How to Prevent OBS from Dropping Frames on a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce dropped frames on a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify whether OBS is losing frames because the connection to YouTube is unstable or because the computer cannot render or encode fast enough. For network drops, use wired Ethernet, choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support with headroom, and check the route and YouTube stream health. For local overload, reduce GPU and scene workload. No single OBS setting guarantees uninterrupted streaming.

Diagnose what kind of frames you are losing

OBS uses “dropped frames” for a connection problem: the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself causes this type of drop. Its FAQ also explains that OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to the streaming service; OBS does not run an intermediate streaming server.

Do not confuse connection drops with local rendering or encoding overload. Those are separate performance problems, and the remedies differ.

What you observe Likely area to investigate first
OBS dropped-frame count rises, or connection status turns yellow or red Network stability, upload capacity, bitrate, or the route to YouTube
OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” or local output stutters without an increasing network dropped-frame count GPU/rendering capacity, encoder workload, or scene complexity
OBS counters look normal, but viewers report buffering Viewer devices, locations, and internet connections; do not assume the sender is dropping frames

Check OBS’s counters and connection status alongside YouTube’s stream health. A speed test can help establish upload capacity, but one result does not prove that the route will remain stable over a full day.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Leave upload headroom

Use the capacity that your streaming connection can sustain, not its advertised peak or a single best-case speed-test result. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of available upload bandwidth free beyond the total stream bitrate. These are setup heuristics, not guarantees; shared networks and changing route conditions can still affect a stream.

If other people or devices use the same connection, check performance under representative conditions. If the stream becomes unstable when the network is busy, lower the bitrate and observe whether the dropped-frame count improves.

Match the live bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube’s live encoder table is specific to the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are the retrieved H.264 entries for common formats:

Live ingest format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

For 1080p, YouTube also lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 30 fps, and 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended at 60 fps. Use YouTube’s full live encoder table for other combinations. These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that your connection can sustain a given bitrate. Do not substitute YouTube’s upload-video encoding recommendations for its live ingest values.

Use YouTube-compatible live encoder settings

YouTube’s live-specific guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. It transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and networks.

Before a long broadcast, test with movement and audio similar to the intended program. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and the event. Prioritize a stable source feed over increasing output settings without a clear need.

Work through network causes before replacing hardware

Use a wired connection

OBS recommends wired Ethernet because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Test your existing cable and network path first. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is relevant only if you need a wired link or have evidence the current cable is faulty; changing cable category will not fix ISP congestion, an ingest-route problem, or local encoding overload.

Isolate the failing part of the path

If drops continue, possible fault points include the modem or router, Ethernet cable, network card, switch, extender, or another device along the route. Check components systematically rather than assuming which one failed. If local diagnosis does not resolve the problem, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing hardware when the fault is uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try OBS connection options as diagnostics

  • Try another available stream server, lower the video bitrate, or test another streaming service to help determine whether the issue is route- or service-specific.
  • On Windows, you can test OBS’s Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options. OBS says some users report improvement; the options can also add troubleshooting detail to logs.
  • Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
  • Try IPv4 Only as a diagnostic. If it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
  • OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate during congestion rather than drop frames, but OBS labels it beta, warns that it does not fix the underlying cause, and notes that picture quality may fall.

Security software, VPNs, bundled network-prioritization utilities such as Lenovo Vantage or Killer NIC, and outdated network drivers can interfere with streaming. Test one suspected cause at a time. If you temporarily disable security protection for diagnosis, re-enable it afterward. Obtain network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

Reduce local rendering or encoding load only when the evidence points there

If OBS reports encoding overload, or local output stutters without rising network drops, investigate GPU and encoder workload rather than changing network settings at random. OBS’s encoding-performance guide identifies GPU overload or a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system as possible causes.

  1. Close other GPU-heavy applications and check whether the warning changes.
  2. If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync; lowering game graphics can also free resources.
  3. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator in cases where GPU overload is suspected.
  4. Reduce the output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up.
  5. Simplify high-cost scenes. Check high-resolution capture media, complex filters, many or large browser sources, and oversized scene collections.

Change one likely cause at a time and watch OBS’s performance indicators. That makes it easier to identify whether a change helped. Avoid buying a more powerful computer until the symptoms actually indicate a local capacity problem.

Plan for a 24/7 broadcast without assuming a setting guarantees uptime

A continuous stream is exposed for longer to intermittent network, power, device, software, and service failures. OBS and YouTube’s guidance supports using a reliable network, reserving upload capacity, testing a representative stream, and monitoring stream health and messages. It does not establish a universal uptime target, restart schedule, failover design, or guarantee for OBS and YouTube operating continuously.

When a problem recurs, note when it happens and compare OBS’s dropped-frame and performance indicators with YouTube’s stream health. That evidence helps separate network instability from local overload and supports a more useful conversation with your ISP or hardware support.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than diagnose OBS for a camera or live desktop feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home.
  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card (one free day per account).

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

For a do-it-yourself OBS broadcast, keep the troubleshooting steps above: a cloud loop of uploaded videos is a different setup, not a fix for OBS connection drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet always eliminate dropped frames?

No. Ethernet removes one possible source of instability, but faults or congestion elsewhere on the network path can still cause drops.

Can viewers’ buffering mean OBS is dropping frames?

Not necessarily. If OBS counters are normal, buffering may be on the viewer’s device, location, or connection.
