You may not need to convert your WebM files: OBS lists WebM and MP4 as supported video types. First try the files in the OBS playlist source you plan to use. Convert only when a file fails in your setup or another part of your workflow specifically requires MP4. If you do convert, use FFmpeg and test the result in OBS before relying on it live.
Check whether your OBS playlist can use WebM directly
OBS’s Media Sources guide lists both .webm and .mp4 as supported video types. That means the filename extension alone is not a reason to convert. It does not guarantee that every codec inside every WebM file will play on every operating system, OBS build, or streaming computer, so test representative files in your actual setup.
Use the VLC Video source for a playlist
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, the guide specifies 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will show the playlist.
- Add a representative WebM file to the source’s playlist and check that both picture and audio play correctly.
- Add the remaining files once the representative file works. Set the source’s loop and shuffle controls for the behavior you want. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default.
For a short playlist, play it through the scene from beginning to end and check transitions before going live. For a large collection, test a representative sample first, including any files made with different software or settings.
Choose the right conversion method
If a WebM file fails in OBS or another part of your workflow requires MP4, inspect the file’s video and audio streams before converting. The right method depends on whether those streams are compatible with the MP4 container and the software that will play the result.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Method | When to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the WebM | It plays correctly in the intended OBS playlist source. | Avoids conversion and duplicate files; it will not solve a compatibility problem elsewhere in the workflow. |
| Streamcopy | The source streams can be placed in MP4 and the intended player can decode them. | Fast and avoids re-encoding, but may fail when the streams are unsuitable for the container or player. |
| Transcode | The intended player cannot decode the original codec, or streamcopy is not suitable. | Requires encoding time and can reduce quality; codec and quality choices depend on the source and target. |
FFmpeg describes streamcopy as copying streams without decoding or encoding them. It is useful for changing a container, but it is not a universal fix for incompatible codecs. Transcoding decodes and encodes streams into a different format; it is the option to consider when the target cannot play the originals.
Convert a WebM file with FFmpeg
Install an FFmpeg build that includes the codecs you need, then run the command from a terminal or command prompt. The following general conversion pattern lets FFmpeg choose its default encoder for the output stream types; available encoders depend on your local build.

ffmpeg -i input.webm output.mp4
Replace input.webm and output.mp4 with the actual file paths. Use a new output filename so the original remains intact. This command is a starting pattern, not a promise of a particular codec, quality level, file size, or OBS compatibility.
Try streamcopy when the streams are suitable
ffmpeg -i input.webm -c copy output.mp4
This copies the streams instead of re-encoding them, so it avoids encoding loss and is generally fast when it succeeds. If FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be written to MP4, or the resulting file does not play in OBS, use a transcode instead. Renaming a WebM file to end in .mp4 is not conversion: the container and streams remain unchanged.

Transcode only as needed
When transcoding, choose video and audio codecs that your intended OBS/VLC setup can decode. FFmpeg’s output-file pattern can be adapted to specify encoders, but there is no single codec or quality setting established as best for every source and target. Encoding also takes computation and may reduce quality, so retain the original and avoid unnecessary repeated conversions.
Validate the MP4 in the actual OBS playlist
- Open the new file through the same VLC Video playlist source and scene you intend to use.
- Check that the full duration plays, the picture appears as expected, and audio is present and synchronized.
- Check the transition to the next playlist item, then test loop or shuffle behavior if enabled.
- Only replace or remove the source WebM after the MP4 has passed these checks in the streaming setup.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide describes MP4 as the de facto standard for internet video, but that does not make conversion necessary when your OBS playlist already plays WebM correctly. The practical choice is compatibility with the target, processing time, and whether preserving the original encoded quality matters.

Troubleshoot WebM and MP4 playlist playback
- VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC as specified by the OBS guide. Restart OBS after installation if the source still does not appear.
- WebM appears in the playlist but has no picture or sound: The extension does not establish that the codecs inside the file are supported in your local setup. Try the file in VLC independently, then test a converted copy in the OBS source.
- Streamcopy fails: The source streams may not be suitable for the MP4 container. Try a transcode with codecs supported by the target rather than changing the extension.
- The converted MP4 still fails in OBS: Confirm that FFmpeg completed successfully, then check the result in the same OBS/VLC versions and scene used for streaming. A different codec choice may be needed; MP4 is a container, not a guarantee that every stream inside it is decodable.
- Audio is missing or transitions behave unexpectedly: Check the converted file’s audio and duration, then test it within the playlist rather than only opening it separately.
OBS’s Media Sources guide is dated January 11, 2022; software support can change, and playback also depends on local builds and codecs. If a bulk conversion is planned, confirm the workflow with a small sample before processing the collection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than an OBS playlist on a local computer, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not camera input, and nothing at home has to stay on.
