The setup is operational only when the platform’s preview or public player is receiving the stream—not merely when the local process reports as active. This guide covers a single combined video-and-audio file, a protected stream key, service supervision, verification, and common failure checks. Confirm your platform’s current ingest URL and encoding requirements before going live.
What you need before starting
- An Ubuntu computer or server that can remain powered on, with the media file stored locally and enough network capacity for a continuous upload.
- A copy of FFmpeg. Install it using your chosen package source, then check the installed build and available encoders rather than assuming every Ubuntu package includes the same options.
- A live-stream destination that provides an ingest URL and stream key, and permission to broadcast there.
- A fireplace video and audio track that you own or are licensed to stream. Keep the license or permission records; a file being available online does not establish rebroadcast rights.
FFmpeg can read, filter, convert, and output audiovisual media. Its command-line documentation describes input and output options, and its protocol documentation covers RTMP publishing and FLV output. See FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation. The destination’s current ingest address and encoder requirements still need to be checked with that platform.
Choose a looping design
One combined file: the simplest starting point
If the fireplace picture and crackling audio are already synchronized in one file, loop that input indefinitely by placing -stream_loop -1 before the input filename:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/fireplace.mp4 [encoding and output options] -f flv "${RTMP_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}"
This is a command shape, not a universal publishing preset. Supply the output options required by your destination and confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoders. The example assumes the destination accepts RTMP and FLV; verify its current URL format and output requirements before using it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate picture and sound files
When video and audio are separate, plan how each input loops and how FFmpeg keeps them synchronized. Different file lengths can cause one stream to end before the other or create discontinuities at loop boundaries. Test transitions and audio continuity for longer than a single cycle before relying on the setup. A community implementation using separate playlists reported an audio demuxer failure in that particular deployment; treat it as a cautionary example, not proof of a general FFmpeg defect or a guaranteed fix. See the community setup and operations notes.
Set the platform-specific output options
There is no bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, keyframe-interval, codec, or continuous-broadcast setting that can safely be prescribed here as current for every destination. These requirements can change, and the available sources do not establish current YouTube Live specifications. Check the official guidance and live-control interface for your chosen platform, then match FFmpeg’s output to those requirements. Do not assume that an example URL or key format remains valid.

Inspect the installed FFmpeg build and encoders on the Ubuntu host before adding codec options. A package may not expose every encoder. If you are weighing encoding against stream-copying, consider the source file’s compatibility with the destination as well as CPU use; test the actual output and ingest status instead of assuming either method will work.
Protect the stream key
A stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your live destination. Do not put a real key in a public command history, repository, or systemd unit committed to source control. The maintainers of one community setup explicitly warn that the key should be treated like a password and not committed. If a key is exposed, rotate it through the platform’s current controls.

For a service, use a protected credential mechanism or a file with access limited to the dedicated service account. Avoid embedding the key in a unit file that may be shared. Do not start the service until you have confirmed that the process can read the credential without exposing it in logs or public files.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
A systemd service can start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a process failure. Run it as a dedicated, unprivileged user, configure network ordering appropriate to the host, and retain useful logs. Restart supervision can restore a failed process; it cannot prove that the platform is still receiving playable video.

- Create a dedicated service account and give it only the access it needs to read the media and protected credential.
- Create a systemd service that runs the tested FFmpeg command, starts after the network is available where appropriate, and uses a restart-on-failure policy.
- Reload systemd, start the service, and inspect its status and journal. Confirm that FFmpeg opened the input and connected to the intended ingest endpoint.
- Test stopping and restarting the service, then reboot the host and verify that the service starts as expected.
- Check the destination’s incoming-stream preview and the viewer-facing player. Do not call the stream operational solely because systemd says the process is active.
Keep the unit and credential handling specific to your host; a copied service file may refer to paths, users, or security settings that do not exist on your installation.

- Service is inactive or repeatedly restarting: inspect
systemctl statusand the service journal for an invalid path, unreadable media, missing encoder, malformed output options, or a rejected ingest connection. - Service is active but the public stream is stalled: check the destination’s incoming-stream health and preview, then inspect FFmpeg logs and network connectivity. A healthy local process does not guarantee a healthy viewer-facing stream.
- Video or audio stops at a loop boundary: test the source through multiple complete cycles. For separate files, revisit loop lengths and synchronization; for a combined file, verify that the source itself decodes cleanly at the boundary.
- Host becomes overloaded: check CPU use and review whether the chosen output requires encoding or can use a compatible stream-copy approach. Confirm compatibility with the destination before changing output options.
- Stream disconnects after a network interruption: check connectivity and whether FFmpeg exited or remained attached to an unusable connection. A restart policy helps when the process fails, but verify recovery at the destination rather than assuming it occurred.
- Disk space declines: inspect the media and log locations and remove or rotate logs according to your host’s policy. The source material does not establish a universal storage allowance for this setup.
For ongoing checks, combine service status and journal review with CPU, disk, and network monitoring, plus the platform’s own incoming-stream preview. The last check is essential because local health and public playback can disagree.

Copyright and continuous-stream considerations
Confirm rights for both the fireplace footage and the crackling audio, including the right to broadcast them continuously. The sources available for this guide do not establish the rights status of any particular ambience file or a platform’s current copyright or reused-content rules. Check the applicable platform policies before publishing, and retain licenses or other permission records. Do not assume that crediting an owner alone grants streaming rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an Ubuntu computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the video without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
