Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can send a Docker-based encoder running on an Amazon EC2 Linux instance to YouTube Live by installing Docker on the host, creating a stream in YouTube Studio, and giving your chosen encoder that stream’s server URL and key. The AWS documentation provides a Docker installation path for Amazon Linux 2023; it does not prescribe an encoder image, EC2 size, or container command, so those must match your own encoding workload.
Before you start: YouTube eligibility and stream setup
Check channel eligibility before building the EC2 setup. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and the minimum age for streaming is 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance.
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key associated with that specific stream; the encoder needs both. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder.
Install Docker on Amazon Linux 2023
AWS documents this host-installation sequence for an Amazon Linux 2023 EC2 instance. Connect to the instance over SSH, then run:

sudo usermod -a -G docker ec2-userAfter adding ec2-user to the Docker group, log out and reconnect so the group change takes effect. Verify that the Docker client can reach the daemon:
docker infoIf Docker reports that the daemon is unreachable, confirm the service started. AWS notes that a reboot may be needed if it remains inaccessible. Follow the current AWS Docker instructions for Amazon Linux 2023 if package or service details have changed.
Choose and run an encoder container
Docker installation alone does not provide a streaming encoder. Choose a maintained image that supports your EC2 architecture, the codec and encoder you need, and the persistence or restart behavior your production setup requires. The exact image and command depend on that choice; no universal image or EC2 command fits every workload.

Configure the encoder with the URL and key from the intended YouTube stream. Pass the key securely through the image’s supported secret or environment configuration method; do not bake it into a public image, commit it to a source repository, or expose it in shared logs. Check the image’s documentation for the exact option names rather than assuming a generic Docker flag will configure streaming.

Use YouTube’s ingest URL and configure the feed
Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it
YouTube supports RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Copy the RTMPS server URL from the Live Control Room and use the matching stream key. Do not assume an ordinary RTMP URL is encrypted: YouTube notes that the standard RTMP URL may be displayed by default. Your chosen encoder must support RTMPS to use that endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
If the encoder reports an SSL connection error or times out, check that you copied the RTMPS URL rather than the RTMP one. YouTube also suggests specifying port 443 as a troubleshooting step when appropriate for the encoder.

Keep the network path narrow
In this workflow, the encoder initiates an outbound connection from EC2 to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. You do not need to open a public inbound RTMP port simply because the protocol is called RTMP. Keep administrative access such as SSH limited to trusted source addresses, and ensure the instance can make the outbound connection required by the URL and port you selected. The exact network rules depend on your VPC and instance configuration.
Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder according to YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution and codec. YouTube detects incoming settings and transcodes the feed into output formats. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the current values that match your format.

Test the stream before starting the event
- Start the encoder container. Confirm it is running and can reach the selected YouTube ingest URL.
- Check YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room; then start the live event there. For an immediate stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder after entering the URL and key.
- Check both audio and video. Use a representative source with the movement and audio levels expected in the actual broadcast, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and watch-page playback.
- Monitor throughout the broadcast. Prepare the encoder ahead of time, watch for health warnings, and check audio and video after going live.
YouTube says combined stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping a 20% buffer beyond the combined bitrate. The relevant capacity is the instance’s sustained outbound bandwidth, not the viewer’s download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep the stream running and stop it safely
A container can be configured to restart according to its image and Docker setup, but that alone does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: the encoder still needs to produce a valid feed, the EC2 host needs to be available, and the connection to YouTube must work. Decide how you will monitor the process and respond to host, container, or ingest failures before relying on it for a scheduled event.
To finish, stop the encoder feed when the broadcast is over. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

There is no source-backed universal EC2 instance size or price for this setup. CPU or GPU demand depends on the selected encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether encoding is hardware- or software-based. Hosting cost also depends on the instance type, AWS region, and how long it runs. Troubleshooting common failures
- No preview in Live Control Room: Verify that the encoder is running and that both URL and key belong to the intended stream. Check the container’s output for connection or configuration errors.
- TLS, SSL, or timeout error: Confirm the endpoint is the RTMPS URL, ensure the encoder supports RTMPS, and try port 443 if needed.
- Stalls or degraded quality: Compare the combined bitrate with sustained outbound bandwidth, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and review stream health.
- Docker daemon unavailable: Confirm the service started, reconnect after changing Docker group membership, and use AWS’s reboot fallback if the daemon remains inaccessible.
- Stream key may have leaked: Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Copyright and channel policy still apply
Running an encoder in Docker or hosting it on EC2 does not change YouTube’s rules for the stream’s content. Confirm you have the rights to every video, music track, and other material you broadcast; review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies before scheduling a long-running feed. Do not assume that a stream being pre-recorded, looped, or containerized makes reused content permissible.
