The right way to keep sound playing without a black screen depends on the device. On an iPhone, Apple’s built-in Background Sounds can play ambient audio after you lock the phone. YouTube and YouTube Music background playback on mobile requires a qualifying YouTube Premium account. For a TV, Roku TVs have a feature that turns off the picture while audio continues. Choose the path that matches your device and audio source.
On iPhone: play built-in nature sounds after locking the phone
If you want rain, ocean waves, or another ambient sound—not a particular track or streaming catalogue—try Apple’s Background Sounds first. The selected sound file downloads to the iPhone, so playback does not depend on streaming that sound from a video. Apple’s current iPhone guide documents the feature in iOS 26: Play background sounds on iPhone.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds.
- Turn on Background Sounds, choose a sound, and adjust its volume.
- Find the lock-screen playback setting and choose whether sounds stop when the iPhone is locked. Leave them playing when locked if you want audio to continue with the screen off.
- To stop playback automatically, set the available timer. You can also add Background Sounds to Control Center for quicker access.
- Test the selected sound by locking the phone before relying on it overnight.
Menu wording and placement can change with iOS updates. If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for “Background Sounds.”
On a phone: keep YouTube or YouTube Music playing with the screen off
For a specific YouTube video, music track, or podcast, use the official mobile app and sign in to the account with a qualifying YouTube Premium membership. YouTube’s help documentation says background play in its mobile apps requires Premium; YouTube Music Help specifically describes playback while using other apps or with the screen off. - Open YouTube or YouTube Music and sign in to the account with the membership.
- Start the music, podcast, or other audio you want to hear.
- Lock the phone or switch to another app. If playback stops, confirm you are signed in to the right account and that background playback is available in your region and app.
- Use the app’s playback controls or a system timer when you want audio to stop automatically.
These instructions concern playback from YouTube’s mobile apps. They do not establish that every account, country, device, or plan has identical controls, and they do not imply that a browser or another app will behave the same way.
On a Roku TV: turn off the picture while audio continues
If you mean “keep the sound on, but make the television picture go dark,” Roku documents a screen-off listening feature for Roku TVs. It can keep audio playing from supported streaming apps, including YouTube and Spotify. This is a Roku TV feature; do not assume it is available on every TV, Roku player, or other streaming device. Start the audio in a supported app, then use the screen-off control or voice instruction described in Roku’s support article. Menu names and controls can differ by TV model and software version, so check the instructions displayed for your device if the documented route does not match what you see.
Spotify and Calm: what happens to visuals and timers
Spotify video podcasts and Canvas
Spotify says video podcast visuals play only while the app is on screen; after you navigate away or lock the device, only the audio plays. Canvas visuals also do not continue in the background, and Spotify provides a setting to disable Canvas. These statements apply to the video podcast and Canvas behavior described in Spotify’s Internet and data usage guidance; they should not be generalized to every app or Spotify surface.

Calm sleep audio
Calm documents sleep audio such as music, guided meditations, Sleep Stories, and Scene sounds, along with playlist timers and screen-off listening. Its help article distinguishes a playlist sleep timer from the “Play sounds outside the app” setting, which controls how long a Scene sound continues after a meditation or Sleep Story ends. Set the control that matches the audio you started, and consult Calm’s sleep timers and playlists guide for its current steps.

For bedtime: set a stopping point and test first
If you want sound only while falling asleep, set a timer in the app or the phone’s available timer controls before putting the device away. For Calm Scene sounds, distinguish the “Play sounds outside the app” duration from a playlist timer. Then lock the phone and confirm that the chosen source continues as intended. Power-saving behavior and app settings can affect playback, so do not assume every source will behave identically.
