A reliable setup needs separate safeguards for separate failures: let FFmpeg retry eligible connection errors, use a service manager to restart FFmpeg if it exits, and add a progress monitor if it can remain alive while the stream is stalled. A Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog can reboot a system that stops servicing the watchdog, but it does not know whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. If a missed stream-progress deadline should reboot the whole Pi, a monitor must detect that condition and explicitly request the reboot.
First decide what “hang” means
“The stream is down” can describe several different states. The signal you monitor determines whether the right response is a retry, an FFmpeg restart, or a whole-device reboot.
| Failure state | Useful signal | Proportionate response |
|---|---|---|
| A connection or input error occurs and FFmpeg reports it | The applicable protocol error or disconnect | Use FFmpeg’s relevant reconnect options, with bounded retries where appropriate. |
| The FFmpeg process exits | The process has stopped | Run it under a service manager configured to restart it. |
| FFmpeg remains alive but meaningful progress stops | For example, no expected frame or output-time progress before a defined deadline | Have a separate monitor restart the service, or reboot the Pi if that is the chosen policy. |
| FFmpeg appears to send data, but YouTube’s live stream is unhealthy | A YouTube-side stream-health check, if available in the operator’s setup | Do not assume a local process or operating-system watchdog can detect this; define a suitable stream-health signal. |
A quiet log alone is not proof of a hang: it may simply be quiet unless FFmpeg is configured to emit regular progress information. Likewise, seeing a process in the process list does not prove that frames are advancing or that YouTube is displaying a healthy live stream.
Build recovery in layers
1. Allow applicable connection retries
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for specified disconnect, EOF, network-error and selected HTTP-error cases, along with retry-count and delay controls. These options are protocol-specific. Check the input and output protocols and your installed FFmpeg version and build before adding flags; an option accepted for one protocol may not apply to another. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for the supported options and their scope.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reconnect behavior can help with recoverable connection failures, but it is not a general detector for an output that has stopped progressing. Nor does it establish that YouTube is receiving or presenting a healthy stream.
2. Run FFmpeg as a managed service
Put your actual FFmpeg command in a service manager such as systemd so it starts with the Pi and can be restarted if its process exits. A Restart=always policy appears in a Raspberry Pi forum user’s example of a YouTube stream service, but that is an anecdotal illustration, not a universal unit-file recipe or proof that a still-running, stuck FFmpeg process will be detected. A restart-on-exit policy acts when the process exits; it does not itself check frame or output-time progress. See the Raspberry Pi Forums example.

The service unit, command, user permissions, restart policy and service ordering depend on your Pi, OS release and streaming setup. Protect your YouTube stream key as a credential: do not publish it in scripts, logs or a publicly accessible unit file.
3. Monitor progress while the process is alive
If your failure mode is “FFmpeg is still running, but the stream has stopped,” configure a progress signal that the monitor can evaluate. Choose a deadline based on the expected frame or output-time cadence and allow for normal network jitter. The exact signal and threshold are deployment-specific: the available evidence does not establish a one-size-fits-all monitor for every camera, command, Pi or YouTube stream.

When progress misses the deadline, the least disruptive action is usually to restart the FFmpeg service. If your requirement is specifically to reboot the entire device, make the monitor request a privileged reboot action, such as sudo reboot, or its equivalent on your system. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation lists sudo reboot as a command-line reboot action. Automation permissions and safe service handling must be configured for the specific OS; do not assume the monitor can run a privileged command without setup.
Set a cooldown or failure limit so a persistent camera, network or configuration fault does not trigger an endless reboot loop. This is prudent policy, not a universally validated interval or setting. Test with a controlled interruption, then check both the service logs and the actual YouTube-side result before relying on unattended recovery.

4. Keep the hardware watchdog for operating-system hangs
The Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog is a separate, system-level recovery layer. Raspberry Pi’s rolling boot configuration documentation says a nonzero kernel_watchdog_timeout enables a hardware watchdog timer passed to the operating system at boot. If the OS does not service it, the device resets after the timeout; ongoing servicing is typically controlled by systemd’s RuntimeWatchdogSec.
The documentation specifically says Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm does not enable RuntimeWatchdogSec by default and that it must be configured in /etc/systemd/system.conf before the firmware kernel watchdog can be used. Do not generalize this Bookworm detail to every Raspberry Pi OS release. The watchdog setting and firmware/kernel handover must match the Pi model and OS. This mechanism is for OS hangs or crashes after boot, not for checking whether FFmpeg has delivered frames to YouTube.

The same documentation describes a bootloader watchdog separately: it can reset a device if the OS does not start within its timeout, and is cancelled once the Arm CPU starts. It is not runtime stream monitoring. Support for the relevant bootloader setting is model-dependent; the documentation discusses handover on Raspberry Pi 4 and 5.

| Recovery option | What it detects | Effect | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reconnect | Documented connection, EOF, network or selected HTTP errors, depending on protocol and options | Attempts to keep the process and system running | Protocol- and build-dependent; not a general output-progress detector. |
| Service restart | Process exit; a separate monitor can request one after a progress timeout | Restarts streaming software | A restart policy alone does not catch a still-running, stalled process. |
| Pi hardware watchdog | The OS stops servicing the watchdog | Resets the whole device | Requires correct model and OS configuration; does not monitor stream health. |
| Monitor-triggered reboot | Whatever condition the monitor actually checks | Resets software and device state | Requires a reliable signal, configured permissions and a cooldown; implementation is deployment-specific. |
Check the whole path before relying on unattended recovery
- Confirm whether the failure is a connection error, an exited process, stalled local progress or a YouTube-side problem.
- Verify that reconnect flags apply to the relevant protocol and installed FFmpeg build.
- Make sure the service starts at boot and that its restart policy covers the failure it is meant to handle.
- Confirm that the progress monitor sees regular, meaningful progress and tolerates ordinary jitter.
- Check whether the chosen action is a service restart or a full reboot, and configure permissions accordingly.
- Test controlled interruptions and verify recovery in both the Pi’s service logs and YouTube. A local process restarting is not, by itself, proof that the live stream recovered.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream without maintaining a Raspberry Pi, StreamNeo runs that workflow in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans, or start your free first day.
