an MP4 deliverable is required. Open File → Remux Recordings, select the recording, and run Remux.
- Optionally automate the conversion. In Advanced settings, enable Automatically remux to mp4 if you want OBS to remux when recording stops.
Remuxing changes the container; it does not re-encode the audio or video streams. OBS documents this workflow, but it does not promise that remuxing repairs damaged media or makes unsupported codecs compatible.
Consider Hybrid MP4 only after checking codec support
Hybrid MP4 is an alternative when you want direct MP4 output with more interruption resilience. OBS introduced it in version 30.2; it writes fragmented data and soft-remuxes on normal completion. Before selecting it, check that the audio and video codecs you use are supported by the Hybrid MP4 codec matrix for your OBS version. Hybrid MOV followed in OBS 32.0. These version details come from the OBS Project’s Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Play an existing MP4 in an OBS scene
- Add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the local MP4 file in the source properties.
- If the file type and GPU support it, you can check Use hardware decoding when available. Treat this as an option to test, not a guaranteed fix for stuttering or other playback problems.
OBS’s Media Source supports MP4. If the built-in source does not support a file format you need, OBS also provides VLC Video, which uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. The OBS Project documents these options in Media Sources.
Plan storage separately from file reliability
Long recordings can fill the drive selected as the recording path. Choosing a drive with enough available capacity, including an external SSD if that suits your setup, may address space constraints; it does not fix an unfinalized MP4, an unsupported codec, or a damaged file. The recording-path setting is covered in the OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide.

Troubleshoot by separating recording and playback problems
- The recording stopped unexpectedly and the MP4 will not open: ordinary MP4 may not have been finalized. For future long sessions, record to MKV and remux after completion.
- You need an MP4 from an MKV recording: use File → Remux Recordings. Remuxing is not a repair guarantee for damaged media or a codec-conversion tool.
- OBS will not play the selected file: check that it is loaded as a Media Source and that its format is supported. For formats needing VLC libraries, try VLC Video with the matching VLC and OBS architecture.
- Playback stutters: hardware decoding is an available setting only when the file type and GPU support it. OBS’s documentation does not establish it as a universal solution.
- The recording drive runs out of space: change the recording path to a location with adequate capacity. Extra storage does not address container finalization or codec compatibility.
The OBS Project’s recording guide, Audio/Video Formats Guide, Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats guide, and Media Sources guide cover the workflows and format behavior described above. The documentation does not establish a single fix for every cause of sync drift, corrupt indexes, storage-throughput issues, or very large-file playback problems.
