Start by checking whether FFmpeg is re-encoding the video. If the source is already compatible with YouTube and you do not need to change it, copying the encoded video stream instead of encoding every frame can eliminate much of the video-encoding work. If you must re-encode, reduce the output resolution or frame rate to what the content needs, choose a faster mode for the encoder you actually use, and test that it can sustain at least 1Ă— real time. Hardware encoding helps only when your VPS exposes a compatible device and FFmpeg can use it.
Find out where the CPU is going
Look at the FFmpeg command and logs before changing VPS size or buying more compute. An output option such as -c:v copy copies the encoded video packets; an encoder such as libx264 compresses video frames and uses CPU. Filters and transformations—including scaling, overlays, burned-in subtitles, frame-rate changes, and color conversion—also require media processing. FFmpeg options and available encoders depend on the installed build, and command options apply to particular inputs or outputs according to their position. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- If the command selects a video encoder or applies video filters, the VPS is doing video processing.
- If it copies video but still uses substantial CPU, check audio encoding, other filters, multiple concurrent jobs, and the rest of the host workload.
- If the source is a prerecorded file, test whether its existing streams can be sent unchanged before adding a re-encode.
Stream copy is conditional, not a universal fix. The source codec and container, YouTube ingest compatibility, and any processing you need all matter. If a transformation is required, the affected media must be decoded and encoded. Do not add -c copy blindly: an incompatible stream may fail or produce an ingest YouTube cannot use. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest; consult its live encoder settings for the route and codec you intend to use.
Reduce the amount of video the encoder must process
If re-encoding is necessary, choose the lowest resolution and frame rate that still serve the program. Fewer pixels per frame and fewer frames per second generally mean less encoding work, but also mean less image detail or less smooth motion. For example, changing from 1080p60 to 720p30 reduces both dimensions and frame count; whether that is acceptable depends on the source material and audience.

YouTube’s published recommended bitrates below are ingest guidance, not CPU targets or a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode at that setting. The page was accessed on 2026-10-03 and does not display a publication date. Check it again when configuring a live stream because platform guidance can change.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For comparison, YouTube’s minimum bitrate guidance on the same page is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30; 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively at 1080p60; and 2 Mbps and 3 Mbps respectively at 720p30/60. These are platform settings, not a reason to lower bitrate without checking image quality. Ensure the VPS upload path can sustain the chosen video and audio rates.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), progressive scan, square pixels, up to 60 fps, two B-frames and one reference frame, and SDR Rec. 709 guidance. Follow the current settings for your codec and stream mode. The Live Control Room can detect resolution and frame rate by default; a custom stream key permits manual resolution selection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. It also transcodes an ingested live feed into multiple formats for viewers; that platform-side processing does not reduce encoding work on your VPS.
For a 24/7 pipeline, remove filters you do not need. A filter can prevent simple packet copying and add CPU work even when the output resolution is otherwise modest. The cost depends on the particular source, filter chain, encoder, and VPS; there is no universal savings figure.

Choose a faster mode for the encoder in use
Encoder settings are not interchangeable. Identify the actual encoder first, then use its own documentation and test the quality at your chosen bitrate. A preset or speed flag copied from a different encoder may be invalid or have a different meaning.
For VP9 with libvpx
Google’s VP9 live-encoding guidance identifies -quality realtime and speed values 5–8 for live encoding. Within that guidance, higher values such as 7–8 use less CPU but reduce quality compared with 5–6. FFmpeg’s libvpx documentation likewise says higher speed/cpu-used values increase speed at a quality cost. These values apply to VP9/libvpx; they are not x264 presets or hardware-encoder settings. See Google’s VP9 live encoding guidance and the FFmpeg codec documentation.

For other encoders
Inspect the options for the encoder selected in your FFmpeg build rather than assuming one universal “fast” flag. Faster encoding modes commonly trade compression efficiency or image quality for speed, so check the resulting stream at the bitrate YouTube will receive. Keep the necessary output options attached to the correct output, and verify the final command with the installed FFmpeg version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use hardware encoding only if the VPS supports it
FFmpeg supports hardware acceleration paths such as VAAPI and QSV, but that does not mean a generic VPS has an accessible GPU, compatible driver, or usable encoder. Confirm the provider exposes the needed device and that the FFmpeg build includes the relevant support. Then check FFmpeg’s startup and encoding logs to confirm the hardware encoder is actually selected. A command that silently falls back to software encoding will not solve CPU saturation.

Hardware paths can impose device-access, supported-format, and filter constraints. Test the complete workflow—from source through any filters to YouTube ingest—rather than assuming hardware acceleration works with every input or transformation. No particular VPS plan or CPU reduction can be guaranteed without testing that host.
Test real-time performance and YouTube health
A 24/7 stream needs to keep pace continuously, not merely complete a short encode eventually. Google’s VP9 guidance states that live encoding needs at least 1Ă— real-time speed; below 1Ă—, encoding falls behind the live input and can cause buffering or transmission breaks. This is a real-time threshold in that guidance, not a benchmark of VPS CPU savings.
- Run a representative test using the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, filters, and encoder settings.
- Watch FFmpeg’s reported encoding speed and resource use during the test. A speed below 1Ă— means the workflow is not keeping up.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the VPS upload path remains stable at the selected bitrate.
- Test material with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast; YouTube recommends representative testing and monitoring stream health.
- Only after the software path is simplified and tested should you consider whether the instance needs more capacity.
For unattended operation, separately plan supervision, reconnect behavior, logs, and alerts. The appropriate implementation depends on how the VPS and stream process are deployed; no single service-manager or container recipe is established here.
Common CPU and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| CPU remains high despite a simple command | Video is still being encoded, a filter is processing frames, audio is being encoded, or other processes are consuming the host. | Inspect the selected codecs and filter graph, then check other VPS processes. Try copying compatible streams only if no required transformation or compatibility issue prevents it. |
| FFmpeg speed falls below 1Ă— | The encode cannot keep up with the input under the current workload. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary filters, choose a faster mode for the actual encoder, or confirm whether supported hardware encoding is available. Retest the whole path. |
| CPU falls but the picture looks worse | A faster encoder mode or lower resolution/frame rate has traded quality or motion smoothness for lower processing demand. | Compare the result at the intended bitrate. Restore only the resolution, frame rate, or quality level the program needs, then verify that speed remains real time. |
| YouTube rejects or fails to ingest a copied stream | The source codec, container, audio, or ingest path may not be compatible, or the workflow may require a transformation. | Check YouTube’s current codec and ingest guidance. Encode only streams that need conversion rather than assuming all streams can be copied. |
| Hardware encoding has no effect | The device may not be exposed, FFmpeg may lack support, or encoding may be falling back to software. | Confirm device and driver availability, build support, and encoder selection in the logs; check format and filter constraints. |
| Encoding is fast but the live stream still buffers | Upload capacity or stream stability may be inadequate, or YouTube may report a separate stream-health issue. | Check the VPS outbound connection against the chosen bitrate and inspect YouTube stream health; encoding speed alone does not prove delivery is stable. |
