Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a self-hosted relay that forwards an incoming stream continuously to YouTube, MediaMTX is the clearer starting point: its documentation includes a native YouTube RTMPS forward example. SRS supports RTMP publishing and server-side forwarding, but the inspected examples do not provide an equally direct YouTube RTMPS recipe. That is a documentation difference, not proof that MediaMTX performs better. Test your chosen server version and confirm YouTube receives both audio and video before relying on either for a 24/7 channel.
Which should you choose for sending a continuous stream to YouTube?
Choose MediaMTX if you want the more explicit documented path from an incoming stream to YouTube: accept a stream on a MediaMTX path, then configure a native forward destination with YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key. Choose SRS if it already fits your RTMP infrastructure or you need its documented forwarding and dynamic-destination patterns, but verify the precise YouTube RTMPS setup for your SRS release before committing.
This comparison concerns the documented configuration path, not measured performance. The available documentation does not establish which server has better uptime, reconnect behavior, CPU or RAM use, throughput, or delivery success for a single continuous stream. Those outcomes depend on the version, input source, host, network, and YouTube stream health.
| Decision point | MediaMTX | SRS |
|---|---|---|
| Direct YouTube example in the inspected documentation | Yes. The forwarding guide shows a YouTube destination pattern and advises using RTMPS. | No direct YouTube RTMPS recipe in the inspected forwarding examples. The docs establish RTMP publishing and forwarding to RTMP destinations. |
| Incoming stream role | Accepts streams over multiple protocols, then routes or forwards them. | Accepts RTMP publishers; check the intended input path and release for other requirements. |
| Forwarding configuration documented | Path-level forward destination. |
Vhost-level forwarding to configured destinations; dynamic forwarding can obtain RTMP URLs from a backend. |
| Setup implications for this task | The direct example makes it the lower-friction documented starting point. | May require more version-specific verification of the destination, TLS, path, and key behavior. |
| Performance winner established? | No comparative measurement established. | No comparative measurement established. |
The setup-complexity judgment follows the examples available in the documentation; it is not a usability test. The cited SRS RTMP page is v7 and marked unstable, while its forwarding reference is v5, so do not mix configuration snippets across releases without checking the docs for the version you deploy.

What MediaMTX and SRS do
MediaMTX
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and proxy. It can accept and serve streams over protocols including SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, HLS, MPEG-TS, and RTP, and its documented feature set includes forwarding, hot-reloaded configuration, recording, authentication, metrics, and a single executable for Linux, Windows, and macOS. For this YouTube use case, the important feature is the path-level native forward destination.
SRS
SRS documents RTMP ingest from encoders such as OBS or FFmpeg and forwarding of published RTMP streams to configured destinations. Its v7 RTMP overview notes that RTMP is commonly used to publish to services including YouTube, but that general protocol context is not itself a verified SRS-to-YouTube RTMPS configuration. The forwarding reference documents static destinations and a dynamic mode where SRS requests destination RTMP URLs from an HTTP backend.

Configure a MediaMTX relay to YouTube
MediaMTX’s forwarding guide shows a path-level forward entry. Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room for the channel and stream you intend to use. The sample endpoint in the MediaMTX documentation reflects what YouTube reported when that documentation page was last updated; use the current value shown in your account rather than hard-coding the sample.
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its current stream URL and stream key. Keep the key secret: do not place a live key in public logs, repositories, screenshots, or shared examples.
- Choose an incoming MediaMTX path. The sender must publish to a path that MediaMTX is configured to accept. Replace
mypathbelow with that path. - Add the forward destination. In MediaMTX configuration, add the following shape and replace the destination and key with the values for your channel. In this syntax,
#separates the destination URL from the stream key.
paths:
mypath:
forward:
- dest: rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL#STREAM_KEY
Use the RTMPS scheme for an encrypted connection, as the MediaMTX forwarding guide advises. Do not treat the example hostname as permanent: take the current ingest URL from YouTube. Protect the configuration file because it contains the stream key.

Make sure the forwarded source has audio and video
The MediaMTX guide warns that YouTube requires both an audio and a video track, and that video-only streams are silently rejected. Check the incoming source and the YouTube preview or stream health; a visible video track alone is not enough. If the source lacks audio, provide an audio track before forwarding rather than assuming YouTube will accept a silent video-only input.
When native forwarding is not enough
MediaMTX’s guide points to FFmpeg for forwarding cases that require transcoding or filtering not covered by the native forward feature. That adds a separate process and configuration to maintain. Use it only when the source or destination actually requires processing; the direct path-level forward is the simpler documented route when the stream can pass through as-is.

How to approach SRS forwarding
SRS’s forwarding reference shows a vhost-level forward block with forwarding enabled and configured destinations. Its static examples target other RTMP servers or cluster nodes. A dynamic-forwarding option calls an HTTP backend and uses RTMP URLs that backend returns.
Those examples establish SRS forwarding capability, but they do not by themselves establish a working YouTube RTMPS destination. Before using SRS for this workflow, check the forwarding documentation for the exact release you will run and verify support for the current YouTube destination, encrypted RTMPS connection, stream-key handling, and certificate behavior. Do not infer those details from a host-and-port example. Because the available SRS references span v5 forwarding documentation and a v7 RTMP page marked unstable, use version-matched configuration guidance.

Match the encoder settings to YouTube, not to the relay brand
The ingest settings below are YouTube guidance; they are not special capabilities or performance figures for MediaMTX or SRS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, supports RTMP/RTMPS, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. Its guidance permits frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and lists AAC or MP3 audio and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
| YouTube encoder video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s published encoder video-bitrate figures on its guidance page accessed in 2026. They are not measurements of relay throughput, total internet bandwidth guarantees, or MediaMTX-versus-SRS benchmarks. Allow for audio and network overhead when planning an upload connection; a bitrate recommendation does not guarantee that a particular connection will sustain it.
Test before leaving a stream running
- Test with representative movement and audio, not just a still frame or silent test clip.
- Check available upload speed against the stream’s planned bitrate and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing.
- Confirm YouTube receives both tracks and that its preview and stream health are acceptable before treating the relay as ready for continuous use.
- Test the actual server version, input source, and network you will use. Documentation alone does not establish reconnect reliability or uninterrupted delivery.
Troubleshooting a continuous YouTube relay
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept or show the forwarded video | The source is video-only, which the MediaMTX guide says YouTube silently rejects. | Verify that the incoming stream includes audio as well as video, then check YouTube preview and stream health. |
| The forward destination does not connect | Stale ingest URL, incorrect key, malformed destination syntax, or use of an unverified SRS destination configuration. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, check the MediaMTX # separator if applicable, and validate the exact SRS release’s RTMPS behavior. |
| Playback or stream health is unstable | Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, or encoder settings that do not suit the connection. | Test sustained upload with representative content, compare against YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate, and inspect stream-health messages. |
| SRS configuration copied from an example fails | The example may target a different RTMP server or SRS version; the inspected forwarding examples do not prove YouTube RTMPS compatibility. | Use documentation matching the deployed release and verify destination URL, TLS, key, and certificate handling with a test stream. |
| Stream forwarding requires a filter or transcode | Native pass-through forwarding does not cover the required transformation. | For MediaMTX use, the forwarding guide suggests FFmpeg for cases needing transcoding or filtering; account for the extra process and validate output at YouTube. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo avoids maintaining a self-hosted relay: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home internet connection has to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
