Keep OBS and the computer running for the broadcast to continue; looping the playlist does not restart OBS or recover a stream after a crash.
1. Get the YouTube stream URL and key

In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.

For an immediate broadcast, use the Stream tab. To prepare a scheduled broadcast, go to Manage > Schedule stream and configure it.

Copy the YouTube Stream URL and Stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as being like your stream’s “password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. A channel owner or manager can reset a key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide and encoder setup instructions.

2. Enter the key in OBS

In OBS, open Settings > Stream.

If the Service menu offers YouTube, select it and enter the stream key. If it does not, configure the YouTube stream URL as the server and paste the key into the Stream Key field.

Click Apply, then OK. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording, or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
3. Build and loop the playlist
For several videos: VLC Video Source

Install VLC. The OBS VLC Video Source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents this dependency in its Media Sources guide.

In the OBS scene that will be streamed, add a VLC Video Source, then add the video files to its playlist.

Enable Loop Playlist so the list starts again when it reaches the end.

Check that the source remains visible in the active scene. OBS lists Stop when not visible, restart when visible as the VLC source’s default behavior, so hiding it during a scene change can stop playback and restart it when it becomes visible again.
For one video: Media Source

Add a regular Media Source to the scene and select the file.

Turn on its Loop property. This repeats that one file; use VLC Video Source when you need a multi-file playlist.

4. Set output quality and check the broadcast
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 among the supported audio codecs.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed to and through Google’s servers.

Lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose a latency setting based on whether live audience interaction matters.

Before relying on the broadcast, test it and check the YouTube preview, stream health, audio, and picture. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend using a quality your connection can support reliably.
5. Start the stream and confirm it is live

In OBS, click Start Streaming.

For an immediate broadcast, check Live Control Room to confirm the incoming stream and its health.

For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live unless auto-start is configured. Connecting OBS does not necessarily publish the scheduled broadcast by itself.
What “always-on” means with OBS
The playlist loop repeats the media; it does not keep the computer powered, relaunch OBS after a crash, restore an internet connection, or reconnect to YouTube. If you rely on a DIY setup, the computer, OBS, and a stable upload connection must remain available. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish an archive guarantee for longer uninterrupted broadcasts. If an archive matters, plan and test how you will end or segment the stream. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Common problems and fixes

OBS connects, but the scheduled broadcast is not public: check Live Control Room for the preview and click Go live unless auto-start is enabled.

OBS cannot connect: verify the selected service or server URL and stream key against the values in YouTube Studio. If the key was reset, update OBS with the replacement.

The VLC source is missing or unavailable: install VLC, matching the OBS architecture; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.

The playlist stops or does not repeat: confirm Loop Playlist is enabled and the VLC source is visible in the active scene. For a single file, use the Media Source’s Loop property instead.

The picture or audio buffers, drops, or looks unstable: check YouTube’s stream health and lower output quality or bitrate to a level the upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate.

The stream ends after a power or software failure: a looping source does not provide automatic recovery. Restart OBS and the broadcast manually, then confirm the stream in Live Control Room.
