A DigitalOcean Droplet can send a YouTube stream continuously, but the monthly transfer allowance is not a fixed quota attached only to that one Droplet. Each Droplet contributes an allowance to a pool shared by the team; outbound traffic beyond the pool is billed at $0.01 per GiB. A 10 Mbps stream running nonstop for 30 days uses about 3,018 GiB of video payload before overhead and other traffic, so check the team’s combined allowance and projected usage—not just the streaming Droplet’s plan.
What DigitalOcean’s bandwidth limits mean
DigitalOcean has two different network figures that are easy to confuse: a monthly outbound transfer allowance and an instantaneous throughput ceiling. The allowance determines how much outbound data the team’s Droplets can send before overage charges apply. Throughput is a rate limit on how fast traffic can move at a given moment; it is not a monthly data quota.
Monthly transfer allowance is pooled
Each Droplet plan contributes a specified outbound transfer allowance to a shared team pool. Current DigitalOcean pricing lists allowances starting at 500 GiB per month; the listed 1 GiB Basic Droplet includes 1,000 GiB per month. The plan chosen determines its contribution. A Droplet may use more than its individual contribution if other Droplets leave room in the team’s pool. See DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing for plan details.
Unused transfer does not roll over to the next month or transfer between teams. DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation describes the team-level pool and the $0.01 per GiB charge for Droplet outbound transfer above it. Rates, plans, and usage can change, so use the current pricing page and your team billing view when estimating an actual bill.

Throughput ceilings are separate
DigitalOcean documents maximum network rates of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets, 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets, and 10 Gbps over public connections for GPU Droplets (25 Gbps over VPC). Traffic above applicable throughput limits may be rate limited. These are maximum rates, not allowances for how many GiB you may send in a month. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits.
What counts toward the team pool
- Data sent over a Droplet’s public network interface counts toward the team’s outbound transfer pool. IPv6 traffic also uses the public interface.
- Traffic between Droplets using the private VPC interface is not public-interface egress.
- Inbound transfer to Droplets is free.
- For an ordinary encoder-to-YouTube ingest setup, the Droplet sends the stream outward to YouTube. This is distinct from YouTube delivering the stream to viewers.
For continuous-stream budgeting, include any other public outbound traffic from every Droplet in the team, not only the video payload from the encoder.

Estimate monthly transfer for a continuous stream
Use bitrate and streaming time
Estimate video payload with this calculation:
outbound GiB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,073,741,824
At continuous operation for 30 days, 1 Mbps is about 302 GiB and 10 Mbps is about 3,018 GiB. This is arithmetic using decimal Mbps and binary GiB, not a DigitalOcean guarantee. Actual measured transfer can differ because of protocol overhead, stream settings, reconnects, backup encoders, and other workloads.

Use an appropriate YouTube bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance lists these reference bitrates:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. It also advises leaving 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. A primary and backup stream sent simultaneously both consume outbound capacity, so include both in the estimate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and network tips; YouTube says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”

Worked example: one 10 Mbps stream for 30 days
Suppose one Droplet sends a 10 Mbps H.264 stream without interruption for a 30-day month. The video payload is approximately 3,018 GiB, before protocol overhead, other Droplet traffic, or a backup feed. A 500 GiB allowance from one smallest Basic plan would not cover that payload on its own, but DigitalOcean bills against the team pool—not that single Droplet allowance in isolation.
For illustration only, if the entire team pool were 500 GiB and the stream were the only outbound usage, 2,518 GiB above the pool at $0.01 per GiB would amount to $25.18 in overage. This is a calculation, not a quoted bill: other Droplets’ allowances and usage, measured transfer, and billing details affect the actual result.

Can you run a YouTube stream 24/7 from a VPS?
Yes, provided the VPS workload, available outbound bandwidth, team transfer pool, and YouTube account eligibility support it. Calculate the transfer at the encoder’s actual bitrate for the planned hours, add concurrent backups and other egress, then compare projected team usage with the pool and check the Droplet’s throughput ceiling. Use the DigitalOcean billing view to review measured team usage and projections; its bandwidth view updates daily.
YouTube’s ability to accept a live stream is separate from DigitalOcean’s transfer allowance. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days for live streaming setup. Confirm eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Keep a YouTube channel live without a VPS running at home
For a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, support, and a free first day with no card. India-based users can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. There is no camera streaming, and StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. The first day is free with no card. Start the free StreamNeo day.
Diagnose a bandwidth-budget problem
- Projected transfer exceeds the pool: Recalculate from the configured bitrate and actual monthly hours, then add all other public egress and any simultaneous backup stream. Check the team’s total allowance rather than only the streaming Droplet’s contribution.
- The stream is unstable despite apparent monthly allowance: Check the instantaneous throughput ceiling and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Run a representative encoder test and watch YouTube stream health.
- The bill is higher than a video-only estimate: The estimate excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, backups, and other outbound workloads. Compare it with the daily-updated team bandwidth view.
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; this is separate from DigitalOcean bandwidth billing.
Plan the estimate around the whole team
Before choosing a Droplet for continuous streaming, record the plan’s included transfer, video resolution and frame rate, codec and bitrate, streaming hours in the billing cycle, other team Droplet egress, backup-stream capacity, current team pool and projected usage, overage rate, and the Droplet’s throughput ceiling. Test with representative audio and motion, leave upload headroom, and refine the estimate against measured team usage rather than treating a plan allowance as a standalone quota.
