How to Migrate a 24/7 Podcast Stream from OBS to FFmpeg Without Changing Its YouTube URL

Keep your YouTube broadcast in place, point FFmpeg at the existing ingestion settings, and verify the public watch page before retiring OBS.

To switch from OBS to FFmpeg without changing your YouTube live URL, keep the existing YouTube broadcast in place and configure FFmpeg to send video to the same YouTube ingestion URL and stream key. Then make a controlled encoder handoff and verify the existing public watch page in YouTube Studio and from a separate viewer session. YouTube documents the difference between an encoder’s reusable stream settings and an individual broadcast, but does not guarantee that a particular watch-page URL survives every disconnect or restart.

First, distinguish the stream key from the live URL

The stream key and ingestion URL are for the encoder sending video to YouTube. The public live URL is the viewer-facing page for a broadcast. They are related, but they are not the same setting: YouTube’s Live Streaming API models the encoder configuration as a liveStream resource and the viewer-facing event as a liveBroadcast resource. YouTube describes a stream as carrying audio-video content and defining how it is delivered; one stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times.

For this migration, keep the intended broadcast in place and use its existing ingestion settings. Do not create a new broadcast just to change encoders. Retaining the key is important, but it is not, by itself, a guarantee that the exact watch-page URL will remain valid through any interruption. Confirm the result against the specific broadcast in Live Control Room.

Record the working OBS and YouTube setup

Before stopping OBS, note the settings that define what viewers currently receive. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room, then identify the active broadcast and its public watch page. Open the stream settings and securely record the server or ingestion URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not paste it into public notes, screenshots, chat, or a published command.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Broadcast: Record which broadcast is active, its public URL, title, and privacy setting. If the stream is scheduled, note that too.
  • Ingestion: Record the selected protocol and the server URL. If YouTube provides primary and backup addresses, note which one OBS uses and whether a backup is configured.
  • Output: Record OBS’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval/GOP, audio sample rate, and channel layout. Use the current working output as the reference rather than assuming that a new encoder’s defaults will match.
  • Program content: List every OBS source and how it is mixed: for example, the podcast recording, looped visuals, music, microphone, or other audio. A single-file FFmpeg command will not reproduce an OBS scene or mixer unless those inputs and their mixing are recreated.
  • Recovery: Keep OBS available as a rollback option until FFmpeg has passed the checks below.

YouTube may load previous stream settings when a creator returns to the Stream tab. Still, verify the active broadcast and key before using them; do not assume a saved setting belongs to the broadcast you intend to preserve.

Prepare FFmpeg to match the existing output

Use the same source content and intended output behavior as OBS. The key migration decision is whether FFmpeg can pass through the existing audio and video codecs or needs to encode them. Stream copy avoids another generation of encoding, but it works only when the source codecs and container are compatible with the chosen YouTube ingestion path. If they are not, encode to formats YouTube accepts and set the output properties to match the working OBS stream.

Setting What to carry over or verify
Input and content Use the same podcast audio, video, and looping or mixing behavior. If OBS combines several sources, reproduce that combination in FFmpeg or another part of the setup.
Video codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate Match the established OBS output unless there is a deliberate reason to change it. Check YouTube’s incoming preview and health diagnostics after the switch.
Keyframe interval / GOP Match the intended GOP behavior. YouTube health diagnostics can flag an incorrect GOP or keyframe frequency.
Audio codec, sample rate, and channels Preserve the current audio format where compatible. YouTube diagnostics can identify sample-rate or channel-configuration problems.
Protocol and destination Use the protocol and ingestion address configured for the existing stream. YouTube documents RTMP (including RTMPS), HLS, and DASH ingestion; changing encoder does not require changing to HLS.
Primary and backup Keep the primary/backup configuration consistent with the YouTube settings. A mismatch can be reported as an ingestion health issue.

For a simple local recording that is already compatible with YouTube’s selected RTMP ingestion, this is a command shape to adapt. Replace the placeholders locally; never publish a real key:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "podcast.mp4" -c copy -f flv "RTMP_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

-re reads a file at its natural playback rate, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input. -c copy asks FFmpeg to pass through the existing audio and video rather than encode them again. This example is for a compatible file input, not a universal replacement for every OBS scene. If the media codecs cannot be carried in the selected output container, or if the current OBS program mixes multiple inputs, adapt the input and encode/mix settings before the handoff. YouTube’s API documentation notes that some encoders accept the URL and stream name separately while others expect them concatenated as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; use the form accepted by your FFmpeg output and the ingestion protocol selected in YouTube.

Switch encoders without creating a new broadcast

  1. Prepare FFmpeg while OBS is still available. Build and review the command or configuration with the recorded output settings and existing ingestion details. Keep the key private. Check that the input is present and that the command uses the intended protocol and destination.
  2. Keep the existing broadcast selected. In Live Control Room, confirm that you are working with the broadcast and watch page you intend to retain. Do not create a replacement broadcast as part of the encoder change.
  3. Make the handoff deliberately. When FFmpeg is ready, stop or disconnect OBS, then start FFmpeg against the same ingestion settings. Avoid having two encoders send competing output to the same stream at once.
  4. Check YouTube’s incoming signal. Wait for the FFmpeg signal and inspect the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. Confirm that audio and video are present and that the picture, sound, and playback behave as expected.
  5. Test the public page. Open the established watch-page URL in a separate viewer session. Check playback, title, and privacy. A healthy encoder connection alone does not prove that viewers are on the intended broadcast page.
  6. Keep the rollback option until validation is complete. If the signal or public page is wrong, stop FFmpeg, restore the known-working OBS path, and recheck the selected broadcast and ingestion settings before another attempt.

For scheduled streams, YouTube’s encoder setup flow separately instructs the operator to click Go live after the preview appears. Follow the status shown for the particular broadcast; receiving an encoder signal and making a scheduled broadcast public are separate steps.

What to expect from a 24/7 broadcast and its archive

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is relevant to a nominally continuous podcast channel: do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24/7 session will produce one archive. Confirm how the broadcast is configured and check the resulting archive behavior for your channel. YouTube’s API documentation gives a 24/7-feed example in which a separate interview broadcast is created while the continuous feed remains live; it does not establish a universal watch-page guarantee for every encoder restart.

Troubleshoot the handoff

  • FFmpeg connects, but the preview is black or silent: Check that FFmpeg is reading the intended input and that audio/video streams are present. If OBS combined multiple sources, confirm the FFmpeg setup reproduces those inputs and the mix.
  • YouTube reports an unsupported or missing codec: Check the source codecs and output container. Stream copy may be unsuitable for that input; configure a compatible encode rather than assuming -c copy will work.
  • YouTube flags GOP or keyframe frequency: Compare FFmpeg’s output GOP/keyframe behavior with the working OBS settings and correct the mismatch.
  • Video ingestion is intermittent or starved: Check that the input continues producing frames and that FFmpeg remains running. YouTube health diagnostics can report video ingestion starvation.
  • Primary/backup configuration errors appear: Compare the addresses and backup behavior configured in YouTube with the destination FFmpeg is actually using.
  • The encoder is live but viewers cannot use the old URL: Recheck the selected broadcast in Live Control Room and test its public page. The stream key identifies ingestion settings; it does not prove that the intended broadcast remains active or that its page survived a restart.
  • The preview is present but the scheduled stream is not public: Check the broadcast’s Live Control Room status and follow the scheduled-stream Go live step where applicable.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep pre-recorded podcast programming on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating OBS or FFmpeg yourself: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. This is a separate service, so verify the intended broadcast and public URL in YouTube rather than assuming an encoder change preserves a particular watch page.
