For a temporary failure while FFmpeg is still running, wrap its RTMP output in FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer and enable recovery. If FFmpeg exits, a separate process supervisor must restart it; if YouTube rejects the stream or ends the event, retries alone cannot fix that. These are three different failure modes, so the right recovery depends on what stopped working.
Choose the recovery method for the failure
| What happened | What to use | What it cannot fix |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg remains alive, but a temporary network or output write failure interrupts publishing. | FFmpeg’s FIFO output muxer with attempt_recovery. |
An invalid key, an unreachable destination that stays unreachable, or a YouTube event that has been stopped or changed. |
| The FFmpeg process exits. | A host-level supervisor or wrapper that starts a new FFmpeg process and records its exit status. | A persistent configuration or ingest problem; restarting the same failing command can create a restart loop. |
| YouTube rejects the connection or the event is no longer available. | Inspect the current event settings, YouTube Live Control Room, stream health messages, and FFmpeg logs; correct the underlying issue. | Neither FIFO recovery nor a process restart can make a rejected key or closed event valid. |
Enable recovery for a temporary RTMP output failure
FFmpeg documents using the FIFO pseudo-muxer to keep processing at real-time rate during a temporary failure and retry streaming. Its example attempts recovery every second indefinitely; that is documented behavior, not a guarantee that every YouTube disconnect or event state will recover.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
- Replace
INPUTwith the actual programme source. - Replace the example destination with the current event’s YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Get them from the channel’s Live Control Room rather than relying on a URL copied from an old tutorial. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS; its help page says to select the lock icon in Stream settings to display the RTMPS URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
- Start FFmpeg and watch both its logs and YouTube’s stream health. When output recovers, check that the event is actually receiving a healthy stream.
Understand the FIFO options
-f fifo -fifo_format flvplaces the FLV output muxer behind the FIFO pseudo-muxer. The FIFO runs the output muxer in a separate thread and can restart output after failure.-attempt_recovery 1enables recovery; it is off by default.-recovery_wait_time 1sets a one-second wait between recovery attempts. The FIFO default is five seconds.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets input processing continue if the FIFO queue fills by dropping packets. This favors keeping the input timeline moving, but packets can be omitted during a prolonged output failure. Without this option, encoding can block when the queue fills.max_recovery_attemptsdefaults to zero, meaning unlimited successive attempts. Choose a retry limit and logging policy deliberately for your installation; unlimited retries do not resolve a permanent failure.
Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
FIFO recovery applies while FFmpeg is still running. If the process terminates, use a separate host-level supervisor or wrapper to relaunch it. Record the exit status and add a delay or bounded retry policy so a broken command does not restart in a tight loop. The appropriate setup differs across Linux with systemd, Windows, macOS, containers, and other hosts; there is no single cross-platform service configuration established here. An operating-system restart policy is not an FFmpeg protocol flag.
Do not confuse HTTP input reconnect flags with RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg’s reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_on_http_error options are documented for the HTTP protocol. They can be relevant to HTTP reads, commonly an HTTP input, but they are not a general fix for a failed RTMP publishing output. For transient output recovery in this workflow, use the FIFO muxer.

Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings deliberately
Use the URL and key for the actual event. YouTube recommends testing before going live, choosing a quality that the available upload connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Its current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR); it recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
| H.264 setting in YouTube’s current guidance | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published values, accessed in 2026, not a measurement of your uplink or a setting specific to Indian music channels. Select bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use, then test against the upload connection available at the streaming location. The channel’s country or music genre does not establish a special bitrate.

Troubleshoot repeated reconnects
- FFmpeg keeps logging recovery attempts: Check whether the destination is reachable and the event is still accepting a stream. Verify the current event URL, key, and protocol in Live Control Room. Repeated retries cannot repair persistent network failure or rejected credentials.
- YouTube reports a connection timeout or SSL error: Recheck the RTMPS URL, protocol, server, and port against the current event settings. YouTube specifically identifies these as items to check for those errors.
- The stream is unstable even without a disconnect: Test at a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and inspect YouTube’s stream health messages. Test audio and motion similar to the intended programme before going live.
- FFmpeg disappears rather than retrying: Inspect its logs and exit status, then configure a host-level supervisor with a delay or retry limit. FIFO does not restart a process that has ended.
- Video or audio has gaps after recovery: If the FIFO queue overflowed with packet dropping enabled, omitted packets during the output interruption are a possible cause. Disabling packet dropping can instead allow encoding to block when the queue fills.
- The event appears stopped or changed: Check its state in Live Control Room. The available guidance does not establish that a particular event or archive will always be preserved after a reconnect, so do not assume a successful FFmpeg retry restores the same YouTube event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing FFmpeg and a host supervisor yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
