To stream recorded lessons from a folder as one continuous YouTube Live broadcast, put the filenames in the order you want in an FFmpeg concat manifest, then send the resulting stream to the ingest URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg does not automatically scan and alphabetize a directory in this workflow. This creates a live broadcast from prerecorded files; it does not upload each lesson as a separate YouTube video.
Decide what “alphabetical” means for your filenames before you build the manifest. In particular, choose whether numeric labels should sort lexically (so “Lesson 10” may come before “Lesson 2”) or in natural numeric order. The manifest’s line order controls playback, so check that order yourself.
1. Check your files and choose the playback order
The concat demuxer can join compatible media by reading inputs in the order listed in a text file. It expects the files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases; matching filename extensions alone do not establish compatibility. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg FAQ.
Choose a sort convention
Write down the intended sequence before creating the manifest. For simple numbered lessons, zero-padded names such as Lesson 01.mp4, Lesson 02.mp4, and Lesson 10.mp4 make lexical order more predictable. If your existing filenames use inconsistent numbering or labels, list them manually in the sequence you want rather than relying on a shell’s default sort.

Check stream compatibility
Inspect the video and audio streams in representative files before building the full broadcast. Compare stream layout, codecs, and time bases; an FFmpeg build’s ffprobe utility can report this information. If files differ, packet-level concatenation may fail or behave unexpectedly. Prepare compatible files or use the concat filter when you need to re-encode; the filter is designed for cases where inputs require re-encoding. Re-encoding takes processing time and can affect quality, so test the prepared output before streaming.
2. Create an ordered concat manifest
For the simplest example, put lessons.ffconcat next to the lesson files, or adjust the paths to match your directory layout. Keep the manifest outside the media directory if you plan to generate it from a file listing, so the manifest itself is not mistaken for lesson media.

file 'Lesson 10.mp4'The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition. Add one file directive per lesson, in the exact order you want played. The names above are examples; replace them with the actual filenames.
Paths, spaces, and safety
Run FFmpeg from the directory that contains both the manifest and referenced files, or use paths that resolve correctly from your working directory. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping according to the concat demuxer’s syntax. The demuxer rejects unsafe paths by default; keep the default safety behavior with -safe 1 rather than casually disabling it with -safe 0. Review the FFmpeg documentation if your paths are more complex than these simple examples.

3. Set up the YouTube Live broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one, then open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS; copy the actual RTMPS URL from your Live Control Room rather than guessing or substituting a URL.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or shared command transcript. Anyone with the key may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output using the copied endpoint and key. The following is a template, not a complete encoder configuration; replace the placeholders and select video and audio settings appropriate for your files and connection:

-f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"This illustrative command uses H.264, AAC, 30 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. The 5 Mbps video bitrate is YouTube Help’s recommendation for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps; it is not a universal rate for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Use your actual RTMPS URL and key, and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and options.
Match encoder settings to the stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not more than four seconds, along with square pixels, progressive scan, and SDR Rec. 709. These are YouTube recommendations; support for a codec or option depends on the FFmpeg build and your chosen output setup. Consult YouTube Help’s live encoder settings for bitrate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p and 60 fps, distinct from its 1080p/30 recommendation.

Choose a bitrate that suits the intended resolution and frame rate and leaves room within your upload capacity. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test with representative lesson footage and audio rather than assuming that a nominal internet speed guarantees a stable stream. YouTube explains that RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL.

- Make a short private or unlisted test broadcast using representative lesson audio and motion. Confirm the manifest plays in the intended order and the image and sound are present.
- In Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health before running the full lesson sequence. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- If you scheduled the stream, wait for the preview to appear, then click Go live in Live Control Room. Sending data from FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make a scheduled broadcast public.
- Monitor the broadcast as it runs. If you need a YouTube replay, note that YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not promise an archive for streams lasting longer.

5. Troubleshoot common failures
- Lessons play in the wrong order: FFmpeg follows manifest order, not a directory’s alphabetical listing. Edit the
filelines and verify the complete sequence, especially around numbers such as 2 and 10. - FFmpeg rejects a file or output becomes unreliable at a transition: Check that inputs have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. A common extension does not prove compatibility. Prepare consistent inputs or use the concat filter for a re-encoding workflow.
- A filename with spaces or punctuation is not found: Check the working directory and path spelling, then use concat-demuxer quoting or escaping rules. Avoid disabling safe-path checks just to suppress an error.
- YouTube does not receive the broadcast: Recheck that the URL and stream key came from the correct Live Control Room stream and were copied accurately. Use the provided RTMPS endpoint where available; never post the key publicly.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Test upload capacity, lower the selected bitrate or output resolution if necessary, and verify the encoder is using the intended frame rate, keyframe interval, and CBR settings. Use YouTube’s guidance for the target codec and resolution rather than a rate chosen for a different setup.
- A scheduled broadcast is not public yet: Check for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when it is ready.
