How to Configure NGINX RTMP for 720p YouTube Streaming on a 2 GB VPS

You can configure NGINX RTMP to accept a live stream from a publisher and relay it to YouTube, but a 2 GB VPS is not a guaranteed fit for every workload. Start with pass-through: it avoids adding an encode job to the VPS. For YouTube 720p H.264, use 3 Mbps as the published minimum or 8 Mbps as the recommendation, with constant bitrate (CBR) and two-second keyframes. Obtain YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room, and keep the key private.

How the relay works

Your encoder or other publisher sends an RTMP stream to the VPS. NGINX RTMP listens for that connection under an application name, then pushes the stream onward to YouTube. The app portion of the publisher URL must match the NGINX application block. The arut/nginx-rtmp-module project documents RTMP live streaming and push/pull relaying; its example listener uses port 1935.

This is distinct from having YouTube receive a stream directly from your encoder: in this arrangement, the VPS is an intermediary. Its network connection must sustain the outgoing stream, and the publisher must be able to reach the VPS on the configured port.

Set the YouTube encoder values

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives the following figures for H.264 720p. They are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS or network will deliver stable video.

Output Video bitrate Keyframes Audio
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended Every 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds apart AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps for stereo
720p at 60 fps, H.264 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended Every 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds apart AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps for stereo

Set the encoder to CBR. Choose a frame rate that matches your content and configure its keyframe interval in seconds, not merely as an assumed fixed number of frames. YouTube recommends RTMPS, described in its encoder guidance as a secure extension to RTMP.

Install an NGINX RTMP module compatible with your server

Do not assume the NGINX package already includes RTMP support. The installation route depends on your operating system, NGINX edition, and package source. The arut module project describes building the module alongside NGINX source. Separately, F5’s RTMP instructions cover its dynamic module for NGINX Plus; those instructions are specific to NGINX Plus and should not be treated as universal commands for community NGINX packages.

Follow the installation instructions for the exact package or build you have. Confirm that the module is loaded and that the running NGINX binary accepts the RTMP directives before relying on the service. If the directives are reported as unknown, the module is absent or not loaded; resolve that before proceeding.

Configure the receiving application and relay

The following is an illustrative structural pattern, not a validated drop-in configuration. Directive support and syntax depend on the module build. Configure the relay according to that build’s documentation and use the current YouTube ingest endpoint supplied in Live Control Room.

rtmp {

        listen 1935;
        chunk_size 4000;

        application live {
            live on;

            # supported syntax and YouTube's current ingest URL.
        }
    }
}

The application name here is live. The publisher URL should therefore use that app segment, for example rtmp://YOUR_SERVER_ADDRESS/live/STREAM_NAME. Replace the example address and stream name with your own values. This is the URL your encoder publishes to, not YouTube’s destination URL.

The module documentation describes push relaying in an application, but the precise directive and endpoint arrangement must be checked against your installed module. Do not paste a real YouTube stream key into a public configuration example, issue tracker, or shared log. Restrict access to configuration files that contain credentials.

Get YouTube’s RTMPS destination and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the stream and reveal or copy the RTMPS stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS help page describes obtaining these values and troubleshooting the URL.
  2. Use the actual URL and key YouTube provides for that stream. Do not assume a fixed server name or path: YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingest server and path, and port 443.
  3. Configure the NGINX-side relay to connect to that destination using the installed module’s supported syntax. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS; use a relay implementation that supports TLS and the destination port rather than changing only the URL text.
  4. Keep the key secret. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings before broadcasting again.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Check the NGINX configuration with nginx -t. F5 documents this validation-and-reload flow for its NGINX Plus dynamic module; use the equivalent commands appropriate to your package and service setup.
  2. Reload or restart NGINX using the service procedure for your operating system, then confirm it starts without configuration errors.
  3. Start the publisher with the VPS address and matching /live/ application path. Confirm that the publisher connects to port 1935 and that the relay can reach YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
  4. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public. Verify resolution, frame rate, audio, and dropped-frame indicators with the intended encoder settings.
  5. Observe the VPS during a sustained test at the intended bitrate. Record CPU, memory, network use, and any disconnects; a short successful connection alone does not establish that the setup will remain stable for a long broadcast.

Pass-through or transcoding?

Approach What it does When it fits 2 GB VPS caveat
Pass-through relay Forwards the incoming encoded stream without changing its video settings. Use when the publisher already supplies a YouTube-compatible 720p H.264 stream and suitable audio. Avoids adding a VPS encoding workload, but does not guarantee capacity; test the actual stream and server.
Transcoding Uses an encoder such as FFmpeg to transform the stream before forwarding. Use only when a format or setting change is genuinely needed and the server can sustain it. The module supports FFmpeg-based transcoding, but the available documentation does not establish CPU or RAM requirements for a 720p encode on a 2 GB VPS.

Do not add transcoding simply because the stream passes through NGINX. Encoding can materially change the workload. No universal RAM or CPU threshold for a given VPS plan is established here, so make the decision from your own sustained test rather than the memory label alone.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • NGINX rejects the configuration with an unknown RTMP directive: the RTMP module may not be installed or loaded, or the instructions may not match your NGINX edition. Confirm the package and module build, then use its corresponding installation and loading procedure.
  • The publisher cannot connect: check that NGINX is running, listening on the configured port, and reachable through the VPS firewall and any provider-level network rules. Confirm that the publisher URL uses the configured application name.
  • The publisher connects but YouTube does not receive the stream: check the relay’s destination URL, key, TLS support, and outbound access to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint on port 443. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room rather than relying on a remembered endpoint.
  • YouTube reports an invalid key or stream URL: verify that you copied the key for the intended stream and that the complete RTMPS URL, including its path, is intact. Replace an exposed key.
  • Video quality is unstable or YouTube reports ingest problems: check whether the publisher sustains the configured bitrate, whether the VPS has sufficient network capacity, and whether encoding settings follow YouTube’s CBR and keyframe guidance. The 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended figures are not network-capacity guarantees.
  • The VPS slows or the stream drops during encoding: determine whether transcoding is consuming resources, and test pass-through if the incoming stream already matches YouTube’s requirements. The documented material does not provide a safe transcoding preset for every 2 GB VPS.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Technical relay configuration does not grant rights to broadcast the video or audio. Before going live, confirm you have permission for every included recording, song, image, and other protected material. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content; a technically healthy ingest can still face a copyright claim, restriction, or removal.
