OBS and SRS are not alternatives at the same layer. OBS encodes and publishes your video; SRS is a media server that can receive and relay or convert a stream. If OBS can stream reliably straight to YouTube, a VPS relay is optional. Use SRS on a VPS when you specifically need a server-side ingest point, relay, or protocol conversion—not on the assumption that an India-based VPS will automatically make streaming more reliable.

Which setup should you choose?

Need Practical starting point Trade-off
Publish from a computer with a dependable connection; no server-side relay or conversion required OBS directly to YouTube Fewer components to operate, but the source computer and its connection must remain available during the broadcast.
Receive a stream on a server, relay it, or convert between protocols OBS or FFmpeg to SRS on a VPS, then onward to YouTube Adds a server, network route, configuration, monitoring, and possible transfer charges.
Keep uploaded video looping on YouTube without leaving a home computer running StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. It is a hosted YouTube service for uploaded videos, not a camera-based encoder or a general-purpose SRS relay.

The relay architecture is source/encoder (such as OBS or FFmpeg) → SRS on a Linux VPS → YouTube ingest. OBS produces the encoded audio/video; SRS receives and handles the stream. Without a need for the intermediate server, sending directly from OBS is the simpler arrangement. Whether an SRS VPS improves resilience depends on the actual routes, server availability, and reconnect behavior; there is no established India-specific route or reliability comparison here.

What OBS and SRS each do

OBS: encode and publish

OBS Studio captures or plays the source, encodes audio and video, and publishes the resulting stream. It can publish directly to YouTube or, as the SRS project README demonstrates, use a custom service to publish to an SRS RTMP endpoint such as rtmp://localhost/live with a stream key. That example shows OBS publishing to SRS; it is not a complete recipe for forwarding from SRS to YouTube.

SRS: receive, relay, or convert

The SRS project README identifies its current project line as SRS 8.0 and lists support for RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181 on Linux and macOS architectures. The project recommends Docker and documents an OBS-to-SRS custom-service setup. Its own description calls SRS “a simple, high-performance, AI-driven real-time media server”; that is the project’s wording, not an independent performance measurement.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The detailed SRS RTMP reference available for this topic is explicitly archived version 5.0. Treat it as general protocol background, not as version-specific instructions for SRS 8.0. Check the documentation for the exact SRS release you deploy before configuring forwarding to YouTube.

Configure YouTube ingest and encoder settings

  1. Get the destination from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the ingest URL and stream key for the broadcast. Use the exact destination shown there for the outbound YouTube leg; the key is a credential, so keep it private and do not place it in public logs or shared configuration.
  2. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps.
  3. Set constant bitrate and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  4. Choose a profile your connection can sustain. YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 examples: 1080p30 has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; 1080p60 has a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are encoder-setting figures, not a VPS provider’s transfer allowance or total bandwidth bill.
  5. Test before relying on a long session. Check YouTube stream health, audio and video quality, and the stability of the source-to-server and server-to-YouTube legs if relaying. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and checking backup encoder failover.

YouTube transcodes live video for different viewer formats and network conditions, but that does not make an unstable incoming feed reliable. For a relay, sustained VPS outbound traffic is approximately the stream bitrate over time, plus protocol overhead and any additional viewers or destinations served by that VPS. Estimate charges using the provider’s actual transfer terms.

Plan the VPS around the workload, not its headline price

No current India-provider price comparison or measured India-to-YouTube ingest route comparison is established here, so there is no evidence-based “best low-cost India VPS” to name. Compare the plan and the actual route you intend to use:

  • Outbound data: Check the included transfer, whether outbound traffic is metered or capped, overage rates, and fair-use limits. A headline claim of “unlimited” does not by itself establish unrestricted sustained streaming.
  • Real total cost: Include taxes, traffic overages, and any static IP, backup, or monitoring service you need.
  • Compute headroom: A pure relay is a different workload from software transcoding. If you plan to transcode, assess CPU and memory for that specific encoding workload; no low-cost VPS benchmark is available here.
  • Route quality: Test packet loss and stability from the proposed India VPS location to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint at the bitrate you intend to use, over representative periods. Region alone does not establish route quality.
  • Recovery and operations: Check restart controls, health checks, logs, alerting, and whether a second publisher can take over.
  • Provider terms: Read the chosen plan’s availability commitments and support terms. A cloud deployment guide is not proof that a particular plan suits this stream.

Huawei Cloud documents an example of SRS deployed with Docker on a cloud server. It is an implementation example, not a verified recommendation of a specific Flexus plan, price, or India route.

Account for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

“24/7” describes the intended broadcast, not a guarantee of a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance separately warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

If a dependable archive matters, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions and keeping a separate local recording. Verify the result on your channel before relying on it; one uninterrupted 24/7 session is not a dependable way to ensure a complete archive or rewind history.

Copyright and channel policy still apply

Using a VPS, OBS, or SRS does not change the rights required for the video and audio you broadcast. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check that your permissions cover continuous or repeated playback. A technically stable loop does not establish that content is eligible for YouTube monetization or compliant with channel policies. Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube, rather than to learn or operate an SRS relay, StreamNeo is a simpler hosted option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and has 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots.

Troubleshoot common relay and streaming problems

Symptom What to check Practical response
YouTube shows no incoming video Confirm the active YouTube ingest URL and stream key, the selected encoder destination, and whether the upstream publisher reaches SRS. Correct the destination or key in the appropriate leg, then check SRS logs and YouTube stream health. Keep the stream key private.
OBS reaches SRS but YouTube does not The OBS-to-SRS example is only the first leg; it does not configure SRS forwarding to YouTube. Check the forwarding setup against documentation for the exact SRS release and verify the YouTube outbound URL and key.
Video buffers, drops frames, or stream health degrades Check available upload capacity on the source-to-SRS leg, VPS outbound route, packet loss, and whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable. Test at representative times and lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the profile. Do not assume an India region fixes the route.
Audio/video quality is poor despite a successful connection Review codec support, CBR, keyframe interval, encoder load, and YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Use settings within YouTube’s guidance, test before the long broadcast, and monitor both audio and video.
The stream stops after a server or process interruption Check server availability, restart behavior, health checks, publisher reconnect behavior, and alerts. Configure and test recovery procedures; do not treat a VPS or relay as an automatic uptime guarantee.
The broadcast exists but its archive or rewind is incomplete Check session duration against YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR guidance. For archive continuity, consider shorter sessions and a separate local recording, then verify the workflow on the channel.

Bottom line for an India-based channel

Use OBS directly to YouTube when direct publishing meets your needs. Put SRS on a VPS only when you need its server-side receiving, relay, or conversion role, and evaluate the actual route, transfer terms, and recovery controls before committing to a plan. Neither the architecture nor a server’s location alone proves improved reliability. If you simply want uploaded programming to keep looping on YouTube while your computer is off, StreamNeo is the hosted alternative described above.
