How to Make an Always-On YouTube Stream from a Google Drive Playlist

OBS can loop local video files from a Google Drive playlist into YouTube Live, but it does not document native Drive playlist playback. Here’s how to prepare, stream, and monitor it.

You can make an always-on YouTube stream from videos stored in Google Drive by first making the video files available on a computer, then using OBS Studio to play them as a looping playlist and send the feed to YouTube Live. OBS’s documented playlist workflow uses files the computer can access; it does not establish a direct Google Drive playlist connection. The computer, files, OBS, and internet connection must stay available while you stream.

What you need before you start

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists both as eligibility requirements. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
  • OBS Studio and VLC installed on the streaming computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries and may not appear unless VLC is installed. OBS Project: Media Sources
  • The video files from Drive available as stable media files on that computer, with enough local storage for the files you plan to play.
  • A reliable upload connection that can sustain the bitrate you choose, plus time to preview and monitor the stream.

Google Drive is the file source in this workflow, not the live-stream playlist service. The OBS documentation describes local media files and playlists, not direct Drive playback or automatic detection of Drive playlist edits. Treat any Drive synchronization as a separate step and test that the actual local files are present and playable before going live.

Prepare the playlist files from Google Drive

  1. Download or synchronize the desired videos from Drive to the streaming computer using the Drive tools and settings available to you.
  2. Confirm each file is fully available locally, rather than only represented by an online-only placeholder. Open and play each file on the streaming computer.
  3. Put the files in a stable folder and settle their order before configuring OBS. If you rename or move a file later, update its entry in the OBS playlist.
  4. Check that you have the rights needed to stream each video and its audio on YouTube. Being able to access a file in Drive does not grant streaming rights.

Do not rely on a Drive folder or playlist changing live inside OBS. The documented OBS sources do not promise that Drive changes will refresh in an active broadcast.

Choose the right OBS source

Need OBS source What to configure
Repeat one video Media Source Select the local file and enable Loop.
Play several videos in sequence and repeat them VLC Video source Add the local files in the desired order and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for the source to be available.

OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items, unlike the single-item Media Source. Its documentation also lists 400 ms as the VLC source’s default network caching value; that is a software default, not a guarantee of smooth playback. OBS Project: Media Sources

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build and test the looping source in OBS

  1. Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, install VLC, restart OBS, and check again.
  3. Give the source a recognizable name, then add the local video files in the order you want them played.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties. For a single file instead, add Media Source, choose the local file, and enable its Loop option.
  5. Start playback in OBS and watch a full transition between at least two playlist items, if applicable. Check picture, audio levels, aspect ratio, and that the next item loads.
  6. If media stutters, first verify that the files are local and the computer can decode them smoothly. The documented 400 ms network-caching default is not a playback-performance target; do not change it expecting it to fix unrelated decode, storage, or network issues.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream using the current interface.
  2. Copy the stream URL/server and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the applicable YouTube service or custom configuration, and enter the current server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. It enables an encoder to send a feed to the associated stream; do not publish it, send it to untrusted people, or reuse an exposed key. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for supported video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings rather than copying settings for a different resolution or connection. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  5. Set OBS output and video settings to match the intended stream quality and the capacity of your upload connection. Do not choose a bitrate your connection cannot sustain consistently.

Preview, go live, and monitor

  1. In OBS, start the stream when the scene, playlist, and audio are ready.
  2. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, then inspect its preview for correct video, audio, and stream status before making the event public or starting the broadcast as prompted.
  3. Check the channel or watch page from another device or browser session to confirm viewers can access the stream.
  4. Keep an eye on OBS and Live Control Room for dropped frames, connection warnings, silent audio, a stuck source, or a playlist that stops advancing. A looping source alone does not keep the computer or network running.

YouTube’s current help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous stream will produce one complete replay. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Copyright and YouTube’s live-stream rules

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the live stream to avoid being interrupted. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
VLC Video is not listed in OBS sources VLC is not installed or OBS cannot access its libraries. Install VLC, restart OBS, then check the source list again.
A video is missing, black, or fails to advance The file is unavailable locally, its path changed, or the playlist entry is invalid. Open the file on the streaming computer, restore it to the expected stable folder, and reselect it in the source properties.
The stream never appears in YouTube’s preview The server URL or stream key is incorrect, or OBS is not connecting. Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream into OBS and confirm the stream is active there.
Video or audio is choppy The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the computer may not decode the media reliably. Check OBS connection and performance indicators, lower output demands to a level the connection and computer can sustain, and test the files locally again.
Live stream is interrupted by a copyright notice YouTube detected a match to third-party material. Use material you have rights to broadcast; if licensed, contact the rights owner about allowlisting the channel in Content ID.
The broadcast stops when unattended The streaming computer, power, file access, OBS, or internet connection did not remain operational. Check power and sleep settings, local file availability, OBS status, and network stability; plan active monitoring or use a cloud service designed to keep the stream running.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids leaving a home computer and connection running: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer can be off, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
