Monitor both sides of the stream: supervise FFmpeg’s process and progress locally, then query YouTube’s Live Streaming API for ingest and health status. A process that is still running does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable stream. Combine both checks, preserve YouTube’s configuration-issue details, and use the monitor preview when you need to confirm picture and sound.
What a useful health check should detect
A reliable monitor separates local encoder problems from problems at YouTube. FFmpeg can exit, stall while still running, or continue sending output while YouTube reports an ingest or configuration problem. Each case needs a different alert and response.
| Signal | What it tells you | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exit status | The local process stopped, and its exit code may help explain why. | Whether YouTube had already received a healthy stream. |
| FFmpeg progress freshness | Whether FFmpeg is continuing to emit program-readable progress. | Whether YouTube is receiving or accepting the output. |
| YouTube API status and health | Whether YouTube reports incoming data and any health or configuration issues. | Whether viewers can hear and see the stream as intended. |
| YouTube monitor preview | A person can inspect the incoming picture and sound. | A continuously machine-readable substitute for the process and API checks. |
Build the monitor in two automated layers
1. Supervise FFmpeg and its progress
Start FFmpeg under a process supervisor or wrapper that records its exit code. Use FFmpeg’s -progress option to send program-friendly progress records to a pipe or another destination your monitor can read. Track when a new record arrives and pay attention to the emitted progress state. Keep FFmpeg’s diagnostic output on a separate log channel; a monitor based only on parsing human-oriented status lines is more fragile. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Alert separately when FFmpeg exits unexpectedly and when it remains alive but no new progress arrives for longer than your chosen threshold. The latter is evidence of a likely local encoder or input stall, not proof of the exact cause. FFmpeg documents a default -stats_period interval of 0.5 seconds for progress/statistics updates. That is an output cadence, not a universal alert timeout: choose a staleness threshold for your input, latency, and tolerance for delayed updates.

2. Query YouTube’s stream status and health
Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to inspect the stream bound to the broadcast. Collect status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus.status, and status.healthStatus.configurationIssues. They answer related but distinct questions: whether YouTube is receiving data, and whether YouTube reports health or configuration issues.
streamStatusdescribes whether YouTube is receiving data and whether the configured stream is ready, inactive, or in an error state.healthStatus.statuscan begood,ok,bad, ornoData.goodmeans there are no issues at warning severity or worse;okmeans there is no error-severity issue;badmeans one or more error-severity issues exist.noDatameans YouTube’s backend has no health information. Treat it as unknown or not yet reported, not as confirmation that the stream is healthy.- When configuration issues are present, retain each returned issue’s type, severity, reason, and description in the alert. Those details are more actionable than a generic “bad health” notification.
YouTube documents video ingestion starvation as insufficient video reaching the service to maintain smooth streaming, with buffering as a possible viewer symptom. Its configuration issue list also covers audio and video setting mismatches, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codecs, and primary or backup streams. Report the issue YouTube returns rather than trying to infer every root cause from FFmpeg’s local state alone. See the Live Streaming API stream resource documentation.

Interpret both signals together
- FFmpeg exited: investigate a local process failure. Use the exit code and FFmpeg’s diagnostic log; also check YouTube’s status to determine whether the stream had reached ingest.
- FFmpeg is alive, but progress is stale: report a probable local encoder or input stall. Check the input, the process, and its logs.
- FFmpeg progress continues, but YouTube reports inactive, error, or bad health: investigate the output connection, stream configuration, and the specific issue details returned by YouTube.
- YouTube reports active and healthy, but viewers report a problem: inspect YouTube’s monitor preview and verify picture and sound manually. API ingest status is not a viewer-side quality check.
Keep polling interval, progress-staleness timeout, and alert hysteresis configurable. The appropriate values depend on the stream’s latency and reliability needs; the documented 0.5-second FFmpeg default does not prescribe them. The official guidance cited here does not establish a method-specific API quota cost or one recommended polling interval for every deployment.
Authorize API access and protect stream credentials
YouTube Live Streaming API methods require OAuth 2.0. Service-account flow is not supported for YouTube Live, so authorize with a YouTube user or channel that can access the relevant stream resource. Store access and refresh tokens in a protected credential store. Never put bearer tokens in query strings or expose them in logs or alerts. See the YouTube Live API authorization guidance.

Treat the stream key as a secret as well. For RTMP-family output, FFmpeg’s documented URL syntax includes server, port, application, and stream or playpath components. Avoid printing a fully expanded output URL into general-purpose logs or alerts, because it may reveal the key. See the FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.
Check RTMPS transport failures
If you send RTMPS output, verify that the URL uses the secure protocol, the valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, and port 443. The TLS connection also needs the correct hostname for SNI. YouTube associates SSL errors with an incorrect server name, port, or TLS setup; a timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an RTMPS endpoint. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guide for live streams. Its API documentation states: “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.”

Verify the incoming feed before relying on alerts
Before transitioning a broadcast to testing, YouTube’s documented workflow says to confirm that the bound live stream is active. YouTube also describes embedding a monitor stream so an operator can inspect the incoming feed. Use API fields for automation, and the preview for a human check of picture and sound; label alerts clearly so nobody mistakes an ingest-status check for a viewer-experience check. See the YouTube Life of a Broadcast guide.
Common monitoring failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is running, but no progress records arrive | The encoder or input may be stalled, or the monitor may not be reading the configured progress destination. | Confirm the -progress destination and reader are functioning; inspect the input and FFmpeg diagnostics. Apply your configured staleness threshold rather than treating process existence as health. |
The API returns noData |
YouTube has no health information to report yet. | Keep the state unknown, check streamStatus, and avoid sending a “healthy” alert solely on this value. |
| YouTube says inactive or reports an issue | The output may not be reaching ingest as expected, or stream settings may need attention. | Preserve and review the returned issue type, severity, reason, and description; verify the output connection and stream configuration. |
| RTMPS connection times out or reports an SSL error | The protocol, port, endpoint hostname, or TLS/SNI setup may be wrong. | Verify RTMPS, the valid ingestion endpoint, port 443, and matching hostname/SNI; do not send cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint. |
| API status looks healthy, but viewers report buffering or missing audio | Ingest status alone does not validate the viewer-side experience. | Open the monitor preview and check both picture and sound. Review any YouTube health issue details if present. |
