For a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube stream, set the output’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds, use CBR, and match the bitrate to YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then choose the playback latency mode in YouTube Live Control Room: low latency for faster viewing with some buffering tradeoff, ultra-low latency for more interaction with greater buffering risk, or normal latency when you need 4K or broader feature support. These settings improve compatibility; they do not guarantee a particular end-to-end delay or an uninterrupted 24-hour session.
First decide which kind of latency you mean
Latency is the delay between the encoder or camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. MediaLive’s encoding and output timing affect the contribution side; YouTube’s playback mode and each viewer’s network and device affect what happens after YouTube receives the feed. A keyframe setting alone cannot promise a fixed glass-to-glass delay.
This guidance is for a direct RTMP/RTMPS contribution from AWS Elemental MediaLive to YouTube. If your MediaLive output goes through MediaPackage v2 or another origin, treat that as a different workflow and configure it for that ingest path.
Recommended settings for direct MediaLive-to-YouTube delivery
Keyframes and GOP
Use a 2-second keyframe interval, YouTube’s recommendation, and do not exceed 4 seconds. Set the MediaLive output’s GOP/keyframe cadence to match the output frame rate: for example, at a constant 30 fps, 2 seconds corresponds to 60 frames; at 60 fps, it corresponds to 120 frames. Confirm whether the relevant MediaLive field expects frames or time before entering a value. The example frame counts assume a constant frame rate.

Rate control, bitrate, and resolution
Use constant bitrate (CBR) and choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists these values:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s guidance, not MediaLive service limits. Do not apply the H.264 rows to another codec or output mode. Make sure the source and contribution network can sustain the selected output. YouTube also publishes guidance for other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations; consult the matching row rather than extrapolating from 1080p.

Codec, audio, and transport
For broad compatibility, use H.264 video with AAC audio. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports codecs including H.264, HEVC, and AV1, with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. Select settings supported by both your MediaLive output and the YouTube ingest configuration, and verify the resulting stream health in YouTube before relying on it.
Choose the playback latency mode in YouTube
Set the mode in the YouTube live event’s settings in Live Control Room. The mode is a viewer-playback choice, not a replacement for MediaLive’s encoding configuration.

| YouTube mode | Choose it when | Tradeoff and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | You need 4K, broader live-feature support, or the greatest compatibility. | Viewers generally wait longer for updates. YouTube describes this mode as supporting all resolutions and live features. |
| Low latency | Viewers benefit from quicker updates, but the program does not depend on near-real-time interaction. | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds. This is not a guarantee; lower buffering margin can increase buffering, and low-latency modes do not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low latency | Audience interaction depends on updates arriving as quickly as practical, such as a live conversation. | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than five seconds. This is not a guarantee; buffering risk is higher, and ultra-low latency is unavailable for 4K. |
For a 4K channel, use normal latency rather than selecting a low-latency mode that does not support 4K. For a 1080p interactive program, ultra-low latency may be worth testing, but choose it only if the audience’s need for faster interaction outweighs the added buffering risk. If disruption is more costly than a few seconds of delay, prefer a mode with more buffering margin.
Do not apply the one-second HLS recommendation to RTMP
AWS’s one-second segment recommendation belongs to its low-latency HLS workflow with MediaPackage v2. In that workflow, segment length, GOP size, retry interval, cache duration, and restart settings can affect latency; AWS recommends one-second segments, a retry interval equal to the segment length, and a lower file-cache duration. Those are not universal settings for a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output.

YouTube’s HLS ingest is also a separate choice from RTMP/RTMPS. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream, has higher latency according to YouTube, and does not offer the ultra-low-latency option. Use HLS if your codecs or other requirements call for it, and follow that workflow’s own segment and playlist requirements rather than treating it as the fastest path.

Rehearse the full path
- Configure the MediaLive output and YouTube event for the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe cadence, protocol, and playback mode.
- Run a test with the actual source, output profile, and network conditions. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before the public start, and verify audio, video, and the selected latency behavior.
- Rehearse the failure cases that matter to your channel: source loss, a MediaLive pipeline or output interruption, and the planned recovery or input switch. A test of a different profile or network does not establish how the production run will behave.
- During the event, monitor the MediaLive pipeline and YouTube stream health. Have an operator or alerting plan for input loss, ingest problems, and a failed handoff; do not treat a 24-hour session as unattended until the actual failure and recovery paths have been exercised.
Build in resilience and a recording path
AWS documents two independent, identical MediaLive pipelines as a resilience option, and schedule actions can be used to switch inputs. These measures can reduce exposure to some failures, but they do not establish uninterrupted service for a particular configuration. Decide in advance how the source, pipeline, and YouTube ingest will behave during a failure, and rehearse the switch.

Keep an independent local or cloud recording if the program must be preserved. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not guarantee an archive for a single 24-hour event. If a YouTube VOD is required, verify current YouTube behavior and plan a separate recording. Splitting a program into shorter events may help with archive planning, but it changes the event schedule and requires a deliberate handoff plan.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- Unexpectedly long delay: Check whether the event is set to normal latency, whether the output is using HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS, and whether the viewer’s connection or device adds delay. Confirm keyframe cadence, but do not expect it alone to determine viewer latency.
- Buffering after selecting ultra-low latency: YouTube warns that ultra-low latency can increase buffering. Test the intended output and audience conditions; if stability matters more than interaction speed, switch to low or normal latency.
- 4K option is unavailable with a low-latency mode: Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K. Use normal latency if 4K is a requirement.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem: Check that the selected protocol, codec, audio format, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval match the YouTube event configuration and guidance. Confirm that the MediaLive output is reaching the intended YouTube ingest destination.
- Image quality fluctuates or drops: Check that rate control is CBR, that the chosen bitrate corresponds to the output’s codec and frame rate, and that the source and network can sustain it. Do not substitute a bitrate recommendation for a different codec or resolution.
- A source or pipeline interruption stops useful output: Follow the rehearsed input-loss and switching plan, check the relevant MediaLive and YouTube health indicators, and confirm recovery before assuming the channel is back on air.
- No 24-hour VOD appears: The documented automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Check the current event and archive behavior, and use the independent recording if the full program must be retained.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 channel is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or changing live source, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating MediaLive: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
