Prepare files for the playback tool you choose, then configure that tool’s outgoing feed to meet YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance. Test the complete playback-to-YouTube path before leaving it running.
Separate the video file from the live stream
A prerecorded file is the source being played. The live stream is the audio-video feed your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube’s live guidance specifies settings for that outgoing feed; it does not set a universal file container, export preset, playlist format, or looping method.
Choose a playback and encoder arrangement that can play your intended files continuously. Before exporting a batch, consult that software’s current documentation for accepted containers and codecs, playlist behavior, looping, and recovery. Those details vary by encoder and are not established by YouTube’s live-stream requirements.

Protocol and video codec
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 frames per second. Follow the settings supported by your encoder and selected stream configuration. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Set the outgoing resolution and frame rate to match what your playback and encoding setup can sustain. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; the respective minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. Bitrate requirements vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table for other combinations.
Your upload connection must sustain the encoder’s outgoing bitrate. Test upload capacity and leave enough headroom for a stable connection rather than setting a target that your connection can only occasionally reach.

Keyframes and audio
YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Configure these in the encoder’s output settings; they describe the stream sent to YouTube, not a required export recipe for every source file. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations
Latency
Choose a latency mode based on how quickly viewers need to see the live feed. YouTube notes that 4K/2160p streams cannot use its low-latency optimization and are set to normal latency. Do not select 4K on the assumption that every latency option remains available.

Configure the stream in YouTube
YouTube’s interface defaults to automatic resolution and frame-rate detection in Live Control Room. Manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Use the stream key for the encoder’s connection to YouTube, and handle it as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
YouTube distinguishes a stream—the incoming audio-video feed and its settings—from a broadcast, the viewer-facing event or video. Its API documentation describes one stream carrying a continuous 24/7 broadcast while a separate broadcast is started and completed on that same stream. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation

Test the entire loop before relying on it
- Check the playback setup. Load representative files into the chosen player or encoder and confirm that it can play them in the intended sequence and repeat them as needed. Use that product’s documentation for file compatibility and loop controls.
- Set the outgoing stream. Configure RTMPS where supported, a video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format that meet YouTube’s guidance and your encoder’s capabilities.
- Connect to YouTube. Enter the correct stream key in the encoder and confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room.
- Run a representative preflight test. Include audio and moving video similar to the planned stream. YouTube explicitly recommends testing with comparable audio and motion before going live.
- Check stream health and monitor the run. Confirm the incoming feed is healthy after connecting, then monitor it during operation. A successful initial connection does not establish that a particular encoder will loop or recover unattended.
Common problems to check
- YouTube does not receive a feed: verify the RTMPS endpoint and stream key in the encoder, then check that the encoder is actively sending.
- Stream health reports instability: compare the outgoing bitrate with the upload capacity you tested. Reduce the bitrate or output load if the connection cannot sustain it.
- The video or audio is missing or unsuitable: test the source playback and outgoing encoder settings separately, then repeat a full preflight with both audio and movement.
- The stream connects but the files do not repeat as intended: inspect the player’s playlist and loop settings and consult its documentation. YouTube’s ingestion guidance does not prescribe a loop procedure.
- The feed stops after a disconnect: check the selected encoder’s reconnection and recovery documentation. YouTube’s cited live-ingestion guidance does not establish unattended recovery behavior for a particular encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a playback computer running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
