Monitor the stream in two places: use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed and to inspect stream health; use Azure Monitor to check the Azure VM and, if configured, its guest operating system and workload. A running VM does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

The two dashboards report different parts of the delivery path. Azure’s VM monitoring and YouTube’s stream-health reporting are documented separately; the cited guidance does not establish a built-in Azure Monitor connector that imports YouTube Live Control Room health. Treat a combined alert as a custom integration unless you verify one separately.
Set up Azure VM monitoring
Start with host metrics
Azure collects host-level VM metrics automatically. Use Azure Monitor to inspect signals such as CPU, network, and disk utilization, and to check whether the VM is available. These signals describe the Azure platform’s view of the VM; they are not a substitute for checking the stream at YouTube. See Microsoft’s Monitor Azure Virtual Machines.
Add guest and workload telemetry when needed
Host metrics may not show whether the guest operating system or a streaming process is healthy. For guest OS and workload performance, configure Azure Monitor Agent and a data collection rule (DCR). VM Insights or enhanced monitoring can simplify onboarding. Select signals that are actually collected before building alerts around them.

Microsoft’s enhanced monitoring tutorial directs operators through the VM’s Monitor experience: configure monitoring, choose metrics and workspaces, optionally enable recommended alert rules, then enable the configuration. Charts may take a few minutes to populate after setup. If they are initially empty, allow time for collection and check the agent and DCR configuration before concluding that setup failed.
Alert on Azure symptoms you can act on
Choose an alert type that matches the data behind the condition. Azure metric alerts evaluate numeric metrics; log search alerts evaluate collected log data. A VM availability alert or resource-pressure alert can help identify host problems. A service or process alert is useful only if that signal is being collected and you have chosen a threshold suited to the workload.

Microsoft’s recommended VM alert guidance is a starting baseline, not end-to-end stream monitoring: its recommended alerts are host-focused and provide limited visibility into the workload or application. Set thresholds against observed baselines and the needs of your stream; the cited guidance does not establish universal thresholds for an always-on YouTube broadcast.
Alert costs depend on factors such as rule type, dimensions, and evaluation frequency. There is no meaningful total cost without the VM size and region, workspace and data volume, retention, alert configuration, and other deployment details. Check YouTube’s incoming stream during the broadcast
Keep YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room available while the stream is running. Review stream status, health messages, and real-time analytics instead of inferring YouTube receipt from the VM’s running state. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide explains the status and analytics available there.
When an error appears, use its timestamp and severity to diagnose the event. YouTube’s live-stream error-message reference describes red errors as critical—they may prevent an event from starting or cause user problems—and yellow errors as moderate, potentially degrading quality. Read the message’s specific instructions rather than treating every warning as proof that the stream has stopped.

Validate the encoder and network path
Match encoder settings to the actual stream profile
Choose bitrate guidance for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations vary across those settings; there is no single bitrate that applies to every stream. Check the current table in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for the profile you are sending.
Test capacity and leave bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total planned stream bitrate. Confirm that the available outbound capacity can support the full stream with that margin; network disruption can break a stream.

Troubleshoot common monitoring symptoms
