Monitor a 24/7 YouTube stream in three places: OBS for encoder and frame symptoms, your computer’s CPU monitor for overall and per-process load, and YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages. None is a substitute for the others: a low CPU reading does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, and a healthy ingest indicator does not show whether the computer is under strain.
What each monitor tells you
| View | What it helps you check | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OBS status area and Stats | Local CPU and frame-related performance symptoms, plus additional performance indicators in View > Stats. The OBS community status guide describes CPU usage, preview frame rate, and dropped frames in the status area by default. [OBS status guide] | Whether YouTube is receiving the stream cleanly. OBS describes dropped frames as encoded frames sent over the network that do not reach the destination. |
| Operating-system CPU monitor | Whether CPU activity is rising and which processes may be using resources. macOS Activity Monitor also shows activity over time and System, User, and Idle shares. [Apple Support] | Whether frames are being delivered properly to YouTube. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Stream health and platform status messages, including instructions when YouTube reports a problem. [YouTube Help] | The computer’s total CPU load or which local process is consuming it. |
OBS workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so there is no universally safe CPU percentage to use as an alarm. A computer that meets general requirements is not thereby guaranteed to handle every stream setup. [OBS system requirements]
Set up a baseline before the long broadcast
- Use representative content. Test with the movement, scene changes, overlays, and audio your stream will actually use. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking representative audio and video. [YouTube Help]
- Open OBS’s performance view. Keep the status indicators visible and open View > Stats for additional indicators. Menu labels and layout can vary by OBS version; the cited status guidance is a community resource rather than a versioned manual. [OBS status guide]
- Open the operating-system CPU monitor. On macOS, open Activity Monitor and select CPU to see processor activity over time and System, User, and Idle shares. For current activity, choose Window > CPU Usage; for recent activity, choose Window > CPU History. [Apple Support]
- Check the YouTube preview and health. In Live Control Room, verify the preview and inspect stream health and status messages. YouTube recommends monitoring health and reviewing messages during the event. [YouTube Help]
- Record the conditions. Note the scene, encoder, resolution, and frame rate alongside the normal OBS and OS readings. This gives you a meaningful baseline for comparison if load later changes.
Monitor while the stream is live
- Check OBS’s CPU and frame-related indicators and open View > Stats when you need more detail.
- Look at the operating-system monitor if OBS performance changes or becomes unstable. Identify which process is consuming resources and compare the load with your baseline.
- Check Live Control Room for YouTube stream health and any status messages. A normal CPU reading cannot rule out an ingest or network problem; those are different parts of the streaming path.
- When performance degrades, compare the current workload with the baseline and look for resource-heavy applications or unnecessary work. OBS troubleshooting recommends considering other resource-heavy applications when performance is affected. [OBS troubleshooting]
For network planning, do not mistake YouTube’s bandwidth guidance for a CPU target: YouTube says total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth as headroom. [YouTube Help: encoder settings]
What a CPU reading can—and cannot—tell you
- CPU rises and OBS performance worsens: check which process is using resources and whether the streaming workload differs from your baseline. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity can all affect demand.
- CPU looks normal but YouTube reports a problem: use Live Control Room’s health details and messages; a local CPU monitor does not measure stream delivery.
- OBS reports dropped frames: do not treat this as a CPU percentage. OBS describes dropped frames as encoded frames sent over the network that fail to reach the destination, so check YouTube health and the network path as well.
- Do not apply a universal threshold. The appropriate load depends on the particular machine and stream configuration; the cited OBS guidance does not establish a single safe percentage.
macOS, Windows, and Linux notes
macOS
Activity Monitor’s CPU view shows processor activity over time and System, User, and Idle percentages. Use Window > CPU Usage for current activity or Window > CPU History for recent activity. [Apple Support]

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Windows and Linux
The available platform documentation here does not verify current exact navigation steps for Windows Task Manager or a Linux CPU monitor. Use your installed system monitor to inspect total and process-level CPU activity, but check documentation for your specific Windows version or Linux desktop environment rather than assuming one menu path applies everywhere.
Plan for a stream described as 24/7
CPU monitoring helps you spot local performance changes; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Also plan for YouTube’s archive behavior: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A nominal 24/7 stream therefore should not be assumed to produce one archive containing the full day. [YouTube Help: encoder streaming]
