To relay an existing HLS stream to YouTube Live, configure MediaMTX to pull the HLS playlist, then use FFmpeg or another compatible encoder to read the MediaMTX path and publish it to YouTube using the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. MediaMTX handles the incoming source and makes it available; the separate encoder makes the outgoing YouTube connection. The exact encoder command depends on the source codecs, timestamps, destination URL format, and whether transcoding is needed.
How the relay is arranged
The HLS input and YouTube output are separate stages:
HLS origin → MediaMTX path → local MediaMTX read URL → FFmpeg or another encoder → YouTube RTMP(S) URL and stream key
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy that can pull an HTTP(S) HLS playlist and expose the stream through a configured path. A client can then read that path over a supported protocol. Enabling MediaMTX HLS does not, by itself, configure a YouTube destination. See the MediaMTX project, its configuration reference, and its reading streams guide.

Configure MediaMTX to pull the HLS playlist
Add a path for the source
In the mediamtx.yml file used by your running MediaMTX instance, add a path whose source is the full HLS playlist URL. For example, the structure is:
paths:
documentary:
source: https://origin.example/path/playlist.m3u8
Replace the example URL with the actual playlist URL. This is a configuration pattern, not an end-to-end tested command: the origin must be reachable from the MediaMTX host, and any authentication or playlist requirements must be met. MediaMTX documents HLS as a supported source type in its configuration reference.

Check credentials and network access
- If the HLS URL requires credentials, follow MediaMTX’s documented URL format. Characters reserved by URLs may need percent-encoding; do not assume that credentials copied literally into the URL will parse correctly.
- Confirm that the host running MediaMTX can reach the playlist and the media segments it references. A playlist request succeeding does not guarantee the segment requests will also work.
- After updating the configuration, check the MediaMTX logs for source connection or parsing errors. Confirm that the configured path becomes available before proceeding to the encoder.
Read the MediaMTX path with an encoder
Use an encoder such as FFmpeg to connect to the MediaMTX path and publish to YouTube. The local read URL depends on the protocol enabled in your MediaMTX configuration. MediaMTX’s documented RTMP path pattern is rtmp://HOST:1935/PATH; with the example path above and a local server, that would be rtmp://127.0.0.1:1935/documentary. See the MediaMTX RTMP publish and read documentation for the applicable path formats.
There is no universally correct FFmpeg command for every HLS source. First identify the input’s video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, and timestamp behavior. Stream-copying may work when the incoming tracks and timestamps are compatible with YouTube’s accepted ingest settings; otherwise, transcode to compatible formats. Do not infer compatibility just because MediaMTX can read or route the source.

As a command outline only, an FFmpeg workflow has this shape: open the MediaMTX read URL, choose either stream copy or explicit encoding based on the inspected tracks, then output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with the stream key included in the required URL format. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the syntax supported by your installed build; verify the input and output options against that build and the actual stream before relying on it. No complete end-to-end command is established here.
Get and protect the YouTube ingest URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s destination settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder; the key is password-like information. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and manage live stream settings.
- Keep the key out of public screenshots, shared command examples, logs, and shell history where possible. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to the associated stream. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset workflow to replace it.
- Prefer the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it. RTMPS is the encrypted extension of RTMP recommended by YouTube; use the exact destination format shown in your Live Control Room rather than guessing the hostname or path.
Set encoder output for YouTube
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS where supported. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table before configuring a production relay, because platform guidance can change.

For H.264, selected rows in YouTube’s bitrate table accessed in 2026 list these recommended video bitrates: 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps; and 1080p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations for the specified codec, resolution, and frame-rate rows, not universal requirements or guarantees. Choose the matching row for the intended output and make sure the upstream connection can sustain the total video and audio bitrate with headroom.
- Resolution and frame rate: Use a target your source and encoder can deliver consistently. Avoid upscaling a lower-resolution source merely to match a higher setting.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval where the encoder permits it; never exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum.
- Rate control: Use CBR for the YouTube output as specified in its guidance.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and confirm that the source actually contains an audio track if audio is expected.
- Codec conversion: If the HLS source uses a format YouTube does not accept for this ingest, or its audio/video timing is unsuitable, transcode rather than assuming stream copy will work.
Test each stage before relying on the relay
- Verify the origin: Confirm the HLS playlist and referenced media segments are reachable from the MediaMTX host, and that playback is continuous.
- Verify the MediaMTX source path: Review its logs and confirm the path is ready without repeated source failures.
- Verify local reading: Connect a compatible client to the MediaMTX path and check that it receives the expected video and audio tracks.
- Verify encoding: Check the encoder output for decoding errors, timestamp problems, unexpected frame-rate changes, or audio issues.
- Verify YouTube receipt: Start the encoder and check that the feed appears in Live Control Room. Inspect the preview and stream health before making the event public or depending on the relay.
- Monitor during the event: Watch for source interruptions, encoder exits, network problems, and YouTube warnings. A successful initial connection does not establish that the source will remain continuous.
HLS source versus YouTube HLS ingest
In this workflow, HLS describes the incoming source format; RTMP or RTMPS is the outgoing YouTube ingest. YouTube also offers HLS ingest as a separate destination mode, but it uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than RTMP according to YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance. Its segment and upload constraints are distinct from the requirements for RTMP(S). Do not change the destination to YouTube HLS simply because the source playlist is HLS.

Troubleshoot by locating the failing stage
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| MediaMTX cannot open the source | Playlist URL, origin access, credentials, or host networking | Check the exact playlist URL from the MediaMTX host, verify access to referenced segments, and inspect MediaMTX logs for HTTP or parsing errors. Encode URL-sensitive credential characters as required by the source format. |
| The path exists but the reader receives no usable tracks | HLS playlist or media compatibility | Inspect the incoming video and audio tracks, playlist continuity, and timestamps. Confirm that the chosen MediaMTX read protocol and client can handle the stream. |
| FFmpeg connects but exits or reports decode errors | Input codecs, timestamps, or encoder options | Inspect the source streams and FFmpeg diagnostics. Try an explicit transcode if stream copy is incompatible, and confirm that options match the installed FFmpeg build. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming feed | Destination URL, stream key, transport, or outbound connectivity | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace or malformed URL formatting, prefer the provided RTMPS endpoint, and confirm the host can make the outbound connection. |
| YouTube receives video but reports poor stream health | Bitrate, keyframes, frame rate, audio, or network capacity | Match the output to YouTube’s current settings for the selected codec and resolution; use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and a bitrate the connection can sustain. |
| The relay works locally but fails after deployment | Runtime configuration and server networking | Confirm the deployed MediaMTX instance is using the edited configuration, that required ports are enabled and reachable, and that container port publishing, firewalls, or hosting rules are not blocking the source or reader connections. |
Configuration and operating considerations
The MediaMTX project documentation and rolling main-branch configuration were accessed on October 3, 2026. The cited defaults enable HLS on port 8888 and RTMP on port 1935, but defaults may differ from the version or configuration actually deployed. Docker port publishing, firewalls, hosting network rules, and overrides can also change what is reachable. Check the configuration running on your server rather than assuming those ports are open.
A relay is useful when you need to route or adapt an existing HLS feed before sending it to YouTube. It also introduces separate components to configure and monitor: the HLS origin, MediaMTX, the encoder, and the YouTube ingest connection. The official workflow does not require a particular hosting provider. If the relay must remain available while your own computer is off, run the components on an appropriately provisioned server or choose a managed cloud workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded documentary recording or playlist that should loop continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a different option from relaying a live HLS source: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
