Run your encoder as a foreground system service, then configure systemd with Restart=on-failure and enable the service at boot. This lets systemd relaunch the encoder after qualifying failures and start it again after a host reboot. It does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, so monitor the service and YouTube’s live-stream health separately.
Use a system service that tracks the encoder
The unit below is a pattern, not a ready-to-run encoder command. The audio source, encoder build, credentials, Linux distribution and systemd version are unspecified, so substitute the executable and arguments for your setup. Keep the encoder in the foreground: systemd must be able to track the process it starts as the service’s main process.

User=to an account that exists on the host and has access to the audio input and any files it needs. - Set
WorkingDirectory=to the directory the encoder expects, or change it to your deployment’s actual working directory. Wants=network-online.targetandAfter=network-online.targetexpress a startup ordering dependency; they do not guarantee that YouTube is reachable or that the stream will connect.- Do not put credentials in a unit file that is broadly readable. Use a permissions-controlled configuration method supported by your distribution and encoder; the correct credential syntax depends on those specifics.
Check directive availability and spelling against the systemd manual installed on the target host, particularly if the distribution ships an older version.
Install, enable and inspect the service

Choose the restart policy for the encoder’s exit behavior

Both policies are subject to systemd’s start-rate limiting. Neither policy undoes an explicit administrative systemctl stop; stopping the service intentionally does not trigger an automatic restart.
Control retry timing and repeated failures
RestartSec=5s sets a five-second delay before an automatic restart in this example. The appropriate delay depends on how the encoder and its dependencies recover. Systemd also limits repeated starts through StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst=; those controls prevent an unbounded rapid restart loop. Choose values for the failure modes you expect rather than copying arbitrary limits into a production unit.

If repeated failures have exhausted the start-rate limit, inspect the logs and correct the underlying fault first. Then clear the failed state and start the service again:

A service shown as active only tells you that systemd considers its tracked process active. The process could still be alive while its audio input stalls, its connection is unusable, or YouTube rejects or loses the feed.

- For local process failures: use
systemctl status youtube-music-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-music-stream.serviceto check the service state and encoder messages. - For ingest and platform-side condition: check YouTube’s live control and stream-health feedback. Test before going live and monitor health messages during the event.
These checks answer different questions: systemd supervises the local process; YouTube’s feedback indicates whether the platform is receiving and reporting the stream as expected.

Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and keyframe settings for the encoder you actually use and the upstream bandwidth available to it. YouTube’s live encoder guidance provides options and recommended ranges, but no single bitrate or resolution is universal for every music stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP for live ingestion.
Test the complete path before a live stream and keep an eye on YouTube’s health feedback while it runs. A systemd restart can recover a process that exits; it cannot correct incompatible encoder settings, a stalled source or an ingest problem by itself.
Common problems and what to check

Protect music rights and check YouTube’s policies
Before streaming music, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the recordings and other material you use. A service manager cannot determine whether content is authorized or whether a stream complies with YouTube’s rules.
