The biggest CPU reduction often comes from avoiding an unnecessary video encode. First check whether FFmpeg is copying the video stream or encoding it; if it is encoding, confirm the active encoder and workload, then test faster software presets before considering hardware acceleration or a different EC2 instance. Measure CPU headroom, stream stability, quality and total cost on your own stream—there is no reliable universal CPU-saving percentage for this setup.
1. Find out what FFmpeg is doing
Start with the command line and FFmpeg’s startup log. A command using -c:v copy passes the video through without re-encoding; a command using an encoder such as libx264 performs video encoding and may be CPU-intensive. Audio can still be encoded separately, and filters or other processing may still use resources when video is copied.
Record the instance type, FFmpeg version and build, input resolution and frame rate, output settings, video encoder, preset, filters, and number of outputs. Measure CPU use during representative low-motion and high-motion segments. A GPU-capable instance alone does not prove FFmpeg is using its GPU: the chosen encoder, FFmpeg build and environment must support the hardware path.
FFmpeg documents its available codecs, options and hardware acceleration in its official documentation. Check the encoder list in the installed build with ffmpeg -encoders.

2. Reduce work in the software pipeline
Test a faster preset
If the video is being encoded in software, change one setting at a time and compare results. For libx264, try a faster preset such as veryfast; if needed, test ultrafast. Preset names and availability depend on the encoder. Faster encoding can reduce compression efficiency, so at a fixed bitrate it may produce lower visual quality. Keep the fastest setting that meets your quality and stability requirements.
For each test, record CPU use, whether FFmpeg stays ahead of real time, dropped or late frames, bitrate behavior and visual quality. Do not assume a particular preset will deliver a particular CPU reduction on a different stream or instance.

Remove conversions you do not need
Scaling, frame-rate conversion, filters, encoding multiple renditions, and choosing a more computationally demanding codec can add work. Check whether each operation is necessary for the intended YouTube stream. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live video into multiple formats for viewers, so a conventional YouTube workflow generally does not require you to create every viewer rendition locally. Avoid removing processing that is actually needed for your target output.
3. Check YouTube’s ingest requirements
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance for the output resolution, frame rate, encoding format and bitrate. Requirements and recommendations can change, so consult that page when configuring or revising a stream rather than relying on a hard-coded settings table.

Do not copy streaming settings blindly from an example written for another service. For instance, AWS’s IVS FFmpeg example illustrates an RTMPS streaming pattern with libx264, -preset veryfast, bitrate settings and AAC audio, but its endpoint and parameters are for IVS, not a statement of YouTube requirements.
4. Consider hardware encoding or another EC2 family
Benchmark a supported hardware encoder
If software tuning does not provide enough CPU headroom, test an encoder supported by both the EC2 instance and the installed FFmpeg environment. AWS describes NVIDIA NVENC/NVDEC on GPU-based EC2 instances and reports a benchmark in which tested g4dn configurations sustained up to four parallel 4K-to-five-output transcodes, while tested CPU configurations sustained at most one. That is a specific AWS multi-output benchmark, not a prediction for one YouTube feed or a CPU-reduction percentage. See the AWS benchmark for its workload and conditions.

Verify the encoder is present in ffmpeg -encoders, and check the instance’s hardware support, required runtime or drivers, pixel format and codec compatibility. Measure GPU utilization as well as CPU utilization: decoding, filtering or transferring frames may remain CPU-bound in a partly accelerated pipeline. Compare output quality and bitrate at the actual target settings because hardware and software encoders may behave differently.
Compare instance families against your stream
AWS reported 18–29% lower cost than C6i in its tested Graviton H.264/H.265 comparisons, which included live streams at three output sizes. The reported figure is not a guaranteed saving for a YouTube stream; the tested codecs, presets, instance generations and workload matter. Read the AWS Graviton FFmpeg comparison as benchmark evidence, not as a universal forecast.

AWS has also identified EC2 VT1, based on dedicated video-transcoding acceleration, for live streaming and transcoding. Its announcement describes dynamic GOP and on-the-fly quantization controls, but those details do not establish current regional capacity, pricing or compatibility for a particular YouTube setup. Verify the supported SDK or FFmpeg path and deployment constraints before treating VT1 as an option. See the AWS VT1 announcement.
Compare total cost per stable stream, not just a benchmark ranking or instance hourly rate. Account for region and current pricing, required headroom, resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, codec, number of outputs, target quality and the operational effort of maintaining the software and hardware path. AWS’s example hourly prices in its January 2024 comparison are historical, not current quotes; check current EC2 pricing for your region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Run a controlled before-and-after test
- Capture the baseline: save the FFmpeg command and startup log; record instance type, build, encoder, input and output formats, filters, CPU use, bitrate, frame stability and visual quality.
- Change one variable: test a faster preset or remove one unnecessary conversion. Do not change preset, codec, resolution and instance at the same time.
- Use representative content: include both low-motion and high-motion sections, since encoding load can vary with content.
- Check the live result: confirm FFmpeg sustains real time, the stream remains stable, and output quality and bitrate meet the target.
- Test a hardware or instance change separately: verify that acceleration is active, then compare end-to-end performance and cost for the same workload.
- Keep the change only if it works operationally: retain enough CPU headroom for the actual stream and its surrounding workload, not merely a successful short test.
6. Troubleshoot common CPU and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| CPU stays high even after selecting a GPU instance | FFmpeg may still be using a software encoder, or another pipeline stage may be CPU-bound. | Check the active encoder and startup log; verify hardware encoder availability and runtime setup. Inspect decode, filters and frame transfers as well as GPU utilization. |
| CPU falls, but the picture looks worse | A faster preset may be less compression-efficient at the same bitrate. | Compare the picture at the target bitrate and resolution. Choose a slower preset if needed, or reconsider the bitrate within YouTube’s current guidance. |
| FFmpeg cannot keep up with the requested frame rate | The encoder or pipeline may not sustain the target workload; filters, conversion or multiple outputs can contribute. | Measure representative content, simplify unneeded operations, test a faster preset, then benchmark compatible hardware or another instance. |
| Hardware encoder is missing or fails to initialize | The instance, FFmpeg build, codec, pixel format or environment may not support the selected path. | Confirm the encoder appears in ffmpeg -encoders; verify instance capability and required runtime or drivers, then check format compatibility. |
| Output settings copied from an online example do not work as expected | The example may target another streaming service or an older configuration. | Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for ingest requirements; treat service-specific examples as syntax illustrations only. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating FFmpeg on EC2: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It sends the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
