How to Keep the Same YouTube Live URL When Restarting a 4K 60fps Loop

A reusable stream key is not a reusable watch-page URL. Keep the same viewer link by reconnecting to the original scheduled event while it remains active, and test encoder and network recovery before relying on it.

Schedule one YouTube Live event, share that event’s watch-page URL, and reconnect your encoder to that same event after a restart. A reusable stream key helps keep the encoder configuration consistent, but it is not the viewer URL and does not, by itself, preserve a watch page. The link remains usable only while the original event remains active; YouTube does not promise that every outage, event ending, or newly created stream will retain the same viewer page.

Understand which URL and key you need to keep

A YouTube broadcast involves three related but different things:

  • Scheduled event and watch page: the event viewers open. Schedule the event first and share this URL.
  • Stream URL or server address: the ingest destination your encoder sends video to. Confirm the protocol and server address shown in Live Control Room.
  • Stream key: an encoder credential that identifies where to send the feed. YouTube describes keys as password-like; treat yours as secret. A custom reusable key can save you from changing encoder credentials between sessions, but it is not the watch-page link. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains stream keys and reused settings.

For the same shareable event link, the important action is reconnecting to the original scheduled event—not creating a new event and assuming it inherits the previous URL.

Set up the event and encoder for a restart

  1. Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live, then use the Manage area to schedule or create the event. Share its event URL with viewers. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes scheduled streams and sharing the scheduled URL.
  2. Choose or create a reusable key: In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, select a custom stream key if you want the same encoder credential to be available for future use. Keep the key private. Verify the protocol and server URL in Live Control Room rather than relying on an old encoder profile.
  3. Configure the encoder: Enter the event’s ingest server URL and stream key. Set the encoder to send the intended 4K/60 feed. Start the encoder and verify that the event preview and stream status appear in Live Control Room before treating the stream as live.
  4. For a process restart, reconnect to the same event: Restart the encoder and send content again using that event’s stream settings. Check Live Control Room for the event’s actual state and preview. YouTube says the watch page is created when the encoder starts sending the stream, so do not assume viewers saw an uninterrupted broadcast during the restart.
  5. Review auto-start and auto-stop: Check these options on the event and decide whether their behavior suits your restart plan. YouTube says Reuse settings also copies auto-start/auto-stop selections, so verify the event state rather than assuming a copied setting behaves as desired.

Do not confuse “Reuse settings” with reusing the event

YouTube’s Reuse settings option copies metadata, settings, and the stream key into a new stream. The help guidance does not say that the new stream keeps the old event’s watch page. Use it to copy configuration when creating another event, not as a way to preserve the original viewer URL.

Know when the original event may no longer be available

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped. Plan for the event’s completion and archive behavior rather than treating a scheduled event as an indefinite session. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not state a precise reconnect grace period or guarantee the exact conditions in which an event ends after an interruption. If the event has ended, do not promise viewers that reconnecting will restore its original page.

Configure 4K at 60fps

YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these 2160p60 bitrate figures: 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 35 Mbps recommended for H.264. These are YouTube’s published settings, not independent performance measurements; check the live table before configuring because platform guidance can change.

Codec at 2160p60 YouTube-listed bitrate
AV1 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.265 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.264 35 Mbps recommended

YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, frame rates up to 60fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum). Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the full and latest requirements.

Allow upload headroom

Your sustained upload capacity must exceed the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond that total and notes that other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce available upload capacity. Its streaming tips recommend testing the actual setup and monitoring stream health. Use the bitrate for the selected codec, include any additional audio or output demands in your capacity planning, and test with the intended video motion and audio levels.

Ordinary SDR 4K/60 does not require HDR. HDR has a separate setup path and additional format requirements; use YouTube’s dedicated HDR guidance only if you intend to send an HDR signal.

Test recovery before sharing the link widely

Run these tests with the scheduled event and monitor Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and checking that the player rolls to the backup; a network disruption can also interrupt a stream.

  • Encoder restart: stop and restart the encoder process, then confirm it reconnects to the original event and that the event remains active.
  • Network interruption: briefly interrupt the encoder’s connection, restore it, and check the event’s state and viewer playback. Do not assume a particular reconnect timeout.
  • Backup takeover: if you have a primary and backup encoder, test the handoff—for example, by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet—and verify that the player rolls over while the event remains active.
  • Loop behavior: confirm the encoder or playback system actually resumes the source at the intended point after a process restart. A reusable stream key does not make a video loop by itself.

Troubleshooting a changed or unavailable stream

Symptom Likely issue What to check
The encoder reconnects, but viewers cannot use the expected link The encoder may be sending to a different event, or the original event may have ended. Check the event selected in Live Control Room and whether it is still active. Reconnect to the original event if it remains active; do not assume a new event has the same watch page.
The encoder reports an ingest or authentication error The stream key or server URL may not match the event, or the key may have been changed. Confirm the protocol, server address, and key in Live Control Room; update the encoder profile carefully and keep the key private.
Video drops, buffers, or stream health degrades Upload capacity may be insufficient or shared; the selected bitrate may exceed stable throughput. Check stream health, reduce competing network traffic, and test a bitrate your connection can sustain with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
The video resumes but not at the expected place The source player or encoder may not resume the loop automatically after a restart. Test the loop and restart behavior separately from YouTube ingestion; configure the source playback to begin or continue as intended.
A copied setup opens a different event Reuse settings created a new stream with copied configuration. Share the original scheduled event URL when that is the intended destination, and verify the event shown in Live Control Room.

Choose a restart-capable setup

YouTube supports both software encoders running on computers and standalone hardware encoders. Choose based on sustained 2160p60 encoding ability, codec and protocol support, recovery after a process failure, power and network resilience, and whether the system can replay the source automatically. YouTube recommends evaluating encoder options for the specific need; no particular model is established here as suitable.

A single encoder is simpler, but its computer, power, and network connection are potential failure points. A primary/backup arrangement can improve resilience only if takeover is configured and tested while the same event is active. A restart-safe workflow is therefore as much about verifying event status and failover as it is about selecting a reusable key.
