Reconnect helps OBS recover from an interruption; it cannot fix an unstable internet connection, a failing computer, or a YouTube-side problem. For an always-on channel, test the full setup before leaving it unattended and plan for YouTube’s stream and archive limits.
First, identify what actually stopped
A broadcast ending does not automatically mean OBS stopped working. Check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room soon after an interruption, and preserve the OBS log covering that period.
- OBS closed or crashed: investigate the application, computer stability, and system resources.
- OBS is still open but reports reconnecting or dropped frames: focus first on the connection between the computer and YouTube’s ingest server.
- OBS output is active but the YouTube event ended: check the event’s status and configuration in Live Control Room. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether an encoder can start or stop a stream; they are not network-recovery settings. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
The OBS Project says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. That is a useful starting point, not proof of which device or service is at fault. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (published 2024-09-30) lists possible causes including Wi‑Fi instability, router or modem connectivity, cables, network cards, VPNs, and security or network-prioritization software.
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find the network or reconnect options and confirm Automatically Reconnect is enabled. OBS’s overview guide describes automatic reconnect among the advanced settings.
- Set the retry delay and retry count with the likely interruption in mind, if those controls are available in your version and output.
- Apply the settings, then test by briefly interrupting the connection in a controlled test—not during an important public broadcast.
Do not assume that retries happen at a fixed interval. The OBS Project’s version 32.2.2 API documentation says that for outputs supporting reconnect, retry wait doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services. The API describes output behavior; it does not establish one default retry count or delay for every OBS version, service, or plugin. OBS output API reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reconnect is a recovery mechanism, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. If the fault persists or the output exhausts its retries, fixing the underlying cause—or restoring the connection—still matters.
Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
Choose encoder settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you are using, then check that your stable upload capacity can support the outgoing bitrate. A speed test and a preflight stream can reveal problems, but a brief peak reading is not a dependable measure of sustained capacity. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; its encoder guidance provides different bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s published table lists the following figures. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection will hold a stream reliably.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
If OBS reports dropped frames and your upload cannot consistently sustain the configured bitrate, lower the bitrate and test again. This can reduce picture quality, but sending data at a rate your connection cannot maintain may lead to instability. If you want to preserve a particular resolution or frame rate, adjust deliberately: resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate work together, and one platform bitrate figure should not be treated as universal.

Check the local network path
Compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet
If the streaming computer uses Wi‑Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because it avoids some sources of local wireless instability. Ethernet cannot fix an ISP outage or YouTube-side issue, but it can help establish whether Wi‑Fi is contributing. Consider a replacement cable only if you are using Ethernet and have reason to suspect the cable is faulty.
Inspect network equipment and software
- Check that the router and modem remain connected and do not restart or lose service during the stream.
- Inspect the Ethernet cable and computer’s network adapter; check for adapter or driver problems.
- Look for VPN, security, or traffic-prioritization software that could be interfering. If you briefly disable security software solely to diagnose a suspected conflict, restore it afterward. If that test identifies the cause, OBS recommends adding an exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
Change one thing at a time and test again, so you can tell which change helped. A network fix is more likely to reduce repeat interruptions than simply increasing OBS’s retry count.

Use advanced network options cautiously
OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations, including TCP pacing, as well as dynamic bitrate adjustment. These are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to keep data flowing when the connection is constrained, but it does not repair the underlying link. Consider advanced options only when they fit your operating system and symptoms; first test a sustainable bitrate and a stable network path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the full setup before leaving it unattended
- Start a test stream before relying on the setup for a long broadcast. Use YouTube’s encoder and preflight guidance to check the connection and stream health.
- Watch the preview and health messages, and confirm that both audio and video are arriving as intended.
- Check that the stream is accessible through the intended watch page.
- If you record locally, confirm the archive file is growing. YouTube’s computer-streaming tips also recommend monitoring the broadcast and checking the local recording where one is used. YouTube live streaming tips for computer.
- If you operate a backup encoder, test the failover process before depending on it. YouTube’s guidance describes testing a backup by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable.
Plan for YouTube stream and archive behavior
Automatic reconnect, YouTube auto-start, and auto-stop address different things. Reconnect is OBS output recovery; auto-start and auto-stop govern whether the encoder can start or stop the YouTube stream. None makes the internet path resilient by itself.

YouTube’s encoder setup help says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be automatically archived in full. For a continuous channel, decide how you will handle event restarts and archive segmentation, and check YouTube’s current guidance before configuring the broadcast. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Choose the remedy that matches the failure
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | Recovering from a brief interruption when the connection returns | Does not repair the network or guarantee recovery from a sustained outage |
| Wired Ethernet | Testing whether Wi‑Fi instability is involved | Requires a wired path and does not control ISP or YouTube availability |
| Lower bitrate | Reducing outgoing data demand when upload capacity is insufficient | May reduce visual quality; settings still need testing |
| Backup encoder | Adding a failover option to a production setup | Requires extra setup and monitoring; not every creator needs redundant hardware |
