Neither route guarantees a smooth YouTube broadcast: check the finished media in OBS, leave upload-bandwidth headroom, and test the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose between a combined file and a playlist source
If you want one prepared asset that plays from beginning to end, use FFmpeg to concatenate the clips, then add the output to OBS as a Media Source. If you want OBS to retain playlist controls and play separate files, use its VLC Video Source; VLC must be installed. You do not need FFmpeg just to play a compatible video in OBS.

Inspect the clips before concatenating
Check each file’s video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, durations, frame sizes, frame rates, and audio layouts. The FFmpeg concat demuxer expects the files to expose matching streams, including codecs and time base. If duration information is inaccurate, FFmpeg warns that artifacts can appear at clip boundaries. The FFmpeg documentation distinguishes stream copying from filter-based processing: Streamcopy is not a compatibility fixer.
Use FFprobe, distributed with FFmpeg, to inspect streams and format information. For example:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format "clip-01.mp4"Run it on each clip and compare the relevant fields. If codecs, time bases, stream layouts, or other important properties differ, do not assume a stream-copy concat will produce a reliable result.
Combine compatible clips without re-encoding
When inputs are compatible, create a plain-text list file. The example uses files in the same folder as the list:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy combined.mp4The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first input starts at zero and each subsequent input starts after the preceding duration. With -c copy, FFmpeg copies compressed packets rather than decoding and encoding them, so this avoids generational quality loss. It cannot apply filters, and it will not make mismatched streams compatible.

The -safe 0 option allows paths that FFmpeg might otherwise reject as unsafe. Use it only with a list and media files you control; do not process an untrusted list of paths. For details, see the FFmpeg documentation on the concat demuxer and streamcopy.
Normalize mismatched clips by re-encoding
If the inputs differ in important stream properties, normalize them to a common target format, then concatenate compatible outputs—or use FFmpeg’s concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The filter requires correctly mapped and synchronized streams, so its exact command depends on the number and layout of video and audio streams. There is no universal copy-paste command or single CRF, preset, resolution, or bitrate that is right for every source and machine.
Choose a target resolution and frame rate deliberately. Preserve the source aspect ratio rather than stretching the picture, and remember that upscaling does not restore detail absent from the original. Re-encoding takes time and compute resources. Afterward, check that audio and video remain synchronized and inspect transitions for gaps, jumps, or other boundary artifacts. FFmpeg explains the choice between the concat demuxer and concat filter.

Load the output into OBS
For one combined file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will play the video.
- Choose the combined output file in the source properties.
- Preview playback and check the beginning, clip boundaries, audio, and end behavior before relying on it in a live scene.
For separate playlist files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- Add a VLC Video Source in OBS.
- Configure the playlist files and controls in that source.
- Preview the playlist and verify order, transitions, and audio.
OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide. Its File → Remux Recordings function can convert OBS recordings to MP4, but remuxing is not a substitute for normalizing or concatenating arbitrary playlist clips.
Configure and test the YouTube live stream separately
Preparing a file and configuring a live encoder are different tasks. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the encoder and your available connection. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming live stream for viewer formats.

- Use CBR and set a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder settings allow it; keep the interval at four seconds or less.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the intended live stream and use its stream key in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Start a test stream ahead of the actual event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems.
- Only proceed when the stream is stable and the selected media plays as expected.
YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% headroom: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See its streaming tips. A file that plays smoothly on your computer can still buffer or drop frames during a live broadcast if the upstream connection is weak or overloaded.

Do not confuse live encoder settings with upload encoding guidance. For uploaded videos, YouTube recommends formats and settings that include MP4, H.264, supported audio such as AAC-LC, a 48 kHz sample rate, and retaining the frame rate used for recording. Those upload recommendations are not a universal recipe for an OBS live encoder; see YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Having permission to stream a file is essential: a video that is available online or included in a playlist is not automatically cleared for live rebroadcast. Check rights for both the picture and audio, including music, clips, and other third-party material. YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules can affect whether a stream is allowed or remains available, so review the current YouTube live streaming restrictions and copyright guidance before broadcasting.
Separately, permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization. YouTube assesses channels under its monetization policies, including its rules on reused content; review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and make sure the channel adds sufficient original value.

Troubleshoot common playback and stream problems
- FFmpeg rejects the concat list or reports stream errors: Check the list syntax, filenames, and paths. Confirm the inputs have matching stream properties before using stream copy.
- The output has glitches at clip boundaries: Recheck input duration information and stream compatibility. Normalize mismatched inputs or use a re-encoding workflow, then inspect the transitions again.
- Audio and video drift out of sync: Verify stream mapping and synchronization during re-encoding, and test the output across clip boundaries before loading it into a live scene.
- OBS does not show playlist controls: A regular Media Source is for a selected file. Use VLC Video Source for playlist playback and install VLC.
- The video is smooth locally but buffers on YouTube: Check the available upload bandwidth against the total stream bitrate, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect Live Control Room stream health.
- YouTube preview is blank or the stream will not start: Confirm the correct stream key is configured, the encoder uses a supported protocol and settings, and the live stream is active in YouTube Live Control Room.
