How to Queue Podcast Episodes on a YouTube Live Stream Without Restarting

You can queue podcast episodes in OBS while keeping its encoder output connected to YouTube: use an OBS VLC Video source for an ordered playlist, or switch between individual Media Sources manually. YouTube receives the encoder feed; OBS controls which media appears in it. This is the workflow to configure and verify, not a guarantee that every computer or setup will avoid buffering or interruption.

What “queue” means for a live podcast

This is an encoder-side queue, not a viewer’s YouTube watch queue. YouTube’s Live Control Room connects to streaming software or a hardware encoder using a stream URL and stream key. OBS then supplies the video and audio in its scene. You can change the media in that scene without deliberately stopping the encoder output, but the YouTube and OBS documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted playback in every configuration.

YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream-key role are described in Get started with live streaming and Manage live stream settings. OBS documents its local media and playlist behavior in Media Sources and its scene-source controls in Sources Guide.

Choose a playlist or manual switching

OBS method How it queues episodes Dependency and control
VLC Video source Plays multiple playlist items in sequence when shuffle is off. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Best suited to an ordered, advancing queue.
Individual Media Sources Each episode is a separate source; make the episode you want visible. Gives you manual selection of a particular episode. Playback behavior when a source is hidden depends on its settings.

OBS documents both options but does not establish that one is more reliable than the other. Media Source supports local video and audio files, including formats such as MP4 and MP3. These instructions concern local media in OBS; exact stream controls differ among encoders.

Set up a queued playlist in OBS

  1. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder-based stream. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings, then connect the encoder. Use the existing working key if the stream is already configured; resetting it means you must update OBS with the newly generated key.
  2. Add the episode queue to the scene. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that feeds your stream. Add the local episode files to its playlist in the intended order. Install VLC if the VLC Video source is not available in OBS.
  3. Set the playlist behavior. Turn shuffle off for sequential playback. Choose the loop behavior you want, and review visibility behavior so you know whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is hidden. OBS documents playlist loop and shuffle options for VLC Video sources.
  4. Check source activation settings. If you use individual Media Sources, inspect “Restart playback when source becomes active.” Set it according to whether the episode should resume or restart when you show the source. Confirm how hidden sources behave before using them to switch episodes.
  5. Verify before relying on it live. If practical, test with a private or unlisted stream. Confirm the picture, episode order, audio levels, and transitions, and make sure OBS remains connected while playback changes. This is a prudent check, not a guarantee against a later computer, file, or connection problem.

Switch episodes without stopping the encoder

With a VLC playlist, let the queue advance or update the playlist in OBS while its output remains connected. With individual Media Sources, show the source for the episode you want and hide the previous one. The intended division is that OBS changes the scene media while YouTube continues receiving the encoder feed. If the encoder itself stalls or disconnects, changing a source will not fix that underlying problem.

Do not reset a working YouTube stream key just to add or change episodes. The key connects the encoder feed to YouTube; the playlist belongs in OBS. A reset requires replacing the key in the encoder settings before it can send the feed again.

Common problems and checks

  • VLC Video is missing: OBS requires VLC installed for this source to become available.
  • Episodes play in an unexpected order: review the playlist order and make sure shuffle is off.
  • An episode restarts after switching scenes: check “Restart playback when source becomes active” on the Media Source.
  • Playback stops or continues when hidden unexpectedly: review source visibility and playback behavior settings; test the exact scene transition.
  • YouTube is no longer receiving the stream: check whether OBS is still connected and whether the stream URL and key are correct. If you reset the key, update the encoder with the replacement.
  • Video changes but audio is absent or wrong: check the selected media source and audio in a test output before relying on the queue live.
