Google and Netflix created a free Squid Game Red Light, Green Light Easter egg for the Season 2 promotion. When it was active, searching Google for Squid Game revealed a brown envelope marked with the series’ circle, triangle, and square symbols; selecting it opened a browser mini-game featuring Young-hee.
The promotion launched on December 16, 2024, ahead of Squid Game Season 2. It was not announced as a permanent Google feature, and its availability in 2026 is unconfirmed. If the envelope does not appear, Google may have retired the promotion or stopped serving it in your region.
What was Google’s Squid Game Easter egg?
The feature was a short Google Search mini-game created through a Netflix–Google promotional partnership. It adapted the first challenge from the series, Red Light, Green Light, rather than offering a full Squid Game video game.

How to launch the original Google game
- Open Google Search on a desktop or mobile browser.
- Search for Squid Game.
- Look near the bottom of the results page for a brown envelope or invitation-style card bearing the circle, triangle, and square symbols.
- Click or tap the card.
- Use the game overlay to begin Red Light, Green Light.
This was the original activation path. The envelope may no longer appear because the feature was a temporary promotion, not a guaranteed permanent Search function.
Controls and rules
The mini-game uses two simple on-screen controls:
- Circle or O: Move the player characters forward while Young-hee is facing away.
- X: Stop when Young-hee turns around.
Your objective is to reach the finish line without moving during Red Light. Advance during Green Light, then stop before Young-hee faces the players. Any character still moving when Red Light begins is eliminated. If everyone is eliminated, the round can generally be restarted.

Successful runs were reported to end with a celebratory result, including confetti. The Google version softened the show’s violence: characters disappeared or lost the round rather than being graphically killed. Reports differed on the exact number of player characters, so player count is not a reliable way to identify the game.

Does it work on mobile and desktop?
When the Easter egg was active, coverage reported that it worked in both desktop and mobile browsers. That does not mean it remains available on either platform today. In 2026, the main issue is likely whether Google still serves the promotional card at all, rather than whether your phone or computer supports the controls.

Why the envelope may not appear
Try these checks, but understand that none can restore a promotion Google has retired:
- Search the exact phrase Squid Game instead of a longer question.
- Use Google Search directly rather than another search engine.
- Try both a mobile browser and a desktop browser.
- Open a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable aggressive script-blocking or content-blocking extensions.
- Refresh the results page or try another browser.
- Check whether your search is being redirected to a region-specific Google domain.
There is no authoritative evidence that changing location, using a VPN, or clearing cookies will reliably bring back the official game. The feature may simply have ended or may not be served in your region.

If the card appears but will not open
A blocked JavaScript request, stale Search page, mobile rendering problem, or partially loaded promotional asset can prevent the overlay from opening. Reload the page, try another browser, and temporarily check whether extensions are blocking scripts.
Be cautious if a page asks you to install an extension, APK, or unknown program. The original Google Search version did not require any separate installation.

As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.
Official Google feature versus unofficial alternatives
The original feature should open from Google Search after the Squid Game query and use the Search-page interface. Search results may also lead to independent recreations, videos, fan-made games, or franchise products. These are not the same thing as Google’s Easter egg.
For example, elgooG hosts a third-party recreation. It may reproduce the basic mechanic, but it is not operated by Google, and its availability, safety, and authorization should not be assumed.
Netflix’s Squid Game: Unleashed is another separate option. It is a larger multiplayer game inspired by the franchise, not the small Google Search Easter egg. Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality-competition television series, not an interactive browser game.

Netflix’s explanation of the show’s rules says contestants may move after Young-hee calls “Green light” and must stop at “Red light”; movement detected afterward results in elimination. The Google version borrows that central idea but is much shorter, safer, and less detailed. See Netflix Tudum’s explanation of the games for the series context.
The bottom line
Search Google for Squid Game and look for the brown envelope if you want to test the original Red Light, Green Light Easter egg. It launched as a December 2024 Netflix Season 2 promotion, but permanent availability was never guaranteed and current official availability is unconfirmed. If the envelope is missing, do not assume your search is wrong—and do not mistake a third-party recreation for Google’s original game.
