To make a YouTube radio livestream with a waveform visualizer, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send it your radio audio and a video scene from OBS, and add an audio-reactive visualizer as an OBS Browser source. Test the sound and motion before going live, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and make sure you have the rights needed for every track and visual.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- An encoder such as OBS, a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream bitrate, and an audio feed for your radio program.
- A video feed. A radio stream still needs video: use a station image, a looping video, or a visualizer that responds to the audio.
- Permission to use every track and visual in a live broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- Choose the Stream tab to set up a new encoder stream, or open Manage to schedule a broadcast.
- Set the broadcast details, including its title, visibility, and other options. For a scheduled broadcast, select the intended event in Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Do not share or publish the key.
- In OBS, open the stream settings, choose the YouTube service if available, and enter or connect the server URL and key. Use the custom server option if you need to enter the URL and key separately.
Starting the encoder sends the feed to YouTube and creates the watch page for a new stream. For a scheduled broadcast, wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room, then select Go live there when you are ready to begin.
Build the radio scene and waveform in OBS
Add the radio audio
Add the source that carries your radio program to the OBS scene and check that its audio meter responds. This might be a local playback source, a playlist player, or another audio feed in your setup. Listen to the actual output rather than relying only on the meter: check volume, missing channels, clipping, silence between tracks, and whether the music continues for the intended duration.

Add video behind the audio
Add a station card or other still image as the simplest video feed. A looping video can provide motion without a reactive visualizer. Arrange and crop the visual sources in the OBS preview, and confirm the scene fills the output frame without obscuring any station information.
Add an audio-reactive waveform
- Obtain an HTML-based waveform visualizer that can react to the audio source you intend to broadcast.
- In OBS, add a Browser source to the scene and configure it to load the visualizer. Use the dimensions and audio-input options specified by that visualizer.
- Position the Browser source over the background image or video. Adjust its size and placement in the OBS preview.
- Play representative audio and verify that the visualizer actually moves in response. Confirm that the Browser source can access the intended audio signal on your operating system and in your chosen configuration.
A Browser source is an implementation route, not a guarantee that every visualizer, plugin, browser configuration, or operating system will capture the desired audio automatically. If it does not react, check the visualizer’s audio-input instructions and confirm that the signal reaching it is the same one audible in the OBS mix. A static card or loop is a valid fallback if you cannot make the waveform work reliably.

Choose encoder settings and check your connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lets the creator choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; YouTube detects those settings and transcodes the feed for viewers. It lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s H.264 table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not measurements of your connection. Consult YouTube’s current table for the exact combination you plan to use rather than applying one preset to every stream. Your available upload capacity must support the selected bitrate reliably.

Test the full broadcast before going live
- Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives a preview.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the real program, as YouTube recommends. Include the waveform or loop, representative music, and any transitions that will occur during the broadcast.
- Listen to the YouTube preview, not only the local OBS monitor. Check for silence, distortion, sync problems, unexpected sources, and an unresponsive visualizer.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indication while the test runs. If the connection is unstable, lower the selected bitrate or resolution and test again.
- For a scheduled broadcast, use the Live Control Room preview and start the event there when it is ready.
Choose how the stream will stay on air
The right approach depends on whether you need a live waveform, who will supervise the stream, and how much maintenance you can handle. The sources describing these approaches do not establish comparative uptime or total cost, so compare your actual service terms, recovery needs, and operating costs.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on a local computer | You want direct control of the scene and can leave the computer and connection running. | The stream depends on the computer, power, network, and someone’s ability to troubleshoot them. |
| FFmpeg on a VPS | You are comfortable managing a server and want a background playout process; a technical guide describes using restart handling. | You take responsibility for server setup, process management, and recovery. The cited material does not provide an independent reliability or cost comparison. |
| Hosted continuous playout | You want playlist playout managed remotely and the service’s visual tools suit your needs. | Check the provider’s current capabilities, terms, recovery behavior, and total cost; vendor descriptions are not independent uptime tests. |
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan around that limit if you want a continuous broadcast to remain available as a single archive.

Clear music and visual rights
Before broadcasting, confirm that your permissions cover the actual live-stream use of every recording, composition, and visual. A music subscription does not necessarily grant every right needed for a live broadcast. Check the current license terms for your catalog, territory, platform, and use, including any applicable public-performance, composition, and recording permissions. Live streams can be scanned by Content ID, so having a track in a library or playlist is not by itself proof that your specific broadcast is cleared.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Check the stream key and server URL. Confirm they match the broadcast in YouTube Studio and were entered in OBS without extra characters. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Check the encoder connection. Confirm OBS is streaming to the intended YouTube event and that the network can sustain the selected bitrate.
- Check activation status. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours.
The waveform is not moving
- Check that the audio is audible in OBS and that the visualizer is configured to receive that same signal.
- Review the Browser source and visualizer’s audio-input requirements. Compatibility depends on the specific visualizer and system configuration.
- Use a static image or loop for the broadcast if the visualizer cannot be made reliable before airtime.
The stream drops frames or shows poor health
- Compare the selected bitrate with your sustained upload capacity, then reduce bitrate or output resolution if needed.
- Check that the encoder uses CBR and that the keyframe interval is two seconds, not more than four seconds.
- Run another test with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health before starting the public broadcast.
The audio is silent, distorted, or missing from the preview
- Check the OBS audio meter and listen to the YouTube preview to isolate whether the issue is in the source, OBS mix, or outgoing feed.
- Confirm the intended audio source is active and that no scene or source transition removed it.
- Check levels for clipping and retest the whole path before going live.
