To make OBS recordings smaller without lowering your YouTube stream quality, change the local recording settings separately from the live stream settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Advanced output mode, then adjust the Recording tab while leaving the Streaming tab unchanged. File size depends mainly on recording bitrate or quality, resolution, frame rate and codec—not on the stream bitrate if the two outputs are configured independently.
Keep recording size separate from live-stream quality
OBS can use different output settings for a local recording and a YouTube broadcast. In Advanced output mode, the Recording and Streaming tabs are configured separately; using a recording setting other than “Same as stream” can use additional computer resources, so test it during a representative stream. OBS recording guide and OBS overview explain the output modes.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Open Recording and choose a recording encoder and quality or bitrate below your current setting.
- Leave Streaming settings unchanged if your live stream is already stable and you only need smaller local files.
- Make a short test recording while streaming. Check detail, motion, audio, playback and editing compatibility before using the settings for a long session.
If you use Simple output mode, choose a recording quality below “Indistinguishable” or “Lossless”; OBS describes “High Quality” as a medium-file-size option. For separate control of recording and stream output, switch to Advanced mode.
Which settings reduce the file size?
Each reduction means less encoded information, so inspect a short sample before committing to it. Preserve the original aspect ratio and check small text, fine detail and fast motion—especially if the recording will be edited or repurposed.

| Change | Effect on recording | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lower recording bitrate or quality | Usually reduces file size directly. | Too low a setting can create visible compression artifacts. The right value depends on the scene and encoder. |
| Lower recording resolution, for example from 1080p to 720p | Reduces the amount of picture detail encoded and can reduce file size. | Fine details and text become less clear; retain the same aspect ratio. |
| Lower recording frame rate | Reduces the number of frames recorded and can lower file size. | Motion looks less smooth. Consider it only if the content works at a lower frame rate. |
| Use a more efficient codec | Can produce a smaller file at comparable perceived quality, depending on encoder and content. | Playback, editing support, licensing and encoding load vary by codec and hardware. |
There is no single recording bitrate that suits every OBS scene: a static documentary interview, a detailed desktop capture and fast-moving footage do not encode alike. OBS’s published bitrate examples in its hardware-encoding guide are tied to particular recording scenarios, not universal YouTube settings. OBS overview covers resolution and FPS controls, while its recording preset guide describes quality and file-size trade-offs.
Choose an encoder without creating a compatibility problem
OBS’s quality/file-size preference for local recording is AV1, then HEVC, then H.264, when suitable encoders are available. That is a preference, not a reason to switch blindly. AV1 may have weaker editing-software support; HEVC has compatibility and licensing considerations; H.264 is widely compatible. Real-time software encoding can require a high-end CPU. Hardware encoders shift work to GPU hardware, but older hardware generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Confirm that your editor and playback devices support the codec before changing it. See OBS audio and video formats and OBS hardware encoding.

For a clear size reference, OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide (2023) estimates that its Lossless preset can use around 7 GB of data per minute. That is an approximate figure for that preset, which uses the CPU encoder—not a typical recording-size estimate. OBS recording encoder presets.
Set a YouTube live bitrate for your actual upload connection
India does not have one bitrate that is right for every creator. The useful measure is stable outbound upload capacity at the time and place you stream, including competition from other household or office traffic. YouTube notes that download speeds are often higher than upload speeds and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” YouTube streaming tips and YouTube live encoder settings provide guidance.

The current YouTube Help H.264 table, accessed 2026-10-03, lists these live bitrate figures. Match the table to the ingest codec you select; YouTube gives different recommendations for AV1 and H.265.
| Live resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | not stated | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 live-encoder recommendations, not a promise that a connection can sustain them. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. Check its current live encoder settings for the selected codec and any changes to its guidance.

- Run a speed test under the network conditions you usually stream in; test while other typical household devices are active if that reflects your normal use.
- Compare the stable upload result with the bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec.
- OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point for stream bitrate. Treat this as a diagnostic guideline, not a guaranteed formula; leave headroom for fluctuations and other traffic. OBS connection troubleshooting.
- If the stream drops frames, reduce the live bitrate and test again. If that is not enough, consider a lower live resolution or frame rate rather than forcing a bitrate the connection cannot hold.
- Use a wired network when possible. If connection trouble persists, OBS suggests trying a different server.
Changing the recording bitrate does not fix an unstable live upload; change the Streaming settings only when the live connection or desired stream quality calls for it.

OBS recommends recording to MKV because an unfinished file can remain recoverable if OBS or the system stops unexpectedly. If your editor or upload workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s built-in remuxing feature after recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding: it is useful for compatibility and recovery, but does not meaningfully compress the video or reduce its size. Troubleshoot large files or unstable streams
- The recording is still too large: Lower recording quality or bitrate first, then try a lower recording resolution or frame rate if the content tolerates it. Make one change at a time and compare sample recordings.
- The recording looks blocky: Raise recording quality or bitrate, or use a more efficient supported encoder. Check fast motion and fine detail, where compression problems are easier to spot.
- The editor will not open the recording: Check the editor’s codec support. Remuxing MKV to MP4 may help with container compatibility, but it does not change the encoded video codec.
- The live stream drops frames while the recording looks fine: Check upload stability and live bitrate, not just the recording profile. Reduce the live bitrate or live resolution, test on a wired connection, and try a different server if needed.
- OBS struggles after separate recording settings are enabled: Those settings can require additional computer resources. Test while streaming, then use a less demanding recording encoder or return to “Same as stream” if necessary.
