Monitor a continuous YouTube broadcast at three separate points: the upstream encoder or AWS Elemental MediaLive, AWS Elemental MediaPackage in Amazon CloudWatch, and the audience-facing stream in YouTube Live Control Room. No single dashboard proves the whole path is healthy. Use metric alarms and an attended incident process for detection; treat MediaPackage events, access logs, and manifest headers as supporting evidence.
What each monitoring layer tells you
A typical path is encoder or MediaLive → MediaPackage → YouTube. The exact topology varies, so start with the systems actually in your workflow. Infrastructure signals show whether content is being produced and delivered through the origin; YouTube’s health indicator shows whether YouTube is receiving a usable stream. Audience analytics describe activity on YouTube, not the health of MediaPackage.

Check the upstream encoder or MediaLive
If MediaLive is the source
Open the MediaLive channel’s monitoring view and inspect its state, Health tab, pipeline details, active alerts, and destination information. Channel configuration determines whether one or two pipelines are present. The console shows active alerts and when they clear. If MediaPackage input activity falls or an input quality signal changes, check this upstream layer first. See AWS Elemental MediaLive monitoring.
If another encoder sends the stream
Check that encoder’s output status and destination configuration instead. Do not assume MediaLive is part of the workflow. For YouTube-bound encoder streams, YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video quality during the event. If you have a backup encoder, test its failover and verify that the event is accessible through channel and watch pages and on a mobile device. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Monitor MediaPackage in CloudWatch
Scope metrics to the relevant stream
In Amazon CloudWatch, open the AWS/MediaPackage namespace and select dimensions that identify the relevant channel and endpoint. AWS documents dimensions that include channel, ingest endpoint, origin endpoint, request type, status code, and track type. Available metrics and dimensions vary by MediaPackage version, so verify the exact names in your deployment before building dashboards or alarms. AWS says live metrics publish every minute or sooner; this cadence is not a frame-by-frame or instantaneous guarantee. See AWS MediaPackage CloudWatch metrics.
Signals worth watching
- Whether input is active.
- Whether output requests and bytes continue.
- Whether request response times change.
- Whether 4xx or 5xx responses rise.
- Whether supported input or output quality scores change.
Compare a particular channel or endpoint over the same time interval rather than relying only on account-wide aggregates. CloudWatch statistics for these metrics are retained for 15 months, according to AWS documentation; this is not a statement about YouTube analytics retention.

Set alarms to your service objectives
Create CloudWatch alarms for metrics that represent failure or degradation for your stream, then route notifications to an attended incident process. Choose thresholds and evaluation periods from your service objectives and observed normal behavior. AWS documentation does not prescribe universal thresholds for every 24/7 broadcast, so a generic number could create missed incidents or noisy alerts.
Check the YouTube destination separately
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream health indicator and its status messages alongside real-time stream analytics. YouTube identifies possible analytics such as concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration; the exact set depends on stream type and interface. YouTube displays stream errors beside the Health Indicator with timestamps. Its guidance characterizes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Use the messages and timestamps to correlate destination symptoms with upstream and MediaPackage data. See YouTube live streaming errors. YouTube’s encoder guidance also says, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages”; see YouTube encoder settings.
Add events, logs, and manifest evidence
MediaPackage events can add useful event-driven context. Route relevant events to an AWS target such as Amazon SNS or AWS Lambda, but do not use events as your only detection path: AWS says MediaPackage emits them on a best-effort basis. Access logs can help investigate requests. Manifest update response headers can help diagnose stale manifests in workflows where that feature applies. These are diagnostic clues, not substitutes for checking current input, output, and destination health. AWS’s logging and monitoring documentation describes the available monitoring approaches.

- YouTube reports unhealthy input: inspect the encoder or MediaLive pipeline first, then confirm MediaPackage input activity and quality metrics.
- MediaPackage input is active, but output requests fail or slow: inspect endpoint metrics by request dimensions and status code, then use logs to examine the affected requests.
- MediaPackage output appears normal, but YouTube reports errors or viewers cannot access the event: investigate the destination handoff and YouTube status messages. Confirm the event is reachable from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Dashboards disagree: preserve timestamps and compare the same interval, endpoint, and stream. Metric publishing cadence and platform health checks need not be identical.
- An alert fires outside staffed hours: follow the escalation runbook and response coverage defined for the broadcast. The necessary response-time objective and staffing model depend on your service targets and operating arrangements.
Build a 24/7 monitoring and response plan
- Keep dashboards and alarms scoped to the relevant channel, ingest endpoint, origin endpoint, and request or status dimensions where available.
- Document which person or team receives each alert, how incidents are escalated, and how to verify recovery across the source, MediaPackage, and YouTube.
- Record incident timestamps and the corresponding stream or endpoint identifiers so evidence from separate systems can be compared.
- Test encoder or pipeline failover and destination access before relying on them during an incident.
- Set thresholds, evaluation periods, and response coverage to the broadcast’s service objectives and normal operating behavior.
