To show an MKV recording as a scheduled YouTube Live event, send it through an encoder as a live video feed. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room, connect the encoder using the event’s stream URL and key, play the recording, check YouTube’s preview, and start the event. You do not necessarily need to convert MKV to MP4 first: that depends on whether your encoder can read the file’s container and audio and video codecs.
Choose between a live event and an ordinary video upload
Use an encoder-based live event if viewers should arrive at a scheduled live watch page and experience the stream as an event. Use a regular video upload if people should simply watch the recording on demand. YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions describe an encoder sending a live feed; its upload guidance recommends MP4 for ordinary video uploads. That upload recommendation does not establish that every live-encoder source file must be MP4.
YouTube’s instructions do not establish that every MKV file can be supplied directly to every encoder, nor that an MKV can be uploaded as a scheduled live event. Check the specific recording and encoder rather than assuming compatibility.
Prepare the MKV before scheduling
Inspect the file and test the encoder
- Confirm that the recording is the version you intend to broadcast, and inspect its video and audio tracks. Note the codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether the audio is present and in sync.
- Check whether your chosen encoder can open the MKV and read its tracks. If possible, test a short section that contains the same kind of movement and audio as the full recording.
- If the encoder reads the file correctly, you may be able to use it as the source without changing the container. If it does not, make a separate prepared copy in a format the encoder accepts; keep the original intact.
Remux or transcode?
A remux changes the container while copying the existing audio and video streams; it may be enough when the only problem is the MKV container. A transcode decodes and re-encodes one or more tracks, and is needed when the encoder cannot handle the codecs or other properties. Transcoding can affect image or audio quality and takes processing time, so avoid it when the encoder accepts the source as-is. The right choice depends on the file and encoder; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal MKV conversion command or guarantee that a remux will work.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a regular on-demand upload, YouTube’s recommended upload encoding specifies MP4. That is distinct from preparing a source for an encoder-based live feed.
Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel needs to be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. It states a minimum age of 16 to live stream.
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Select the encoder workflow so YouTube provides the stream connection details.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Use the details for this event. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Choose compatible output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. The recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. Select the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current settings guidance for that combination, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
- Start the encoder’s feed. Load the prepared recording as the encoder’s source and start sending it to YouTube. The encoder workflow sends a live feed; it is not the same as uploading the MKV file as a scheduled event.
- Check the incoming preview and stream health. Wait for YouTube to show the feed, then confirm that the intended picture and audio are present and monitor stream health messages. Start the event only after the preview looks right.
- Monitor the broadcast and local archive. Keep an eye on stream health while the recording plays. YouTube advises checking that a local archive file is growing during the event; verify the resulting file afterward as well.
Test before the event and plan for archiving
Run a test with movement and audio similar to the recording you will broadcast. Check that the encoder can read the source throughout, that the picture and sound remain in sync, and that YouTube’s preview and stream health are satisfactory. A brief test can reveal a file or settings problem before viewers arrive.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a local copy too, confirm that your encoder or recording setup is saving one and that the archive file is growing during the stream; do not rely on the YouTube archive as your only copy.
Optional: attach a trailer
If you want to promote the scheduled stream, YouTube supports uploading a trailer as a regular video and attaching it to the scheduled stream. The trailer is separate from the encoder feed and does not replace testing the recording itself.

Troubleshoot common MKV live-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder will not open the MKV | The encoder may not support the container or one of the file’s tracks. | Inspect the audio and video tracks. Try a remux if the issue is only the container; transcode only if the codecs or other properties need to change. Test the prepared copy before the event. |
| YouTube receives no feed | The encoder may not be sending, or the connection details may be wrong. | Confirm the selected event, stream URL, and stream key in the encoder, then restart its feed and wait for YouTube’s preview. |
| The preview has no sound or the wrong picture | The encoder may be using an unintended track or source. | Check the selected video and audio tracks in the encoder and verify them in the preview before starting the event. |
| The stream health reports problems | The output settings or upload connection may not be sustaining the feed. | Check codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. |
| The local archive is missing or incomplete | The encoder or recording setup may not be writing a local copy successfully. | Check during the event that the archive file is growing, then verify the saved file afterward. |
| The stream cannot be started from the channel | The channel may not meet YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements. | Check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the stated minimum age requirement. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should stay live from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot supports an uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at the quality provided, with one flat price per slot and no re-encode or quality tiers. It can loop videos and playlists and automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly option is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
