Set Windows to stay awake while plugged in, make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream, and keep a local recording. There is an important limit: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so do not count on a complete replay of one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and the archive limit
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its listed minimum age for live streaming is 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for current eligibility guidance.
Plan for continuity and replay separately. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its archive guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The source does not guarantee that a stream beyond that threshold will be saved. Keep a local recording if you need an archive, and do not assume DVR rewind will be available throughout a very long broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR settings guidance.
Create the YouTube stream and connect your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live. Create a new stream or schedule one. Choose the encoder workflow rather than the webcam workflow if your source is a pre-produced video, screen, gameplay, or another input carried by an encoder. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- In your encoder’s streaming settings, choose its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, copy the server URL shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s server or ingest URL field. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection.
- Copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream-key field. YouTube describes this key as the password and address that allow the encoder to send the feed. Treat it like a password: do not share or publish it. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Start the encoder. Wait for the incoming picture to appear in Live Control Room, then check the image and sound before selecting Go live. For a scheduled stream, the encoder feed and the public broadcast are separate actions: confirm the preview first, then start the live event from Control Room.
- While live, watch stream-health messages and check that any local recording file is continuing to grow. When ending the broadcast, stop the stream in YouTube; after the event has stopped there, stop the encoder.
Choose video settings your PC and connection can sustain
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream: the appropriate figure depends on resolution, frame rate, codec and the source’s motion. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the relevant combination rather than applying a universal number. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, so total stream bitrate should remain below the sustained upload capacity with that margin available.

YouTube’s documented encoder choices include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; constant bitrate encoding; up to 60 frames per second; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not more than four seconds. These are platform-supported settings and recommendations, not a promise that every Windows PC can encode every format. Pick settings your encoder and hardware can handle reliably, then test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to broadcast. Check the stream-health status before relying on the setup. Keep Windows awake while the stream is running
Set the plugged-in sleep timeout
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC will not sleep during the broadcast. Screen-off timing is separate: the display can turn off if you do not need it lit. Menu wording and available options may vary by device. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.

Check a laptop’s lid-close action
Many laptops sleep when the lid closes. In Control Panel, open Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and review the plugged-in action. Leave the lid open or set the plugged-in action so closing it will not put the PC to sleep. Follow Microsoft’s sleep and shutdown guidance if the available controls differ.
Test the complete chain before attempting 24/7 operation
- Run an encoder test long enough to check that the PC remains awake, the image and audio reach Live Control Room, and stream health stays acceptable.
- Use a representative source: motion and audio can expose encoding or bandwidth problems that a static test image will not.
- Confirm that the local recording is being written and that its file grows during the test.
- Check the PC’s power behavior, network stability and heat under sustained load. Keeping Windows awake alone does not prevent interruptions from encoder failure, updates, network or power loss, thermal limits, or other device-specific problems.
A Windows PC and YouTube ingest do not come with a documented guarantee of uninterrupted 24-hour availability in the guidance cited here. Treat continuous operation as best-effort, supervise a test, and decide in advance how you will respond if the encoder or connection stops.
