Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstagram cannot arbitrarily extend every music-library clip. You can make the Reel itself longer, move the song section with Instagram’s audio slider, or select another available track. If Instagram still offers only a short excerpt, the dependable solution is to edit legally usable music into the video before uploading it.
Instagram’s current Help Center says Reels can contain one or more clips totaling up to 20 minutes, although Reels longer than three minutes are not recommended to new audiences. Actual controls and limits can differ by device, account, region and app version.
First, identify what is actually too short
- The video is too short: the Reel and its audio stop together. Add more footage, photos or clips.
- The licensed song excerpt is capped: extending the video does not guarantee a longer section of that track.
- The song starts at the wrong point: move the song-position slider to choose a different passage.
- You want music throughout a long Reel: use a longer available Instagram excerpt or pre-mix legally usable audio in an external editor.
Instagram documents a control for selecting which part of a song plays. It does not document a universal button to loop or repeat a licensed track indefinitely. See Instagram’s music instructions.
Make the Reel itself longer in Instagram
- Open Instagram’s mobile app and start a new Reel.
- Record a clip or tap the option to add media from your phone.
- Select a longer source video, or add more clips and photos. Trim each clip as needed.
- Continue until the video reaches the length you need. Instagram’s Help Center currently describes a combined limit of up to 20 minutes, while noting that Reels over three minutes are not recommended to new audiences: official Reel creation guidance.
- Tap Audio, Music or the music-note icon. Labels and placement vary by app build.
- Search for the song and tap it to add it.
- Drag the waveform or song-position slider to select the available section.
- Preview the beginning and end. If audio-mix controls appear, set the music and original-video levels.
- Save the Reel as a draft or share it.
Adding more video gives the Reel more runtime; it does not change the maximum excerpt Instagram makes available for a particular song.

Select the longest section Instagram offers
- Open the Reel editor and select Audio, Music or the music-note icon.
- Choose the track, then inspect the waveform or song slider.
- Move the selection window through the song and choose the longest range offered.
- Preview the final seconds to confirm where the excerpt ends.
The slider changes which part plays, not necessarily how long Instagram has cleared or enabled that track for your Reel. There is no reliable, Instagram-wide rule such as “15 seconds” or “90 seconds” for every song.
When the song ends before the video
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The video and song end together | Nothing is malfunctioning. Add more clips or photos if the Reel should continue. |
| The video continues but the selected song stops | Reopen the audio control, check for a longer range, try another upload or version of the track, or use original audio. |
| You need a custom-length or repeating bed | Build the audio in an editor and upload the finished video as a Reel. |
| The music control is missing | Update Instagram, then check account, post-type and regional availability. |
Licensed-music access varies by country or region, account type and rights agreement. Some business accounts and post types have restricted access. Instagram’s availability guidance is at this Help Center page.
Use an external editor for a full-length or looped track
This is the most reliable method when Instagram’s selectable excerpt is too short.

- Open a video editor such as CapCut (capcut.com), InShot (inshot.com) or VN Video Editor (vlognow.me).
- Import the Reel video.
- Import music you created, licensed or are otherwise legally permitted to use.
- Place the track beneath the video. Duplicate or extend the audio until it covers the required duration.
- Trim the final copy so the music ends with the video, and adjust fades or volume.
- Export the completed video in a format suitable for Instagram.
- Upload it as a Reel. If Instagram asks to add music, do not add the same song again unless you intentionally want two audio layers.
Looping a file in an editor does not make copyrighted music legal. Editing software cannot bypass rights enforcement; it only changes the media file.

Keep speech, ambience and music together
If you want both the video’s original sound and background music, use Instagram’s audio-mixing or volume controls when they are available. Lower the music until dialogue and ambient sound remain clear. Because these controls differ between accounts and app versions, preview with headphones.
If the controls are absent or unreliable, pre-mix both tracks in the external editor: keep the original audio on one track, add the background music on another, and export one finished video. Instagram confirms that Reels can use music and original audio, but does not promise identical mixing controls in every interface. See the original-audio guidance.

Why the Music button or a longer option may be missing
- Your Instagram app is out of date; Instagram recommends updating it.
- The feature has not been enabled for your account or current app build.
- Your account is a business account with restricted licensed-music access.
- The song is unavailable in your country or region.
- The post type or content has music restrictions.
- You are editing on a computer, where some mobile Reel-audio functions are not offered.
- Instagram is testing a different interface, so the control may be labeled Audio, Music or shown only as an icon.
Instagram says the music feature is not available to everyone. Updating the app may help, but it cannot override account or rights restrictions.

Instagram’s standard licensed library is governed by rights-holder agreements and is intended for personal, non-commercial use. A business account, advertisement or branded post may need separately cleared music. Regional catalogues can differ as well.

| Your goal | Best route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Use a popular song in a personal Reel | Add it through Instagram’s Audio/Music control | The available excerpt may be limited |
| Cover a longer video | Extend the Reel, then choose the longest offered section | The song can still end before the video |
| Use a full song or custom loop | Pre-edit audio that you created or properly licensed | You carry responsibility for the music rights |
| Publish commercially | Use properly licensed music or Sound Collection | Some library tracks will be unavailable |
If Instagram mutes the Reel after posting
Muting can follow a rights change, regional restriction, account limitation or altered music agreement. Check the notification and use Instagram’s replacement-audio option if it is offered. Otherwise select an available track, original audio or music cleared for the intended use. Replacing the audio does not automatically restore the original song.
Bottom line
Make the video longer first, then use Instagram’s slider to choose the longest section it offers. If the licensed excerpt remains capped, Instagram has no documented universal loop control: choose another track or upload a video containing audio you are legally allowed to extend and mix.
