YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers from an event that is ending to a Premiere or another channel’s live stream. It cannot turn that event into a continuous 24/7 broadcast. To make the handoff work, first get a separate destination stream running, then set the source livestream to redirect viewers to it when the source ends.
What Live Redirect does—and what it doesn’t
Live Redirect is an end-of-stream handoff: when your source livestream ends, YouTube can move viewers to the Premiere or live stream you selected. YouTube Help describes the behavior this way: “Once your live stream ends, autoplay will move your viewers to the Premiere or live stream of your choice.” The destination must already have its own continuing video feed. That feed can come from streaming software, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service; Live Redirect does not generate or extend it.
There are therefore three separate pieces: the event that is ending (the source), the already-running continuous broadcast (the destination), and the redirect setting that connects them. YouTube’s documented live-stream destination is another channel’s live stream. Do not assume the setting can roll a source stream into another stream on the same channel unless that option is actually available in your Studio account.
Check eligibility and destination permission
- The channel sending the redirect must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes.
- If the destination is another channel’s live stream, that channel must allow your channel to redirect to its live content. The destination owner manages this in YouTube Studio under Settings → Community. They can allow subscribed channels, all channels, or selected channels; the selected-channel list can contain up to 100 channels.
- The channel must also be able to livestream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says it must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Live Redirect is available for horizontal live streams, not vertical live feeds.
These are YouTube’s documented rules; the setting and eligibility may vary with account status or change as YouTube updates Studio.

Set up the continuous destination first
The destination needs an encoder or service that continues sending video to YouTube after the event ends. YouTube’s encoder directory includes software encoders, standalone hardware encoders, and cloud tools. It describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. Directory listings identify options; they do not establish uptime or prove that providers have equivalent features.
Start a destination stream with an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the destination stream.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or publish it.
- Configure and start the encoder. YouTube’s error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion; use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for bitrate and resolution rather than guessing.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check stream health, and confirm that audio and video are working before you go live.
- Go live in the Control Room. Keep the encoder or service running so the destination remains available when the source event ends.
YouTube documents reusing stream settings and keys when creating another stream. It also documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key, with both limits applying at once. A separate daily stream-creation limit exists, but YouTube’s cited error guidance does not state a fixed number.

Configure Live Redirect on the source event
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the Live tab.
- Hover over the source livestream and select Edit, then Customization.
- Under Redirect, select Add.
- Choose a Premiere or search for another channel’s live stream, then select the destination.
- Save the source stream’s settings. When the source ends, YouTube displays a confirmation that viewers will be redirected.
Tell viewers before the event ends that their screens may take a few seconds to reload. If the destination belongs to another channel, confirm that its redirect permission is in place before relying on the handoff.
Choose how to keep the destination running
| Approach | What it involves | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud service | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. | Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo. |
| Local software encoder | Run streaming software on a computer you operate. | You retain control of the setup, but the computer and internet connection need to keep operating. YouTube lists software encoders as an option; no comparative reliability claim is established here. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | YouTube’s directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming. | Consider whether dedicated hardware fits your production setup, plus its cost and maintenance. Pricing and availability are not established here; the device is not required for Live Redirect and does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 broadcasting. |
| Other cloud services | YouTube’s directory describes Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream for continuous live video streaming. | Check that the service supports your content source, and review its restart and monitoring controls, terms, and published uptime evidence. Directory descriptions do not prove uptime or feature parity. |
Make the stream suitable for a long-running handoff
- Check content rights. Make sure you have the rights to every video, image, and audio track in the continuous stream. A redirect does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or make reused material compliant with platform policies.
- Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video. Confirm that the destination is live and playing correctly before configuring the handoff.
- Plan for stream recovery. A 24/7 destination depends on its encoder or service continuing to send a valid feed. Check the provider’s recovery and monitoring controls; YouTube’s directory descriptions alone are not evidence of uninterrupted operation.
- Understand archiving. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This does not establish that streams longer than 12 hours are prohibited, nor does it guarantee indefinite operation.
Troubleshoot a redirect that does not work
- No Redirect option appears: Verify the sending channel’s subscriber and strike eligibility, confirm the stream is horizontal rather than vertical, and make sure you are editing the source in the Live tab’s Customization settings.
- The destination cannot be selected: If it is another channel’s live stream, ask that channel to allow your channel under Settings → Community. Confirm the destination stream is actually live.
- The destination has no preview or stream health is poor: Check that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are configured, and the video/audio formats are accepted. YouTube identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion; consult its current encoder settings guidance for resolution and bitrate.
- The redirect starts but viewers do not arrive immediately: YouTube says the handoff occurs after the source ends; viewers may need a few seconds for their screens to reload. Make sure the destination is still running.
- You cannot start another stream: Check the active-stream limits of 10 per channel and 3 per stream key. If you encounter a daily creation-limit error, YouTube’s cited guidance does not publish a fixed numeric threshold.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the destination is a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo keeps the playback running from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. Start your free StreamNeo day.
