There is no single bitrate that guarantees a stable 24/7 YouTube stream on every Indian internet connection. Choose a bitrate for your resolution, frame rate and codec using YouTube’s live-stream settings, then verify that your actual upload connection can sustain it with about 20% headroom. For a conservative H.264 starting point, try 720p30 at 4 Mbps; for 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as its minimum but recommends 14 Mbps.
What bitrate should I use for a 24/7 YouTube live stream in India?
Start with the setting for the quality you intend to send, then test it on the same connection and encoder you will use for the broadcast. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 video-bitrate settings, not promises that an Indian ISP connection will sustain them. YouTube’s Help settings were accessed on October 3, 2026; check the current table if your encoder or target quality changes.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | More detail and motion smoothness require substantially more upload capacity than 1080p30. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Five Mbps is the listed minimum, not YouTube’s recommended target. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Use 60 fps only if the content benefits from smoother motion and the connection can sustain the higher target. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Four Mbps is a conservative illustrative starting point, not the platform minimum. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | A lower-resolution option when the uplink cannot reliably sustain HD. |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Consider for static or low-detail material when continuity matters more than image detail. |
These are video bitrates. Audio also uses bandwidth, so the total stream rate is higher than the video figure alone. YouTube also lists recommended AV1 or H.265/HEVC rates of 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. Encoder support and the correct setting depend on the codec actually selected; use YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than its separate recommendations for uploading ordinary videos.
How much upload speed do I need for YouTube Live?
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload headroom above the total bitrate of the stream. If you send a primary and backup stream at the same time, account for both streams’ bitrates when estimating the required outbound capacity. Do not treat your advertised download speed—or even a single upload speed-test result—as proof of sustained streaming capacity. YouTube notes that upload can be slower than download and that other people using the network can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder.

As a simple planning calculation, multiply the combined stream bitrate by 1.2, then confirm that your actual connection can sustain at least that much upload in realistic conditions. This is a planning estimate based on YouTube’s headroom guidance, not an ISP performance guarantee. There is no established nationwide Indian upload-speed baseline or provider ranking that can tell you whether a particular plan will work: measure the wired or Wi-Fi path you will actually use, including at busy times.
Test the connection you will broadcast over
- Test from the encoder’s location and on the network path you plan to keep in service. Ethernet can remove Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot create upload capacity that the connection does not have.
- Run sustained tests at representative busy times, not only when the household or workplace network is quiet. Leave allowance for other users and devices.
- Send a private or unlisted test stream with representative audio and moving video. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while it runs.
- If frames drop or the connection fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. For an always-on channel, a lower steady setting is more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly breaks up.
Which encoder settings should I use?
YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart, plus AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted ingest option. Its live service automatically transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats for viewers.

- Choose the ingest quality and codec. Select resolution and frame rate in your encoder, then use the matching codec row and bitrate from YouTube’s live settings. Do not choose a 1080p60 bitrate for a 720p30 output simply because the connection can carry it.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not let the interval exceed four seconds.
- Set audio. Use AAC or MP3. Include audio in your total upload-capacity calculation.
- Connect to YouTube. In Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the default; a custom stream key can be configured for manual stream resolution. Set the matching output values in the encoder.
- Check the incoming stream before relying on it. Confirm the preview, audio, selected resolution and stream health in Live Control Room before treating the broadcast as ready for continuous operation.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it in public documents. YouTube’s setup guidance is available in set up your encoder for live streaming.
What changes when the stream is meant to run 24/7?
A bitrate setting alone cannot make a continuous broadcast reliable. Test the full encoder and network arrangement, watch its health, and decide how you will handle a failure before leaving it unattended.

Plan for interruption and failover
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls to the backup. If you configure a primary and backup stream, include both bitrates in the upload-capacity calculation. Check that the backup source is ready and that the test actually produces the expected player behavior; do not assume failover works just because a backup encoder is configured.
Plan separately for recording and rewind
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the complete programme matters, keep a local recording and confirm that its file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; viewers cannot seek back to before the stream began. A 24/7 stream should therefore not be treated as a dependable full-length replay or as a DVR-enabled programme with unrestricted rewind.

Copyright and repeat-content checks for a continuous channel
Before looping a documentary, music bed, or other recording, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream it on YouTube. A recording being available online or owned by your production does not by itself establish that every included soundtrack, clip, photograph, or archival segment is cleared for a continuous live broadcast. YouTube may apply copyright controls to live content; a claim or interruption can disrupt the stream regardless of how well the encoder is configured.
For monetized channels, also consider whether the channel’s overall programming adds original value rather than merely repeating material. Technical compliance with bitrate and ingest settings does not establish eligibility for monetization or resolve copyright permissions. Review YouTube’s current rules and the rights for each item in the loop before scheduling it.

Troubleshooting bitrate and connection problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | The available sustained upload is below the stream’s total bitrate, or varies as other users share the connection. | Measure upload on the encoder’s actual network path; account for audio and any backup stream; lower bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| Encoder settings appear correct, but the stream will not connect | The wrong stream URL or key may be in use, or the key may have been changed or copied incorrectly. | Use the URL and key currently displayed in Live Control Room. Keep the key private. |
| Video looks worse than expected despite a high bitrate | The encoder output resolution, frame rate or codec may not match the intended settings, or the source itself may lack detail. | Check the encoder’s actual output values and the Live Control Room preview; choose the matching YouTube setting for the sent format. |
| Viewers cannot rewind far enough or no full archive appears | Streams longer than 12 hours have limitations: an archive may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. | Keep a local recording when preservation matters and set viewer expectations about rewind. |
| Backup encoder does not take over as expected | Failover may not be configured or behaving as expected. | Perform YouTube’s recommended failover test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player switches to the backup. |
