Lower the stream’s playback quality or enable its data-saving mode, then estimate the reduced rate across all 24 hours. There is no single best resolution for every cartoon or device: the service, video encoding, screen, connection and data cap all matter. YouTube and Netflix provide specific controls; for other services, look for equivalent quality or data-use settings.
Change the setting that controls stream quality
Choose a lower resolution or a data-saving option in the player, and use a persistent preference for the metered network if the app offers one. Lower quality generally means a less-sharp picture, while automatic quality may rise when the connection allows it. The controls below are specific to YouTube and Netflix and may vary by device or app version.
YouTube
- While a video is playing, open the player’s Settings, select Quality, then choose Data saver or a lower available resolution. YouTube describes Data saver as lowering picture quality; videos may start faster. Higher picture quality uses more data and can take longer to start or buffer more often. The Advanced option is not available for every video. YouTube’s quality settings guidance explains the trade-offs.
- To set a preference, open your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Set the preference for Mobile networks separately from Wi-Fi, so a Wi-Fi choice does not inadvertently govern metered mobile playback.
Netflix
- In a browser, open Account → Profiles → choose the profile → Playback settings, then select a lower data setting.
- In the mobile app, open My Netflix → profile name → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage. Choose Save Data or Wi-Fi Only, as appropriate. The profile setting can constrain mobile controls; the mobile control may also be unavailable while Automatic is enabled or downloads are pending. See Netflix’s data-use settings for details.
Estimate what 24/7 viewing will use
Start with the service’s estimate per hour, when available. Multiply by 24 for a day, then by the number of viewing days. For example, a service estimate of 0.5 GB per hour implies 12 GB for 24 hours and 360 GB for 30 days; those totals are arithmetic based on that hourly estimate, not a guarantee of actual use.
Netflix’s Help Center figures, current when accessed on October 3, 2026, are per device and per hour: Low uses up to 0.3 GB; Medium up to 0.7 GB; High uses up to 1 GB at standard definition, up to 3 GB at HD, and up to 7 GB at 4K. Sustained for a full day, those rates imply 7.2, 16.8, 24, 72 and 168 GB respectively. The daily amounts are calculated from Netflix’s hourly figures, not separately published measurements. They describe Netflix generally, not a guaranteed rate for a particular cartoon livestream. Netflix also gives mobile estimates of about 4 hours per GB for Automatic and about 6 hours per GB for Save Data; Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more. Check Netflix’s current estimates and controls before planning a long run.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A separate planning conversion is useful if you know the stream’s sustained bitrate: 1 Mbps for 24 hours is approximately 10.8 decimal GB, and for 30 days approximately 324 GB. This is calculated from bitrate × time ÷ 8 and converted to decimal gigabytes; it is not a measured result for any service or video. Add headroom for variation in actual encoded bitrate, network overhead and player behavior, and compare the estimate with the cap on the connection.
What the quality labels do—and do not—tell you
YouTube classifies 360p and 480p as typical standard definition, 720p and 1080p as HD, and UHD as 2160–3840 vertical lines. Its guidance says UHD needs a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps and uses much more data than HD or SD. That 15 Mbps figure is a connection-speed recommendation, not a per-hour data estimate. YouTube’s video quality guidance describes the categories and UHD connection requirement.

Netflix recommends a stable connection of 3 Mbps or higher for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are connection-speed recommendations for those qualities, not guarantees of data used per hour. Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations provide the service-specific figures.
Why a cartoon’s exact data use is hard to predict
Resolution is a useful control, but it does not determine bitrate by itself. In a report published October 27, 2022, New Zealand’s Commerce Commission described Netflix’s 2021 encoding change: bitrate varies with video complexity, and a program with fewer colors and less movement, “like a cartoon,” is encoded at a lower bitrate than a fast-paced action film. The report said that under the change a 4K stream previously encoded at 15.6 Mbps would be transmitted at no more than 12 Mbps as a worst case. This is a dated, Netflix-specific description—not a current universal rate or a prediction for an individual stream. Read the Commerce Commission’s Spring 2022 report.

Do not assume that shrinking the player window reduces the amount downloaded; that is not established by the guidance cited here. Nor is there a dependable saving percentage for switching a particular cartoon to a lower setting. Use the service’s own estimate where offered, monitor actual usage if your provider supplies a meter, and leave a margin under the cap.
Choose a setting that fits the screen and the cap
- Start with the lowest quality that remains clear enough. Check whether faces, captions and important details are readable on the screen actually used for viewing.
- Prefer a data-saving mode on a metered connection. If quality is set to Automatic, the player may choose a higher setting as conditions change. Look for a separate default for cellular or mobile data.
- Check the connection’s problem type. If the concern is buffering because speed is limited, lowering quality may help playback stability as well as reduce data. A data cap is different: a faster connection does not remove the cap, and a slower one does not by itself specify total usage.
- Recheck after playback changes. A new episode, device, app preference or connection may alter the available quality or actual data rate.
Troubleshoot unexpected data use or playback
- Usage exceeds the estimate: Check that the lower setting is selected on the device and network in use, then verify whether the estimate is per device and whether more than one screen is streaming. Service estimates are not exact guarantees.
- Video still looks too sharp or consumes more than expected: Confirm that Automatic or a higher-quality preference is not overriding the intended choice; select a lower quality or data-saver mode where available.
- Playback buffers after lowering quality: Check the connection and try a lower available resolution. Netflix’s published speed figures are recommendations for quality, not evidence that a connection will be stable at every moment.
- The desired setting is missing: Options can differ by service, video and app. YouTube notes Advanced is not available for every video; Netflix mobile controls can be unavailable under certain profile or download conditions.
