You can use YouTube channel memberships around a 24/7 broadcast in two distinct ways: keep the video public and let only members chat, or make a separate live stream available only to members. The first adds participation without hiding the documentary stream; the second offers genuinely exclusive programming. Before promising a complete replay, plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a local recording if the archive matters.
Choose the membership experience you want to offer

These formats are not interchangeable. If the main value is an open, continuous documentary stream, members-only chat is the more direct fit. If the content itself is the benefit, create a members-only broadcast rather than restricting chat on the public one. YouTube’s current availability, policy, and eligibility requirements apply to memberships and perks; check your channel’s membership benefits guidance.
Set up memberships and perks in YouTube Studio
- Check availability. In YouTube Studio, open Earn → Memberships. If memberships are available for your channel, review the requirements and policy guidance shown there.
- Design perks you can deliver consistently. YouTube allows up to 6 membership levels, with 1 to 5 perks per level. Possible perks include badges, custom emoji, posts, members-first videos, members-only live chat, members-only streams, milestone chats, a recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. Perks are subject to YouTube’s policies and availability.
- Submit levels and perks for review. YouTube says review takes about a day. Treat this as an estimate, not a guaranteed launch time, and do not announce a perk as available until it is approved.
- Explain the offer plainly. State whether membership gives chat access to a public stream or access to a separate members-only broadcast. That distinction matters to viewers deciding whether to join.

Turn on members-only chat for a public stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream.
- Open the stream’s settings and find the Live chat options.
- Enable members-only chat, then save.
- Tell viewers that the video remains public but posting in chat is limited to members.
This keeps the documentary accessible to nonmembers while reserving live conversation for members. YouTube’s membership setup guidance covers members-only chat and other perks.

Create a members-only broadcast for exclusive programming
For a broadcast that only members can watch, create a live stream and set its visibility to Members only. Where available, you can also restrict it to selected membership levels. Nonmembers may encounter the thumbnail and metadata but cannot watch the stream. Confirm the audience setting before you begin, especially if you intended the documentary to remain public. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for live streaming to members only.
Make member interaction useful during a continuous broadcast
- Badges and emoji: Members can use membership badges and custom emoji in live chat, subject to the channel’s configured benefits.
- New-member welcome: When someone joins during a live stream, YouTube displays a new-member message in chat and pins that member’s profile image for five minutes.
- Milestone chats: Eligible members can send a milestone chat beginning with their second consecutive month. The highlighted message is visible to all viewers, including on a public stream.
- Gift memberships: On eligible live streams and Premieres, viewers may offer gift memberships. A viewer must opt in to be eligible to receive one. Gifted access lasts up to one month and is non-recurring; receiving a gift does not automatically start a paid recurring membership. See YouTube’s gift membership guidance.
For a documentary channel, make perks specific and sustainable—for example, a members-only discussion stream—rather than promising ongoing interaction that a continuous broadcast cannot reliably provide.

Plan the archive and rewind experience before going 24/7
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not promise that a single 24/7 broadcast will appear later as a complete replay. If preserving the footage matters, make a local recording and decide how you will store and manage it. Consult YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Rewind is a separate issue: YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers therefore may not be able to scrub back through the entire continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Dividing a continuous broadcast into shorter sessions may be worth considering if archives or rewind matter, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee that a particular restart schedule preserves continuity, membership access, or analytics. Verify the workflow on your own channel and keep a local archive if a complete copy is important.
Start the live stream with an encoder, if your workflow needs one
You do not need dedicated hardware simply to use channel memberships. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders; it describes professional-grade hardware as an option for higher-production events, not a prerequisite for getting started.

- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter them in your encoder, then start the feed from the encoder.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow and live streaming tips when choosing a setup. The encoder handles the video feed; channel membership settings determine who can chat or watch.
