How to Monitor Audio Levels on a 24/7 Birds-and-Forest YouTube Stream

Use OBS meters, periodic listening, and YouTube stream health together to check audio on a continuous birds-and-forest livestream.

In OBS, watch the audio meter for each intended source, listen to the signal both before and after it reaches OBS, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. These checks answer different questions: a moving meter confirms signal and shows peaks, listening tells you whether the ambience actually sounds right, and YouTube’s status helps assess delivery. None alone confirms all three.

Set up monitoring before you go live

Check the intended source in OBS

  1. Open OBS and locate the Audio Mixer. Keep the intended birds-and-forest audio source visible while you test it.
  2. Play the actual recording or source you plan to stream. Confirm that its meter moves. If the source is meant to be stereo, check that both channel meters move; OBS defaults to stereo, and a signal only on the first channel can leave viewers hearing that source on the left channel only unless you change routing or downmix it.
  3. Listen through the source device’s headphone or monitor output. Then listen again to the signal through OBS Audio Monitoring. Adjust at the source device first, then check the operating-system level and the OBS fader.
  4. Record a representative session in OBS and listen back before the broadcast. A source can show activity while still sounding wrong, unbalanced, or distorted.
  5. Test with audio and video similar to the planned stream, not silence or an unrelated clip. YouTube recommends testing before going live with content representative of the actual broadcast.

Use OBS meter references carefully

OBS’s technical guidance gives -20 dBFS as its meter alignment level and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum-level guidance. Those figures explain OBS’s meter references and safety margin; they are not a universal YouTube loudness target, nor a guarantee against every downstream audio problem. The Audio Mixer’s green, yellow, and red zones give a quick visual indication of level. Red is close to clipping, which can cause distortion. OBS’s general guide discusses speech and background music, so do not treat its color advice as a numeric target for quiet natural ambience.

Read the OBS meter while the stream runs

Signal and peak hold

The moving bar in OBS’s mixer is a peak meter: it shows peaks rather than perceived loudness. Its peak-hold marker retains the highest level for 20 seconds, making brief transients easier to spot. An absent input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS. That is a cue to investigate, not a diagnosis: the source might not be playing yet, or an audio interface or other device may be disconnected.

Peak is not the same as loudness

OBS’s technical explanation describes the main meter as a sample peak-program meter. A smaller VU-style indicator represents RMS integrated over 300 ms; OBS describes it as closer to sound pressure than a peak meter, but less useful than a proper loudness meter. Even similar-looking meter readings can sound different to viewers, so use your ears as well as the display.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For context, EBU Mode uses momentary loudness over 400 ms, short-term loudness over 3 seconds, and integrated loudness from start to stop. EBU R 128 recommends -23 LUFS ±0.2 LU, or ±1 LU for live programmes. Those are broadcast-standard figures, not a target established for YouTube birds-and-forest streams. The EBU’s streaming supplement says streaming services typically use target loudness levels higher than broadcast standards; it does not establish a YouTube-specific target for this kind of ambience. Avoid treating -23 LUFS as a YouTube requirement.

Monitor audio and delivery during a 24/7 broadcast

  1. Periodically confirm that the intended source meter continues to move. If its input indicator disappears, check that playback is running, the source is routed to the expected mixer channel, and any connected capture equipment or interface remains connected.
  2. Watch the peak-hold marker for unexpectedly high transients. If levels approach clipping or the sound distorts, reduce the level at the source first, then check the operating-system control and OBS fader.
  3. Listen periodically through a headphone or monitor output, checking both the source device and the signal after it reaches OBS. Listening catches audible faults a meter cannot establish; it is not unattended detection when nobody is listening.
  4. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends monitoring it during the event. A healthy delivery indication is not proof that the ambience is balanced, audible, or pleasant.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. These are encoder settings, not loudness targets. Match your configuration to YouTube’s current guidance and test the actual stream before relying on it.

Optional: add a loudness dock to OBS

The OBS Forums resource page lists Loudness Dock 0.5.1, which provides momentary, short-term, and integrated loudness readings, loudness range (LRA), and true peak for audio track 1. The page lists OBS Studio 28.0.0 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux as supported platforms; it reports an update dated 2026-02-03. Check the resource page for compatibility before installing. The listed features do not establish unattended silence or level alerts, so do not rely on this dock as a 24/7 fault-notification system.

Troubleshoot common monitoring problems

What you notice What it may mean What to check
The meter does not move or the input indicator is missing No audio is reaching OBS; the indicator alone does not identify why. Confirm the source is playing, check its routing to the expected mixer channel, and inspect connected audio devices or interfaces.
Only one stereo channel shows activity The source or routing may be supplying only one channel; viewers may hear it on the left only. Check source output and OBS routing. Change routing or downmix if appropriate for the source.
The meter moves, but the audio sounds distorted A visible signal does not rule out clipping or another audible fault. Listen at the source output and through OBS. Watch the peak-hold marker and reduce the source level first if peaks are too high.
The meter looks steady, but the stream sounds too quiet or wrong Peak readings do not fully describe perceived loudness or sound quality. Listen to a representative recording and to the actual signal after it reaches OBS; do not infer quality from meter movement alone.
OBS shows activity, but YouTube reports a stream-health issue The OBS meter measures the source reaching OBS, not delivery all the way to YouTube. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health view separately from OBS’s audio mixer.

What the monitoring setup cannot guarantee

The official guidance cited here does not specify an unattended alert method for prolonged silence or level faults on a continuous YouTube broadcast, and it does not set a YouTube-specific LUFS target for birds-and-forest ambience. A meter check, periodic listening, a representative recording, and YouTube stream health cover different parts of the workflow, but none should be presented as a guarantee of continuous audible output.
