How to Make a YouTube Intro Video

Build a YouTube intro around the video’s promise, give it a simple channel identity, and edit only what helps viewers move into the main content.

Make a YouTube intro by shaping a brief opening around the video’s promise: hook the viewer with what they’ll get, add a simple channel identifier, then move straight into the main content. You can create one with footage and editing tools you already have; YouTube Create is a free mobile option for eligible users.

Plan the opening around the video

Before editing, write one sentence that says what the viewer is about to learn, see, or experience. The intro should set up that promise rather than delay it with an unrelated animation. YouTube recommends considering how a video opens while writing, and planning the shots and footage you will need. YouTube’s video-editing guidance covers planning and pacing.

A simple structure to work from

  1. Hook: Start with a compelling moment, question, or clear statement tied to the video’s subject.
  2. Identify the channel: Add your channel name, logo, or a consistent visual motif if it helps viewers recognize your videos.
  3. Transition into the video: Begin the promised content without an unnecessary pause or repeated explanation.

This is an editorial framework, not a YouTube rule. The available guidance does not establish a universal ideal intro duration or show that a particular length improves views or retention. Keep only what helps the viewer understand what is coming.

Choose an editing tool that fits your workflow

You do not need a dedicated camera or paid editor to make a basic intro. YouTube advises creators to begin with equipment and software they already have; phones and computers may include editing tools. Choose based on your device, available footage, budget, and the text or motion controls you need.

Make an intro in YouTube Create

YouTube Create is a free mobile editing app, described by YouTube as free of charge and without ads. Its availability depends on country or region and device eligibility, so check YouTube Create’s current availability and requirements before relying on it. The cited eligibility guidance includes Android phones with at least 4 GB of RAM and iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later, plus Google sign-in and a supported region; requirements and availability can change.

  1. Open YouTube Create and start a project. Import a suitable clip, photo, or existing channel footage.
  2. Arrange the opening in the order you planned: hook, channel identifier if useful, and transition into the main video.
  3. Use text, style, and animation controls sparingly. You can also customize a template using your own photos or video. YouTube’s Create help page describes its editing features and templates.
  4. Preview the opening with the start of the main video. Shorten pauses, check that titles are readable on a phone, and make sure the visual energy fits the rest of the video.
  5. Export the project when it is ready, then review the exported video before uploading.

Use a desktop editor or software you already have

If you prefer editing on a computer, use an editor compatible with your device and footage. There is no single required program in YouTube’s guidance. Compare tools by cost, file compatibility, text and motion controls, template support, and how much complexity your planned intro actually needs. A paid editor is optional, not a prerequisite.

Make the intro feel like part of your channel

Use a consistent set of colors, typography, and a channel name or logo that matches your existing identity. Keep the design legible and avoid adding elements that compete with the subject. YouTube’s channel branding controls cover profile images, banners, and video watermarks; their dimensions are for those channel assets, not for intro videos.

  • YouTube lists a recommended banner size of 2560 Ă— 1440 pixels.
  • At the minimum upload dimensions, the banner safe area is 1235 Ă— 338 pixels.
  • The minimum video watermark size is 150 Ă— 150 pixels.

Check YouTube’s channel branding specifications when preparing those separate assets.

Edit for pacing, then review the result

Remove dead time, make on-screen wording easy to read, and ensure the opening’s tone matches the subject and pace of the main video. YouTube recommends paying attention to pacing and using audience-retention patterns to find moments viewers skip or leave. Retention data can inform revisions, but it does not prove that an intro caused a change, and no specific intro length or performance lift is established by the cited guidance.

Upload and publish with care

  1. Upload the finished video through YouTube Studio.
  2. Complete the title, description, audience, and visibility details as appropriate for the video.
  3. Preview the video in the upload flow and review the available copyright checks before publishing. These checks are part of the upload process, not a substitute for ensuring you have the rights to the material you use. See YouTube’s video upload guidance.
  4. Use cards or end screens only if they serve the video; they are separate optional elements and do not replace a well-paced opening.

If you add music or sound effects, check that you have the necessary rights and that the license covers your intended use. The guidance linked here does not establish licensing terms for particular tracks.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your documentary channel also uses uploaded videos for a continuous YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping that stream running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not create an intro or stream a camera feed.
