The Mac must stay powered, connected, and able to keep the encoder running; a playlist alone does not make the broadcast continuous. Before relying on it unattended, verify the current OBS and YouTube controls and test the complete setup, including interruption recovery.
How the setup works
The signal path is: demo video files or a playlist → encoder output on the Mac mini → YouTube Live ingestion → the broadcast and its watch page. YouTube describes the encoder’s role simply: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” OBS Studio is a software encoder option for macOS; YouTube also lists cloud-streaming services and standalone hardware for prerecorded continuous streams.
This is a local-hosted arrangement. The Mac mini, encoder, source media, and internet connection are all part of the operating path. If the computer sleeps, the encoder exits, or the connection fails, the stream may stop or need attention. No particular Mac mini model or configuration is established as adequate for every resolution, frame rate, codec, or playlist, so validate the machine against your intended output.
Check YouTube eligibility before configuring the Mac
- The channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it and allow time for activation before scheduling a launch; see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Use a YouTube stream key and server URL in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. Do not include it in screenshots, public documents, or recordings.
Set up the Mac mini and OBS workflow
The steps below describe the parts of the workflow without assuming current menu names or a specific playlist feature: the detailed OBS guide for YouTube broadcasts was last updated October 8, 2021. Check the current OBS and YouTube interfaces before a scheduled launch.

- Prepare the demo files. Put the approved recordings in a known location on the Mac mini or attached storage. Decide which videos should play, in what order, and whether the sequence should repeat. The available documentation does not establish a particular OBS playlist-loop procedure; confirm that your chosen current source or playback method actually repeats the intended media.
- Install and open OBS Studio. Create an output that plays the prepared video material. Confirm that the preview shows the correct file, aspect ratio, and audio state before connecting to YouTube. Avoid assuming that a file list automatically loops or advances as intended.
- Create or select a YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast and locate its stream URL and key using YouTube’s current encoder workflow. Keep the key private.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Use the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube in the current OBS integration or stream settings. Prefer the secure RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL; Google documents the valid endpoint and application path, port 443, and hostname authentication requirements at the RTMPS ingest documentation.
- Start the encoder and verify the broadcast separately. Starting OBS means it is sending encoder data; it does not by itself prove the broadcast is live and visible to viewers. Check Live Control Room status and open the watch page from a separate browser or device. Confirm that the expected demo is playing and that audio is present.
- Test the full playlist and an interruption. Let the sequence run through its end and verify the next item or repeat behavior. Then test a brief encoder or network interruption at a time when a failed launch will not disrupt viewers. Confirm how the current OBS and YouTube settings behave before treating the setup as unattended.
Understand scheduled starts, stops, and recovery
The OBS Project guide describes scheduled-broadcast controls including auto-start and auto-stop. Auto-start can put a scheduled broadcast live when encoder data begins. Auto-stop ends the broadcast when encoder data stops, which can matter if the encoder is expected to reconnect and resume the same broadcast. The guide is dated October 8, 2021, so confirm the present interface and behavior rather than relying on old menu instructions: OBS Project’s YouTube Live setup guide.
YouTube’s API documentation describes reusing one stream configuration across scheduled broadcasts and keeping a 24/7 broadcast active while another broadcast is separately live. That establishes a platform concept, not a guarantee that a Mac mini, OBS, a media playlist, or an internet connection will recover automatically after a fault. Decide whether a stopped encoder should end the broadcast, and test the chosen behavior with the current YouTube controls.

Prepare for copyright and channel-policy issues
Only stream demo footage and audio you have rights to use, including music, voiceover, product imagery, and any third-party material embedded in recordings. A continuous prerecorded stream is still a YouTube broadcast; using a playlist does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee eligibility under YouTube’s channel policies. Check permissions and YouTube’s current rules before scheduling long runs, and avoid presenting repeated or minimally transformed material as original work if that would mislead viewers or conflict with applicable policies.
Choose between a Mac, cloud streaming, and hardware
These are different operating models, not a verified performance ranking. YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud-streaming and standalone options alongside software encoders; it does not compare their reliability or current prices.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, restrictions in the previous 90 days, and whether first-time activation has completed. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- OBS sends data but viewers see no live broadcast: Check the broadcast status in Live Control Room, confirm the selected broadcast and stream key, and inspect the watch page separately. Encoder output and a viewer-facing live broadcast are distinct states.
- YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem: Confirm that OBS uses the URL and key supplied for that broadcast, and use YouTube’s secure RTMPS endpoint. Avoid manually substituting endpoint details.
- The demo plays once and stops: The actual media source or playlist mechanism may not be configured to advance or repeat. Test an entire cycle before launch; do not assume a playlist loops because it appears as a list.
- The broadcast ends when OBS stops: Review the current auto-stop and scheduled-broadcast settings. A setting that ends the broadcast on encoder stop may be unsuitable if a reconnect is meant to resume it.
- The stream does not resume after an interruption: Test the complete reconnect path, including whether the broadcast remains open and the encoder re-establishes its output. The documentation cited here does not promise recovery for a local Mac setup.
Use the right workflow for your uptime requirement
A Mac mini and OBS can form a practical local encoder setup, but unattended operation depends on details that must be validated on the actual Mac, macOS version, OBS version, media source, YouTube broadcast controls, and network. YouTube’s documentation confirms the encoder and ingest model; it does not establish a universally suitable Mac mini specification or guarantee local recovery. For a demonstration stream that must continue without a home computer running, a cloud workflow removes that particular dependency.
