How to Record a Video for YouTube: Phone, Computer, and Camera Setup

Record with a phone, computer software, or a separate camera. Prepare steady framing, soft light, and clear audio, then upload the saved video through YouTube Studio or the app.

You can record a YouTube video with a phone you already own: plan the shot, capture clear picture and sound, then upload the saved file. On a computer, record with separate software first—YouTube’s computer workflow uploads videos but does not record webcam footage. Start with the equipment you have and add gear only to solve a specific problem.

Choose how to record

Use a phone

For many videos, the simplest route is to record with your phone’s camera and upload through the YouTube app. YouTube describes a mobile device as enough to get started. For a conventional horizontal video, hold the phone sideways to frame in 16:9. If practical, use the rear camera, which can record at a higher resolution than the front camera. ( YouTube Help: Tips to film with mobile; Record & upload a video.)

Use a computer

Record and save the video with computer software, then upload that file through YouTube Studio. YouTube states that it does not have a webcam feature to record videos on a computer, so recording and uploading are separate steps. The appropriate recording software depends on your computer and what you are making; the YouTube upload workflow does not replace it. (YouTube Help: Record & upload a video; Upload YouTube videos – Computer.)

Use a separate camera

A point-and-shoot camera can suit a straightforward standalone setup. A DSLR can offer more creative control, but is heavier, more complex, and typically costs more. YouTube advises thinking about what you want to make and starting with a mobile device before investing. If you plan to connect an external microphone, check that the camera has a compatible microphone input first. (YouTube Help: Video equipment tips.)

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Prepare the shot before recording

  1. Choose the location and framing. Decide what should be in the shot and check the background. For a standard horizontal video, frame the phone in 16:9; choose a different orientation only when it suits the video you intend to make.
  2. Check light and sound. Look at the subject on screen and listen for distracting noise before the take. Move the speaker closer to the microphone if needed.
  3. Check the equipment. Confirm the camera, microphone, and any lights work. Charge the device; for a larger shoot, prepare suitable backups such as batteries, memory cards, or hard drives.
  4. Reduce interruptions. Turn off phone notifications before filming. Get any permissions you need, and respect other people’s privacy when recording.

YouTube’s filming guidance recommends considering location, framing, lighting, and sound in advance rather than discovering problems after a take. (YouTube Help: Filming tips.)

Get a stable picture and usable light

For a steadier phone shot, rest the phone on a stable surface you already have or hold it securely. A flexible tripod or selfie stick is optional if you need to position the phone more reliably or create mobile shots; it is not a requirement for making a video.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Use soft, even light where possible. Indoors, try placing the subject near a window. Outdoors, shade can reduce harsh highlights and dark shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light onto the subject. If daylight or existing room light does not work for the shot, a soft light or camera-mounted light may help. (YouTube Help: Tips to film with mobile; Video equipment tips.)

If your phone has manual focus and exposure controls and you are comfortable using them, set and lock focus and exposure to avoid visible changes during a take. Otherwise, check that the subject remains in focus and the exposure looks acceptable before you record.

Make the audio easy to hear

Start with the built-in microphone: get the speaker close to it, avoid covering it, and choose a quieter spot. Turning off a fan, closing a window, or softening a room’s hard reflective surfaces can reduce distracting noise. Record a short test and listen back before filming a long take.

YouTube’s equipment guidance says an onboard camera microphone may require staying three to four feet away for the best audio. For a speaker who is distant or moving, a wireless lavalier mic attaches to the person; a shotgun mic is directional and can capture natural sound from farther away. These are options, not automatic upgrades: check microphone compatibility and the camera’s external-mic port before buying. (YouTube Help: Video equipment tips; Tips to film with mobile.)

Decide whether any extra equipment is worth it

Problem to solve Try first Optional equipment Check before choosing
Shaky or awkwardly positioned phone Rest it on a stable surface or hold it securely. Flexible tripod or selfie stick. Whether it fits the phone and the shot you want.
Hard-to-hear speaker or noisy location Move closer to the phone’s microphone and reduce background noise. Compatible external microphone; a lavalier suits a moving or distant speaker, while a shotgun mic is directional. Compatibility with the phone or camera; confirm the camera has an external-mic port.
Insufficient or harsh light Try window light indoors or shade outdoors; reposition the subject. Soft light or camera-mounted light. Whether existing light can achieve the look before adding equipment.
A need for a separate camera Begin with the phone if it meets the production goal. Point-and-shoot for a simple standalone option; DSLR for more creative control. Portability, setup complexity, creative needs, and microphone connections.

The useful choice is the one that addresses a real limitation in your current setup. YouTube’s equipment guidance does not make a separate camera or accessory a prerequisite for starting. (YouTube Help: Video equipment tips.)
