Change your laptop’s system sleep setting so the computer stays awake for the entire StreamYard broadcast. You can usually let the display turn off separately; the important distinction is that the computer itself must not enter sleep. Then verify the change with a short test stream before relying on it for an event.
Keep the laptop awake during the broadcast
In your laptop’s power or battery settings, extend or disable the system sleep timeout for the power condition you will use—plugged in or on battery. Choose a timeout that lasts beyond the planned broadcast, or set sleep to never for that condition if appropriate.
Windows and macOS settings and labels can vary by version and device. The reviewed StreamYard and YouTube guidance does not establish current, exact menu paths for either operating system, so use your system’s own settings search or help to find the sleep control rather than relying on a potentially outdated path.
Sleep is different from the screen turning off
If your laptop offers separate controls, it is fine to allow the display to turn off while keeping the computer awake. Set the sleep control—not just the screen timeout—to keep the computer running during the stream.

Do not assume that closing the lid is safe. Lid behavior depends on the laptop and its settings; keep the lid open unless you have verified that your device remains awake with it closed.
Test the setup before the event
- Connect the laptop to the power source and network you expect to use, then apply the sleep setting for that power condition.
- Start a brief test broadcast through your usual StreamYard-to-YouTube setup. YouTube recommends trying a test live stream before an event; it can be public or unlisted.
- Leave the laptop running long enough to confirm it does not enter sleep. If you set the display to turn off, confirm that the broadcast remains active afterward.
- Check the stream from YouTube and confirm that audio and video continue as expected before ending the test.
StreamYard describes its service as a browser-based live video production and recording tool, and its setup guidance calls for a computer, connected camera and microphone, and stable internet. Keep the laptop and active streaming setup available for the broadcast; the reviewed guidance does not promise that a stream will continue if the computer sleeps, the browser closes, the network fails, or power is lost.

If the stream still lags or disconnects
A laptop that stays awake can still have streaming trouble from other causes. StreamYard identifies poor or unstable internet as a common cause of blurry or laggy streams and recommends hardwiring to the router. Ethernet can improve network stability, but it does not prevent the laptop from sleeping.
- Sleep setting: Recheck the timeout for the power condition in use. A setting for plugged-in operation may not apply when the laptop is on battery, or vice versa.
- Network: Check that the connection is stable. If possible, try Ethernet, another network, or restarting network equipment.
- Browser or device: Check StreamYard’s current browser and device guidance, and try its troubleshooting steps if the issue persists. Browser choice is a separate consideration from sleep settings.
- Power or lid behavior: Keep the laptop connected to power if that suits your setup, but do not treat plugging it in as a sleep fix. Confirm lid behavior rather than assuming it.
StreamYard’s device guidance recommends Chrome and lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera as supported browsers; its onboarding guidance recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop. Browser support can change, so consult StreamYard’s current setup pages if you need to verify compatibility.
