Use an unlisted test livestream in YouTube Studio, not a public broadcast. Connect your encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, play the actual radio audio and planned visual, then listen from the viewer side and check stream health before ending the test. YouTube specifically recommends an unlisted livestream for testing audio, video, and equipment.
Before you start: confirm the channel can livestream
Check livestream eligibility before troubleshooting your encoder. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If you are unsure whether the channel is eligible, check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements; eligibility rules may change.
Why use an unlisted test stream?
YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted livestream settings. Its filming guidance specifically recommends an unlisted livestream to test audio, video, and equipment. Unlisted is therefore the clearest choice for a rehearsal you want to keep out of public discovery while still checking the normal watch-page playback path. Anyone with the link may be able to access an unlisted stream, so share it only with intended testers.
Private is also an available privacy setting, but YouTube’s cited testing advice names unlisted, not private. If you choose private for a particular access need, review the current access controls in Studio and make sure your intended testers can actually view it.

How to test a YouTube radio livestream before going public
- Open Live Control Room and select the intended stream. Confirm you have the correct channel and event before copying any settings.
- Set the rehearsal to Unlisted. Check the privacy setting on the test event itself; do not assume a reused event has the right visibility.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube treats the stream key like a password and address: it routes the encoder feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Enter it only in the intended encoder. Do not expose it in screenshots, on-air visuals, or public posts. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled event, wait until the feed appears in Live Control Room, then select Go live when ready. A local encoder meter alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving and playing the intended feed.
- Play representative radio content. Test the real program audio chain and the visual that will accompany the broadcast, such as the actual still image or motion graphic. Include representative changes or movement if the final stream will have them. This applies YouTube’s general advice to test material similar to the eventual stream; it is not a radio-specific YouTube feature.
- Check playback from the viewer side. Open the watch page on a separate device or browser and listen to the stream as a listener would. Check the channel or watch-page route and a mobile device if those are normal audience paths. This can expose silence, distortion, wrong source selection, or a visual problem that encoder meters do not reveal.
- Monitor stream health and messages. Watch Live Control Room for stream-health warnings while the representative material plays. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking the preview, stream health, and playback quality.
- End the test cleanly. Stop the event in YouTube, then stop the encoder after YouTube has stopped the stream. Review any resulting archive and its privacy setting before reusing it or deleting it. Before the real broadcast, independently verify that the public event is set to the intended visibility.
Audio, visual, and stream settings to check
Audio chain
Confirm the encoder is receiving the intended program source, that listeners can hear it on the watch page, and that levels remain consistent through representative material. If the show uses transitions, silence, or changes between sources, include those in the rehearsal. The practical goal is to test the complete path from program audio into the encoder and out through YouTube playback, rather than relying only on a local meter.
Visual feed and encoding
For a radio-led broadcast, the visual may be a still or graphic, but test the exact visual intended for the public event. Check that it appears in YouTube’s preview and viewer playback. YouTube provides encoder guidance on codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, but the appropriate values depend on your encoder and how the visual is encoded. Do not apply a video bitrate recommendation blindly to an audio-only or minimally animated radio presentation.

Upload capacity and connection
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your streaming computer. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming; Wi-Fi can still work, but neither a cable nor a successful short test guarantees that a congested connection will remain stable during the full broadcast.
If your computer and network support a wired connection, using Ethernet is an optional way to reduce variability. The key check is still whether available upload capacity comfortably exceeds the configured total bitrate under the conditions in which you will broadcast.

Quick preflight checklist
- Channel eligibility is confirmed and the correct event is selected.
- The rehearsal privacy is set to unlisted, and the stream key is protected.
- YouTube’s preview appears after the encoder starts sending.
- The test includes representative radio audio and the actual planned visual.
- Playback has been checked by listening on the viewer side, including mobile if relevant.
- Configured bitrate fits available upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom considered.
- Stream health and messages are clear during the test.
- The test is ended in Studio, then the encoder is stopped; the archive and privacy are reviewed.
- The real event’s privacy is checked separately and set to the intended public state.
Common test problems and what to check
- No preview in Live Control Room: confirm the selected event, server URL, and stream key in the encoder. Check channel eligibility before assuming the encoder is at fault.
- Encoder meters move but YouTube playback is silent: listen to the watch page on another device and verify the encoder’s selected audio source and complete program-audio path.
- Playback breaks up or stream health warns: compare the total configured bitrate with available upload bandwidth, account for other users on the network, and consider Ethernet where possible.
- Test viewers cannot open the stream: confirm the test is unlisted and share the correct watch-page link only with intended viewers. If using private instead, inspect Studio’s current access controls.
- The public event remains unlisted or private: inspect the actual event’s privacy setting before going live; do not rely on settings carried over from the rehearsal.
- A stream key may have been exposed: reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement key.
