FFmpeg sends your source to a MediaMTX path; MediaMTX then forwards that path to YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Keep both audio and video tracks in the forwarded feed: MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. [MediaMTX: Forward streams]
How the relay works
This setup has two separate connections to verify: FFmpeg publishes to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX forwards the published path to YouTube. The FFmpeg command does not send directly to YouTube; the forwarding destination is configured in MediaMTX. [MediaMTX: Forward streams] [MediaMTX: Publish to the server with RTMP]
Set up YouTube and MediaMTX
-
Create or open the active YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The key is a credential that allows an encoder to send a feed to your YouTube stream. YouTube’s instructions are to enter the live server URL and stream key into the encoder. [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
-
Configure a MediaMTX path
Choose a path name, such as
mypath, in your MediaMTX configuration. In the matchingpathsentry, configure aforwarddestination made from the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key, separated by#. The documented pattern isrtmps://<current-youtube-ingest-host>/<path>#<stream-key>. Use the URL displayed in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a documentation example hostname is current. MediaMTX’s example host reflects what YouTube reported when that documentation page was last updated. [MediaMTX: Forward streams]The Tool Desk

Publish from FFmpeg to MediaMTX
For a local MediaMTX server listening on its documented RTMP port, a file-based example is:

Replace
file.mp4and the host/path with your actual input and MediaMTX address. The-reoption reads a file at its native rate; it is appropriate for file playback, not a universal setting for every live input.-stream_loop -1repeats the file indefinitely.-c copycopies the existing streams without re-encoding, so this example is suitable only if the source tracks and codecs fit the workflow. [MediaMTX: Publish to the server with RTMP] -
Use encrypted forwarding and protect the key
MediaMTX recommends changing the example destination from RTMP to RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. Do not expose the stream key in screenshots, public configuration files, or logs. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the MediaMTX forwarding destination. [MediaMTX: Forward streams] [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]

The MediaMTX page also describes a certificate fingerprint observation from its own check at the time of that page’s update. That observation is not a guarantee about the current YouTube endpoint; verify current TLS behavior before changing certificate validation, and do not copy an old exception blindly. [MediaMTX: Forward streams]
-
Confirm tracks and test the full route
Check that the path arriving at MediaMTX contains audio and video, then check that the YouTube preview and stream health show the forwarded feed. MediaMTX says YouTube requires both tracks and silently rejects video-only streams. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video motion and monitoring stream health and messages. If the program is intended to be silent, include an audio track rather than omitting audio entirely. [MediaMTX: Forward streams] [YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]

Choose encoder settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Choose a resolution and bitrate supported by the source and sustainable on the actual upload connection, then validate them with a test. [YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]
| Encoding and mode | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |

- Resolution and frame rate: Higher modes require more upload capacity. The source must support the output mode you select.
- Codec: Choose among the codecs YouTube currently lists and ensure your FFmpeg build and source support that choice.
- Bitrate and keyframes: Set CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, then use YouTube’s ingest feedback to assess the result.
- Audio: Preserve an audio track and use a listed audio codec, even when the intended program has no audible content.
Troubleshoot by separating the two legs
- YouTube has no preview or rejects ingest: Check whether the forwarded feed contains both audio and video. A video-only feed can be silently rejected. [MediaMTX: Forward streams]
- MediaMTX receives FFmpeg, but YouTube does not: First verify that FFmpeg reaches the intended MediaMTX host and path. Then check the matching MediaMTX path’s forwarding destination, current YouTube URL, and key for the active stream. [MediaMTX: Publish to the server with RTMP] [MediaMTX: Forward streams] [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
- The stream key no longer works or may have leaked: Reset the key in YouTube Studio, then replace it in the MediaMTX forward destination. [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
- Quality is poor or ingest is unstable: Check that the selected bitrate is sustainable on the upload connection, test with representative content, and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. [YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]
- RTMPS reports a TLS or certificate problem: Confirm the current destination and verify against the current endpoint and MediaMTX version. Do not apply an old fingerprint or validation exception without checking it against the present connection. [MediaMTX: Forward streams]
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different option from configuring your own FFmpeg-to-MediaMTX relay: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
- Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
- Uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
