Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Estimate an MP4’s size from its duration and the combined average audio and video bitrate: bytes ≈ seconds × bits per second ÷ 8. Calculate each video using the bitrate you expect to encode at, then add the results. It is a planning estimate, not an exact file-size prediction.
Estimate file size in six steps
- Write down each video’s duration. Convert hours, minutes and seconds to seconds. For example, 10 minutes is 600 seconds.
- Choose the export class. Note the resolution, frame rate and whether the video is SDR or HDR. These affect the bitrate assumption you should use.
- Choose an average video bitrate. YouTube’s upload recommendations are useful reference points, but they do not guarantee what your encoder will produce. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
- Add the audio bitrate. Use the audio rate you intend to export. The calculation needs combined audio and video bitrate, not video bitrate alone.
- Calculate each file. Multiply duration in seconds by combined bits per second, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes.
- Add the estimates. Sum the individual file estimates for the playlist. If every video uses the same combined bitrate assumption, you can add the durations first and calculate once.
For an estimate in decimal units, divide bytes by 1,000,000 for MB or 1,000,000,000 for GB. For binary units, divide by 1,048,576 for MiB or 1,073,741,824 for GiB. State which units you use; MB and MiB are not interchangeable.
Choose a bitrate assumption
YouTube recommends MP4 as a container, H.264 video, and matching the frame rate used during recording. Its bitrate values are recommendations for upload encoding, not fixed file-size targets. Check the current official settings table before encoding, since recommendations may change.
| SDR export class | YouTube video bitrate reference |
|---|---|
| 720p, standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) | 5 Mbps |
| 720p, high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps) | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p, standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps) | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K, standard frame rates | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K, high frame rates | 53–68 Mbps |
The same YouTube guidance gives audio references of 384 kbps for stereo, 128 kbps for mono and 512 kbps for 5.1. Add the relevant audio rate to the video rate before calculating. HDR recommendations differ from SDR; use the current official table for an HDR export rather than applying the SDR figures above.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Worked example: 10 minutes at 1080p, 30 fps, SDR
Using YouTube’s 8 Mbps 1080p standard-frame-rate video reference and 384 kbps stereo audio reference gives a combined assumption of 8.384 Mbps, or 8,384,000 bits per second. For 600 seconds:
8,384,000 × 600 ÷ 8 = 628,800,000 bytes
That is about 629 MB in decimal units, or about 600 MiB in binary units. This is arithmetic based on the reference rates, not a measured encode or a promise that an exported file will have exactly that size.

Why the actual MP4 can differ
- Variable bitrate: YouTube recommends variable bitrate for its referenced H.264 upload settings. A target or reference rate does not mean every second uses precisely that rate.
- Scene complexity: In quality-targeted encoding, difficult scenes can receive more bits and easier scenes fewer. Motion and detail can therefore affect size even when duration and frame dimensions match. Google’s VP9 encoding recommendations describe this content-dependent allocation; they are VP9 guidance, not a replacement for YouTube’s H.264 upload recommendations.
- Audio and export choices: Audio bitrate contributes to the total. Resolution, frame rate and HDR class also change the suitable video bitrate assumption.
- Container details: The calculation does not account for every MP4 container, metadata or stream-overhead detail.
YouTube’s Data API treats video duration and the combined uploaded bitrate as separate properties, reinforcing why duration by itself cannot determine file size. For resumable uploads, the API’s content length is the byte size of the video file. See Videos | YouTube Data API and Resumable Uploads | YouTube Data API.
Plan storage for a mixed playlist
Estimate each clip separately when durations, resolutions, frame rates, HDR status, audio settings or encoding targets vary. Add the estimates only after calculating each file with its own assumptions; applying one 1080p30 rate to a mixed 4K, HDR or high-frame-rate playlist can skew the total.

If you need a cautious storage plan, calculate a lower and upper total using a plausible bitrate range for each export class. Keep the duration fixed while comparing the scenarios so the difference reflects bitrate assumptions. There is no universal safety margin that makes every estimate exact.
